GoPro HERO5 Session Overview

  • 1Description

Though small in stature, the GoPro HERO5 Session action camera more than makes up for it in functionality and features. Retaining the familiar ice cube-sized form factor of the previous-generation HERO Session, the HERO5 Session ups the ante with UHD 4K video at up to 30 fps, 1080p video up to 90 fps, and 10MP photos at bursts up to 30 fps. The camera body itself is waterproof to depths of 33' and is shock-resistant, so even without a protective housing the HERO5 Session can take a licking.

Whether you want to clamp the HERO5 Session to a guitar headstock, boom it out on a selfie stick, or mount it to your surfboard, you will have all of GoPro's separately available three-pronged accessories to help get your shot. The included Standard Frame has an integrated accessory mount for securing accessories. A mounting buckle quick release for the Standard Frame, and two adhesive mounts (one curved and one straight) with quick releases, are included to get you started.

While more functionality has been integrated, the HERO5 Session is still easy to use. The one-button interface featured on the previous generation HERO Session is instantly familiar for accessing menu functions. If the camera is off, pressing the record button will power it on and immediately start recording. Hands-free control is also possible using the built-in Voice Control feature or the free mobile app. Speaking simple voice commands can control various functions inside the camera, including start/stop video recording, photo burst, and more.

Quick Features
  • Photos: Up to 10MP, 30 fps burst, time-lapse mode

Video Recording Modes
Select the desired resolution to fit your project. Record in UHD 4K resolution up to 30 fps, or switch to lower resolutions such as 1080p and 720p for access to higher frame rates, more FOV (Field of View) options, and electronic stabilization. In 2.7K widescreen and lower resolutions, for instance, narrower FOV options open up including Medium, Narrow, and Linear mode (only available in 2.7K and 1080p settings), which corrects the lens's barrel distortion.

All video recording modes can be as simple or advanced as you want them to be. If you only want to ensure that a shot is captured, auto-exposure is at your disposal. For those who are shooting less off-the-cuff footage and want complete control, manual control of exposure is also available.

The HERO5 Session will always try to record the best audio quality possible. Using internal algorithms, the HERO5 Session can reduce artifacts from wind noise, making audio quality more acceptable, even in extreme circumstances.

Photo Modes
Burst mode: Bursts of photos can be taken during high-action sequences to ensure that you capture the moment. The camera's buffer can fit up to 30 photos from a single burst, and burst durations can be set from six seconds to one second, effectively offering a 30 fps burst of 10MP photos.

Time-Lapse mode: Record clouds floating by, traffic snaking through cityscapes, or stars and constellations tracing their way across the sky with the time-lapse mode. Set your interval from a picture every 1/2 second to every minute for different effects.

    GoPro HERO5 Session Reviews

HERO5 Session is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Good Picture Quality, Stopped working within 2 Weeks I use this mainly while biking and appreciate the form factor. The video quality is great (5 stars), particularly compared to the first Hero Session model. Pictures taken while moving tend to be 90% too blurry to use. Video or pictures in dusk lighting is poor. However my device started malfunctioning within 2 weeks. First it started recording at will. Then, after following GoPro's instructions to update the firmware, it stopped working altogether. It's getting returned, and I now don't have enough faith to be willing to replace it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Camera! Worth the Investment! So I purchased the Hero5 Black Edition first and that is an outstanding camera. I purchased this camera as a secondary camera. Pros, small compact, great picture quality and audio. Cons: Internal battery so when it is dead, you will have to charge it. On the plus side, it lasts longer than the Black Edition. It is also a little less intuitive with the menu system but the app will help you with this issue. If you are only buying one camera and it does not have to be super small, spend the extra $ for the Black Edition. If you need something really small and great quality or if you are getting this as a secondary camera as I did, it is a very good buy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor software ruins a otherwise good product At first the buggy and often hard to connect software was not enough for me to give up on this camera. When the company decided to start forcing an internet connection and login so they could track my camera usage I asked for a refund, which they refused. This will be my last GoPro camera purchase.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from They are apparently very easy to steal Sad to say that I had mine for about one day. I was using it for additional footage at a wedding and somebody walked off with it. All of my big Canon stuff is apparently harder to pilfer so maybe I'll just stick with that in the future. So much for trying to lighten my load! One thing I can tell you is that the battery does not last very long, and since it is not interchangeable, maybe this camera is not really cut out for what I was trying to use it for. I can't speak of the image quality since I don't even have that to look at. Keep it stuck on your helmet or something and you'll surely have better luck with it than I did.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product The session works good, battery life is OK, the unit I received initially worked with the app then after a couple of uses stopped. The camera required an update to connect and worked again the problem was it wouldn't connect to the app to get the update. After about 30 minutes of trying to connect it connected and was able to update, what a pain! The app is ok at best.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from SUPER COMPACT, BUT CONFIRM WHEN ITS RECORDING The tiny form factor is amazing. I mount it to my MTB helmet, below the visor, so its super compact. Navigating the menues on the camera itself, takes a bit of practice. But theres really no need to, since its actually very easy to adjust all of the parameters from the phone app. The only thing I recommend, is that if your using the camera on helmet, and you want to start recording, you should ask your buddy to take a look at you, and  verify the red light is blinking. I watched a youtube a few times with tips how best to setup the camera, and was pretty happy the first time I tried it on the trail.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from not an IT person Im a college grad, but old.  So even after reading the downloaded manual, I couldnt get the camera to function.  I called the chat line, but they were stumped, too.  However, they suggested I watch a youtube video, and that did the trick!  My problem turned out to be impatience.  After pressing the MENU button, it takes about 5 seconds for the screen to turn on, and I wasnt waiting long enough, so I was pressing the MENU button too many times and confusing the camera and myself!  Because an operational manual does not come with the camera, I suggest you watch a youtube video, to get started.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 4k Overhyped UHD resolution gives it useable HD if you use the whole image scaled to HD. The bitrate is low and the lens is cheap so scaling up shots is a foggy looking mess. Might be better with the plexi removed with a mini stardriver. UHD has one perspective only and no stabilization. Stabilize UHD in post is better than in-camera stabilization at lower resolution because of artifacting and baked in noise. Anything higher than 200iso is worse than a cellphone camera. Best quality is to always use the UHD and custom format vs other resolutions and zoom modes. WiFi control only works where you have cell service. Its intermittent even then. I'm a pro videographer so giving a real review is important. Its a $200 camera that is small. The rest is marketing hype. I kept mine
