Do any users have issues with how the control buttons work with the cover in place? I'm mostly a bird photographer and have programmed my Fn1, AF-ON, the joystick buttons for specific uses. I need them to be really responsive to immediate touch. Does the cover make one have to push these buttons harder? Thanks in advance.
Relax. You will have no issues. I have taken thousands of bird photos with my cover in place.

question
I want more protection on the screen. There seems to be no screen protectors in the photos of this product. Should I buy an additional Vello LCD protector?Link is here https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/883535-REG/vello_gspu_nd800_screen_protector_ultra_for.html
The Nikon LP-SD4 Protective Film for LCD Displays works great on my D500 as well as on my D5. For that matter any screen protector for a D4 and D4s will work. The LP-SD4 contains two sets and is available from B&H which is where I got mine. Love it!

question
Are they going to make a cover to use with the mbd 17 base? They did for the d810 and it has saved my d 810 many times , it is a must have.
I don't know. I have your configuration with the D810 and I love it. Unfortunately, that cover is the only good product for a camera with a grip (I could cut the cover for the Nikon D7100/D7200 and D800 with their grip with mediocre to just acceptable results). Don't even try with the cover for the D500 - the lower part of the back is far too thin. This company has yet to realize that most people that buy a pro or semi-pro camera tend to use a grip, genuine or not.

question
Why no cover on top? ... There is no pop-up flash on the D500
There is a flap of protective covering that lays over the area that is highest point on top of the camera where your flash connects when its not in use. The rest of the top of the camera is lower and not an impact area. It also has controls that I use frequently and a covering would get in the way.
