VocoPro DIGITAL-PLAY-8 Overview

Featuring eight bodypacks with headsets and lavalier mics, the Digital-Play-8 wireless system from VocoPro combines the convenience of simple set up & easy operation with the signal quality of 24-bit digital technology. It operates free from TV signal interference in the 900 MHz band with a transmission range of up to 200', and is well suited for applications with multiple speakers in schools, houses of worship, conferences, and more.

The system includes two four-channel receivers with discrete balanced XLR outputs for each microphone and a 1/4" mixed output. Individual microphone channels feature a dedicated volume control, an RF LED that lets you know when the mic is on, and an AF LED which flashes when audio is received. Powered with two AA batteries, the bodypack transmitters are equipped with an on/off button, an LED battery indicator, and a gain-control switch.

The Digital-Play-8 comes with two 4-channel XLR snake cables to individually connect each microphone signal to a mixing board, and two 1/4" unbalanced cables to patch in the microphones quickly using the two mixed outputs. To complete the package, a rackmount kit is also included for mounting the units in a road case or in a stationary rack.

This was a GREAT buy! I Used it in a very small space all people wearing the mics were standing very close togethor, and there wasn't a single squeak noise or scratchy sound. Very EASY and SIMPLE setup.

I've used the VocoPro SilentPA-Tour10 system and found it to be very useful. I hoped this 8 channel wireless kit would be of similar quality, but unfortunately I was very disappointed. I read another reviewer who hated the product, but I wanted to give it a chance. The 8-channel kit has two boxes, each with a 4-channel kit inside, so I only opened one, but when I turned on the transmitter the first thing I heard was an awful amount of self-noise from the unit. It was just a terrible loud hiss sound, like back in the days when you'd put a cassette tape in the player and press play... that kind of hiss. I tried switching to another lavalier mic, then switching from the lavalier mic to the headset mic, and then using a different transmitter, but no matter what the sound was the same. Of course, for the price I wasn't expecting the kit to sound like a Sennheiser, but the amount of noise coming from the unit renders it simply unusable for me. I own a budget level wireless lavalier kit so I did a side-by-side recording with that and the VocoPro kit just to see the difference, and it was pretty clear that with the gain properly set on my recorder the noise floor of the VocoPro system was at about 38 to 40 dB, while my other wireless system was less than 60 dB. I also drove to another location about 10 miles away and repeated the test with the same results. It's really too bad, because other than that, I did like the kit. The plastic transmitters feel very cheap, but that's to be expected at this price point. The receivers, however, are a decent build quality, and I really like the approx 1 meter cable snake that comes with this unit. And I like having the ability to switch from lav's to headsets depending on the situation. The capsules on the lavalier mics are rather large, but for my intended purpose (talking head, panel discussions, etc) this wouldn't be an issue. I would have really enjoyed this kit if it hadn't been for the excessive noise. Very hard to find any kind of multi-channel wireless kit like this one, even at twice the price.

The mic input on the VocoPro bodypack transmitters is a TA3 3-pin mini-XLR connector while the receivers have standard 3-pin XLR and 1/4" connectors. Each receiver module in the VocoPro Digital-Play-8 accommodates four transmitters and offers individual XLR output signals for each mic as well as a single 1/4" output for a combined output signal with a mix of all four mics.

If I buy two eight channel systems, can I use them both simultaneously?

Yes and no. Two of the same exact systems that operate on the same fixed (preset) frequencies will not work together because you would have mics from each system each trying to transmit audio on the same frequency, like two radio stations trying to broadcast on the same frequency and you don't hear either station clearly. Each mic needs to operate on a different frequency in order to use multiple wireless mics that can be used simultaneously. The best option for you would be to purchase the 16-channel system which is essentially two of the 8-channel systems that have different fixed frequencies for each mic.
