Profoto D2 Duo overview

  • 1Description

With the D2 Duo 1000/1000 AirTTL 2-Light Kit, Profoto offers two advanced high-performance 1000Ws monolights with power cords and a padded case. At 0.03-1.2 sec, the D2 is almost twice as fast as its predecessor and capable of 20 flash per second bursts. Other features include wireless TTL with the separately purchased Air Remote TTL-C for Canon and TTL-N for Nikon, action-freezing flash durations and High Speed Sync support up to 1/8000 sec.

  • D2 1000Ws AirTTL Monolight

Having wowed us with the introduction of the battery-powered TTL B1 and B2 flash heads, Profoto does it again with the AC powered D2 1000 AirTTL Monolight. Building on the foundation of the popular D1, this light maxes-out the D1 performance specs while adding wireless TTL from the B1 and B2. With the D2, "speed" is the operative word.

The D2 1000 recycles to full power in 1.2 seconds, almost half the time as the D1 1000, and in Freeze Mode, achieves flash durations as short as 1/50,000 of a second, outperforming most studio pack systems. That's good news for special effects photographers and sports shooters. It can also shoot bursts of 20 flashes per second so you're sure to capture peak action or several versions of it. In addition, the D2 also supports High Speed Sync up to 1/8000 of a second for photographers who want to stop action or use wide apertures with full ambient light control. The 10-stop power range gives ample choices to achieve your objective.

Besides super-fast operation, the D2 shortens your shooting time with on-board TTL compatibility. Pros who formerly turned their noses up at the term "point-and-shoot" as amateurish will learn to love this technology. Simply set your lights up, set the camera to TTL and shoot. The first shot is nearly always a keeper. The key to this control is the optional Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Operating on 2.4 GHz bandwidth, the wireless transmitter, really a controller, has 8 frequency channels and with 6 groups and a range of up to 330' for TTL triggering and 1000' for normal triggering. Each channel has power ratio capability of +/- 2 stops. If you prefer to use manual, you have 10 stops of power variation.

The D2 also features an enhanced, intuitive LCD screen display. Modeling Light, Ready Indicator, Mode, Sync, Channel, and Group are easily selected through the Settings button. The display even flips around the way your iPhone does in case you're working with the head upside down or hanging it overhead. The D2 has a self-seeking multi-voltage (100-240) power supply for worldwide use, too. Profoto has covered so many features on the photographers wish list that you'll wonder what they can come up with next.

    Catch the Moment
The D2 can shoot up to 20 flashes per second. That's fast enough to catch the best of any moment. Ask your subject to jump, and you'll have 20 mid-air exposures to choose from.
    Freeze the Moment
The D2 1000 can provide super quick flash durations up to 1/50,000 of a second. Shoot a splash of water, and it will be frozen in midair.
    Shoot with Ease Using TTL
Point-and-shoot in TTL Mode using the separately purchased Air Remote TTL-C (for Canon) or TTL-N (for Nikon). Switch to Manual Mode and control the light with intuitive buttons and menus.
    Overpower Any Light
The D2 packs enough punch to overpower the available light in almost any situation. Its power is also an advantage when shooting at longer distances or when using larger light shaping tools.
    Control Your Surroundings
Profoto High-Speed Sync (HSS) enables you to shoot with shutter speeds up to 1/8000 of a second. Use HSS to shoot with a wide aperture in bright conditions or to freeze action with absolute sharpness.

Profoto D2 Duo reviews

D2 Duo 1000/1000 AirTTL 2-Light Kit is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal Studio and Location light with HSS and fast flash I am a full time Studio and Location photographer. Currently own multiple sets of B1 and B2 battery operated Profoto lights for location shooting. The HSS feature with the additional 1 full stop over B1 and 2 stops over B2 made these lights appealing for the studio and for demanding location shots. We are now able to shoot in bright daylight at 1/8,000th second at f2.8 and completely over-power the sun with deep blue skies. Also the Freeze mode is great for freezing water droplets in mid air and other high speed action shots. The one drawback of the D2 Lights are that they are VERY top heavy, even more so than the B1's so you need really heavy duty light stands, and if shooting on location in any kind of breeze, you will need lots of sandbags. Build quality is the top-of-the-line Profoto quality we have all come to expect. Lights are easy to use, menu system is intuitive, software is easy to update via USB, and all our Profoto RFi modifiers, softboxes, beautydishes, etc all work across the D2/B1/B2 range

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great decision I use 4 1000's constantly and am extremely pleased with the results. Super fast, intuitive, durable, but expensive. I first questioned the high price tags on all Profoto products, but after using the gear for more than a year now, I'm convinced I made the right decision. I plan to purchase three additional 1000's for the studio, and will have to sell a kidney to eat, but as long as I keep freezing the action, it's worth it. When purchasing peripherals, forget about the snoots, get the grids. Heavy duty C-stands are a must, I use Avenger with 5lb sand bags and have no problems even with a boom extended. You know the awesome feeling you get when unboxing a new toy? It doesn't compare to what you'll feel when viewing image results after using these lights for the first time. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Expensive and worth it! I love all my Profoto products. They are phenomenal. I had a little difficulty at first with my D2 kit in the studio when using them with some of my older Norman and Photogenic lights in TTL mode, forgetting that once TTL with my Nikon Air remote, that i need to turn to manual when adding the other lights. Some of my other non-Profoto lights would misfire and the TTL exposures were all heavily underexposed. the other lights were not playing well with them in TTL modes. Once I thought about it, i remembered that I had to turn off the TTL setting on my remote after I had the balance that i wanted with just my Profotos firing before i added the non-TTL lights. The settings from my TTL exposures were held at the same levels once they were switched to manual. And these lights are powerful! I've been using my B1 kit and B2 kits on location for almost two years and have been waiting for the right time to get a studio kit as well. the D2 kit was worth the wait.
