Profoto D2 overview

  • 1Description

Having wowed us with the introduction of the battery-powered TTL B1 and B2 flash heads, Profoto does it again with the AC-powered D2 500Ws AirTTL Monolight. Building on the foundation of the popular D1, this light maxes-out the D1 performance specs while adding wireless TTL from the B1 and B2. With the D2, "speed" is the operative word.

The D2 500 recycles to full power in 0.6 seconds, almost half the time as the D1 500, and in Freeze Mode, achieves flash durations as short as 1/63,000 of a second, outperforming most studio pack systems. That's good news for special effects photographers and sports shooters. It can also shoot bursts of 20 flashes per second, so you're sure to capture peak action or several versions of it. In addition, the D2 also supports High Speed Sync up to 1/8000 of a second for photographers who want to stop action or use wide apertures with full ambient light control. The 10-stop power range gives ample choices to achieve your objective.

Besides super-fast operation, the D2 shortens your shooting time with on-board TTL compatibility. Pros who formerly turned their noses up at the term "point-and-shoot" as amateurish will learn to love this technology. Simply set your lights up, set the camera to TTL and shoot. The first shot is nearly always a keeper. The key to this control is the optional Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Operating on 2.4 GHz bandwidth, the wireless transmitter, really a controller, has 8 frequency channels and with 6 groups and a range of up to 330' for TTL triggering and 1000' for normal triggering. Each channel has power ratio capability of +/- 2 stops. If you prefer to use manual, you have 10 stops of power variation.

The D2 also features an enhanced, intuitive LCD screen display. Modeling Light, Ready Indicator, Mode, Sync, Channel, and Group are easily selected through the Settings button. The display even flips around the way your iPhone does in case you're working with the head upside down or hanging it overhead. The D2 has a self-seeking multi-voltage (100-240) power supply for worldwide use, too. Profoto has covered so many features on the photographers wish list that you'll wonder what they can come up with next.

Catch the Moment
The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That's fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump, and you'll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.
Freeze the Moment
The D2 can provide super quick flash durations up to 1/63,000 of a second. Shoot a splash of water, and it will be frozen in midair.
Shoot with Ease Using TTL
Point-and-shoot in TTL mode using the separately purchased Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Switch to Manual mode and control the light with intuitive buttons and menus.
Overpower Any Light
The D2 packs enough punch to overpower the available light in almost any situation. Its power is also an advantage when shooting at longer distances or when using larger light shaping tools.
Control Your Surroundings
Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) enables you to shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000 of a second. Use HSS to shoot with a wide aperture in bright conditions or to freeze action with absolute sharpness.

    Profoto D2 reviews

    D2 500Ws AirTTL Monolight is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I would buy this product again without question I already own two Profoto 500 w B1s and was looking for a third, so the D2 for studio work seemed like the perfect complement to the kit. I also wanted the quick recycle time and speed. I have only had this unit a few weeks, so I've only used it on a couple occasions so far, but on a recent studio shoot it performed like a champ. I have a canon 1Dx and it had no problem keeping up with the 1Dx firing at 10 frames per second. What impressed me most was that the exposures were spot on and consistent from frame to frame, with little or no variation of power or color quality. I'd say if you're going to be working in the studio and need quick recycle and speed, you won't go wrong with this monolight.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from D2 Air 500 watts This is an awesome peice of equipment. I added it to two D1's (same 500 watts) and the back panel is easier to use and read, and the power range is wider; with the D1 I was able to stop down to f4 and now with the D2 I can stop down to at least f2.8. Just beware if you are using the D1 with the air remote you will need to upgrade to the new remote to use the TTL and High spped sync features. More $$$! This is a drag, but otherwise great job from profoto.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Extremely Fast Light A very fast and powerful light. I tried using it in Low Power mode so that I could power it out on location with the external battery, although it worked the HSS feature suffered when in Low Power mode. Love the brightness of the mono light.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too powerful for a MiniVagabond Just like many before me, I was on the fence about investing in the Profoto light system as a result of their cost and the price for the modifiers. I had the opportunity to put the Flashpoint Xplor600w up against the D2, and the Flashpoint held it's own up against the Profoto. I tested both strobes individually at full power with a Sekonic light meter at a distance of 15 feet away. The Flashpoint registered 10.0 f/stops, with the reflector and diffuser attached. Then I took the Flashpoint off of the light stand and replaced it with the D2 and the meter reading registered 8.0 f/stops. Was really impress with the quality of light and the fast recycle times of the D2, it was giving the ready beep before I could click the stopwatch. My only gripe so far has been that the D2's will not run on the PCB MiniVagabond. It may require the xtremeversion but PCB has not confirmed. As for me, the 500W profotodemonstrateda fast powerful light. But then for a fraction of the cost, that Flashpoint did practically the same thing. I like shooting with a 2nd light to act as a seperator, it will cost me another $400 for some sync devices or another $2 grand to get another profotostrobe. I think the Proto strobe is cute, but I think the look of cash in my account is a little more attractive. Still on that fence....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing This is my third Profoto strobe purchase. I am using this as the third light to go with my Profoto B1 set and together they all work perfectly.
