Vello ES-68 Overview

The dedicated Vello ES-68 Lens Hood is specifically designed for use with Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens. It is primarily used to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of it. A dedicated hood is crafted to perfectly suit the specific focal length of the lens it is designed for. Additionally, this hood features a non-glare matte finish on the interior surface to further prevent or limit lens flare. Also, since the end of the lens is extended, you get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The bayonet mount is designed to also work in the reversed position, allowing the hood to be placed backwards over the lens for a more compact storage solution.

I bought this for my Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM and it fits firmly. Feels well built and the release button works well too.

It is a lens hood

It looks and works as an OEM lens hood on Canon 50 mm, F1.8, STM lens, but is cheaper. The material feels good and solid. It can be reversed mounting on the lens for space-saving. However, it was so tight when the hood was reversely mounted that I found it was difficult to remove it. It could be an issue of either this copy or the design of locking mechanism on the hood. It's tolerable but definitely not as good as an OEM product from Canon or Nikon.

Is this hood supposed to have small openings on ...

Is this hood supposed to have small openings on the left and right sides that you can see through? I don't know if this would affect picture quality, but the Vello hood I got for my 75-300mm did not have these side openings.

No, the hood does not have openings. It is made for the Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens. That lens does not need a hood that has openings.
