Meade Instruments' ETX125 Observer 127mm f/15 Maksutov-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope is engineered with a convex meniscus lens which not only eliminates the need for periodic collimation, but the nature of the lens requires a smaller secondary mirror which limits obstruction and increases contrast. The Maksutov optical path results in a slower focal ratio and narrower field of view versus a similar Schmidt design, but the optical benefits make this an ideal scope for planetary and double-star observation. For those who want to use it for astrophotography, an internal mirror flips down to direct the optical path straight back for prime-focus photography using a DSLR camera body and optional adapters. An equatorial tilt plate is included which allows for proper polar alignment and single-axis tracking, for smoother and more precise tracking as required by long-exposure photography.
The brains of this system is Meade's revolutionary AudioStar hand controller. Equipped with a 2-line LED display and 20-key red backlit keypad, it controls the motorized mount for precise GoTo capabilities. Its internal 30,000+ object database is updateable via the Internet, and has the capability to take you on hands-free guided tours of the night sky. What sets this iteration apart from its earlier counterparts is an integrated speaker that allows you to listen to over 4-hours of educational audio content while actively observing the sky without having to remove your eye from the scope.
Meade includes two eyepieces that produce 76x and 196x magnifications for well-rounded observational options, plus a red-dot finder which with its exceptional field of view makes finding objects faster and easier. Completing the package is a sturdy stainless steel tripod that provides a solid platform for the scope and mount.
