LaCie STFA4000400 overview

  • 1Description

Utilizing hardware RAID and Thunderbolt technology, the Lacie 4TB (2 x 2TB) Rugged RAID is well suited for videographers, photographers, and heavy data users. The Rugged RAID comes packed with two 2TB hard drives that can be hardware configured into RAID 1 or 0. The drives spin at 5400 rpm. Preconfigured in RAID 0, the drives offer performance with read and write speeds up to 240 MB/s to provide quick access to your data. For redundancy, you can set the drives in RAID 1 to create an exact copy of data onto both drives, which offer a total capacity of 2TB, for preserving data in the event if one drive fails.

The Rugged RAID is outfitted with an integrated Thunderbolt cable that transfers data at a rate of 10 Gb/s to your Mac or PC system. Additionally when connected via Thunderbolt, the Rugged RAID draws power from this connection without the need for carrying a bulky external power supply. For compatibility, it also comes with USB 3.0 interface that supports USB 2.0 and UAS. To live up to its name, the Rugged is built to withstand drops from 5' when in non-operating mode and an IP 54 rating makes it dust and water resistant. Furthermore, it protects your data on the drives with AES 256-bit software encryption.

Versatility Anywhere, on Any Computer
Tailor the LaCie Rugged to your precise needs. Leave it in RAID 0 (striped mode) to maximize speed and capacity. Or choose RAID 1 (mirrored mode), where your data is duplicated across the two drives. So even if a drive fails in the field, your files remain completely accessible. Using LaCie Setup Assistant, it's easy to make the LaCie Rugged compatible with any Mac computer, PC, or both. And with Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 interfaces and hardware RAID, any computer will recognize the LaCie Rugged. It lets you transport a massive amount of data with complete security, and access it freely from any computer.

Designed for Mobility

Rugged Design
The LaCie Rugged is tested to withstand drops of up to 5' (1.5m) and 1 ton of pressure. So whether the LaCie Rugged takes a jarring jeep ride or is crushed by stacks of suitcases in the airplane cargo hold, your data remains safe.
Protective Cap
With its cap in place, the LaCie Rugged is IP 54-rated for resistance to dust and water splashing - even during operation. So even during a dust storm or tropical downpour, you stay confident that your data remains accessible.
4TB Capacity
Under a RAID 0 array, the Rugged RAID combines the capacity from both drives into a single volume of 4TB
Integrated Thunderbolt Cable
Ensure you never lose your cable, stow it neatly when not in use, while saving space in your luggage.
No Power Cable Needed
Powered through the Thunderbolt cable, the LaCie Rugged lets you access your data anywhere - no power outlet required.
Hardware RAID
The LaCie Rugged's RAID system is operating system independent, so any computer recognizes it as long as the file system format you choose is compatible with the host computer.
Software Suite
The LaCie Rugged includes everything professionals need for secure backup in the field: a backup software suite and compatibility with Time Machine and Windows Backup. It also includes LaCie Private-Public software, which lets you password-protect the entire drive or only certain volumes with AES 256-bit encryption.
  • LaCie Setup Assistant - format and create partitions for use on Mac, PC, or both
  • LaCie Private-Public - password protection with AES 256-bit software encryption
  • LaCie Backup Assistant - backup software designed for PC/Mac
  • LaCie Desktop Manager - monitor the hard drive's health and configure email alerts

    LaCie STFA4000400 reviews

    4TB (2 x 2TB) Rugged RAID is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Workhorse and reliable I usually don't write to many reviews but thought I'd offset the one terrible review here. I have used this drive for 8-10 hours/day of editing for about 6 months now and it has been fantastic. Good speed, RAID'd for peace of mind and has never has a single hiccup - not once. I have created over 200 finished videos - which equals countless exports - and, again, never a hiccup. It travels well, seems well built, and the attached thunder bolt cord is great. At first, I thought that may be a detractor because what if it gets nicked or ruined, i'm basically out a drive. But it hasn't and seems well protected when tucked away in the cords ravine that goes around the body of the hard drive. Overall, I have had countless, I MEAN COUNTLESS, external drives and most of been okay, some duds and a few great. I would list this as one of my favorites so far. Like my headline says, it's been a workhorse and it's been reliable - can't ask for more. Just to mention it, I am a professional video editor/production guy working with 4K footage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as Advertised I used this little guy to store my iTunes media library. I've had it for about a year, and so far haven't had a single problem with it. Using Blackmagic speed test, it clocks in at around 150MB/sec write, and 200MB/sec read, when setup as a RAID 0 device. Plenty fast enough to simply hold and play music and iTunes movies. Having the built-in thunderbolt cable adds to the convenience of an already very portable drive. The orange (why orange?) bumpers help protect the device when I take it on trips. Highly recommended for anyone who needs a portable storage device.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It's ORANGE!!! I love this drive, and it is ORANGE!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small but powerful Excellent and very reliable hard drive, it is one of the fastest because of RAID0. But very careful with the ExFat formatting, I lost a lot of data due to file corruption when I used this formatting, especially when it is almost full, this simply stops being recognized by mac or windows. I suggest to always use NTFS or Mac OS Extended.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from garbage!!!! Do not trust this drive! The warning sign.... First it started coming up as unreadable on my computer about 6-8 months in. After a couple times re-plugging it in it would read fine so I figured it was the port on my computer, not the hard drive. Finally it would pop up to give me one and only one option to reformat it. This of course was not an option as I had nothing backed up on another device because its dual drive mirroring option was intended to do that! So basically I could no longer retrieve anything off of it starting a month after its 1 year warranty was up. I had it looked at and 80% of the files were corrupted and incomplete. My guess is there was a problem with it mirroring at some point and tried to reformat itself to the factory default. So maybe, just maybe it wouldn't have a problem if I had left it in its default format. Very expensive and stressful lesson on not trusting LaCie.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comes 'unplugged' easily Seems fine overall but the slightest wiggle of my laptop 'disconnects' it and it ejects. Not physical disconnection, digital connection to the computer. The firewire seems very touchy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worse hard drive ever As a photographer with 10 years of experience in photography and hard drives, this is by far the worse data storage I have among 15 plus hard drives. Do not trust this company with your precious data. They are a bad company that buys cheap batches of hardware to make their flunky hard drives. With a bill of $1300 for data recovery this the most expensive piece of equipment you can buy.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not the best for 4k Editing With fewer options for non SSD drives I was assured that this was a fast enough drive to handle 4k video. Well it sort of does the job, but very poorly. It's the first drive I've owned that makes FCP X hang for a while until it is able to locate the proper resources. I am not running the RAID configuration.
