Shure MX393 Overview

This black Shure MX393/C Microflex is a cardioid boundary microphone designed to capture high-quality speech and voice for sound-reinforcement and teleconferencing installations in governmental, institutional, religious, and business settings.

The MX393/C can be permanently installed on conference tables, desks, or lecterns. Its sleek, low-profile design is ideal for conference rooms and other sites where minimal mic visibility is of high priority and aesthetics are important.

The microphone features a cardioid polar pattern best used for a single person or two people sitting side by side. The mic takes advantage of the boundary effect to capture clear speech with reduced room ambience for intelligibility. The interchangeable capsule design provides the installer with greater flexibility and makes it possible to easily reconfigure microphone coverage as the need arises.

The MX393/C is equipped with a programmable, silent membrane switch with a bicolor LED that indicates the status of the mic.

The mic resists interference from devices such as cell phones and two-way communication devices. It requires 11 to 52V phantom power to operate. Included is an easy-to-use paint mask for custom-color installations.

Shure MX393 Reviews

Quietly does its job — picked up the whole room without any fuss

Used this on a corporate internal meeting recording for a client. Set it flat on the conference table, ran the XLR, and let it work. It captured the front row clearly and pulled in the second row without any issues — no one had to lean in, no one had to repeat themselves. That's really the pitch for a boundary mic like this: it disappears. No one's thinking about the microphone, which is exactly what you want in a meeting recording scenario. It just sits there and does its job. For the use case — boardroom recordings, internal meetings, round-table discussions — this is a clean, reliable solution. Shure quality at a price that makes sense. Would buy again.

Great for churches

We added this mic to our system as a means of picking up the congregation for our live stream. Placing it off to the side of the pulpit and aimed directly at the congregation, it provided the ideal solution for making those watching the stream feel like they were actually there. It greatly exceeded our expectations.

For a city council meeting, where the members are facing an audience, I would assume a cardio pick-up pattern is better, as then it wouldn't pick-up as much sound from the audience?
Asked by: Chad
That is correct. The omnidirectional version is good for round-table discussions.

According to SHURE's website, the Microflex Series come with 3 interchangeable cartridges. I don't see that in the IN THE BOX section. Does it in fact come with 3 cartridges?

No, the Shure MX393/S does not come with interchangeable cartridges. The MX393/S comes only with the supercardioid cartridge built into the unit.

Is the cartridge itself interchangeable - even if not included in the box?
Asked by: john w
Yes, MX393/S has an interchangeable capsule. The R183 is the replacement omnidirectional capsule, R184- Supercardioid, and R185 would be the cardioid replacement capsule.

Anyone have any experience with the noise pick-up ...

Anyone have any experience with the noise pick-up from the table? I am concerned about hearing keyboards typing or pencil tapping, etc from council members. Currently we use Shure Gooseneck version, but they are obtrusive (according to the council members) and they always aim them away from their mouths.
Asked by: Chad
I use them in connection with lapel mic's for video conferencing. They work great for picking up everyone in the room. I would suggest setting them on top of something which, elevates them slightly from the table. It is possible that you will pick up the other room noise as well, so if it's live feed you can't edited it out unless you are using a good mixer. If it's recorded you can edit out the background noise.

question

Would this microphone work well for picking up noise on a basketball court for broadcast?
Asked by: Dean J.
It depends on the sound you want recorded. This will pick up all the sound in the room (depending on the size of the room) which could include unwanted sounds from the crowd or other noises.
