Fujifilm X-A3 overview

  • 1Description

With a retro styling and selfie-first design, the silver X-A3 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens from Fujifilm will be a ton of fun for photographers. The X-A3 incorporates a newly developed 24.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor that can create sharp, detailed images at sensitivities up to ISO 25600 and continuous shooting speeds of up to 6 fps. An electronic shutter option is now available as well, allowing for shutter speeds up to an incredible 1/32000 second. In addition to stills, the X-A3 even offers Full HD video at up to 60 fps. Addtionally, in creating a selfie-ready tool, the X-A3 has a touchscreen LCD that can tilt up to 180° and uses a slide-and-tilt mechanism to ensure 100% visibility as you shoot. The touchscreen also provides added functionality with Touch AF, Touch Shoot, and other controls.

The camera features a redesigned body with an aluminum top cover, front plate, and top dials as well as a faux leather grip that has an excellent feel. In addition to this it has a variety of new features to make shooting easier, including a Self-Timer with Smile Detection, Buddy Timer, and Group Timer settings. There is even an Eye Detection mode to ensure excellent selfies. In order to ensure optimal performance, the X-A3 utilizes a 77-point contrast-detect AF system. Built-in Wi-Fi further enhances usability with a direct connection to smartphones and instax SHARE printers. Additionally, it embraces Fujifilm's long history with the inclusion of Film Simulations and Advanced Filters.

Included with the X-A3 is the XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS II lens, which covers wide-angle to portrait-length perspectives with its 24-76mm equivalent focal length range. Three aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element reduce aberrations and distortions throughout the zoom range and an optical image stabilization system compensates for up to 3.5 stops of camera shake to produce sharper, clearer imagery in low-light conditions.

24.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
A large APS-C-sized 24.2MP CMOS sensor can produce high-resolution still imagery and video with notable low-light quality and sensitivity to ISO 25600. The camera provides quick performance throughout the camera, including a start-up time of 0.5 seconds, AF speed of 0.3 seconds, shutter lag time of 0.05 seconds, and a shooting interval time of 0.4 seconds. Additionally, the sensor lends itself to producing Full HD 1080p videos at 60 fps. Users can even use focus peaking during video recording.
Body Design
The sleek form factor is ideal for everyday use and is benefitted by an intuitive control layout that incorporates top control dials as well as a dedicated Q Menu shortcut button for quickly accessing some of the most oft-used camera and exposure settings. Also integrated within the body design is a 180° tilting 3.0" touchscreen LCD, which is suitable for vivid monitoring and image playback, as well as front-facing selfies. Both face and eye detection are available, too, to ensure proper exposure and focus on the most meaningful of subjects.

On the rear of the camera, all of the physical controls are positioned to the right side of the body to benefit one-handed operation. A dedicated button is also available to activate the self-timer functions.
77-Point Contrast-Detect AF System
In order to ensure crisp, sharp images, the X-A3 uses a 77-point contrast-based autofocus system along with a variety of scene-specific modes. This also includes new touchscreen-enabled settings such as Touch AF and Touch Shoot. Other settings include Smile Detection, Buddy Timer, and Group Timer modes which help capture the perfect moment. Also, when the LCD is tilted upwards it automatically activates Eye Detection AF. An addition to this model is a new single-point mode with 49 areas for more precise autofocusing.
Built-In Wi-Fi Connectivity
Integrated Wi-Fi connectivity permits instant wireless transferring of images to linked mobile devices for direct sharing online. Mobile devices can also be used to embed location data into the photos taken with the X-A3 for geotagging. Additionally, the X-A3 is also compatible with the optional instax SHARE Printer, when using its dedicated app, for on-the-go printing of your favorite snapshots.
Film Simulation Modes
Taking advantage of Fujifilm's vast history in traditional film-based photography, the X-A3 integrates several Film Simulation modes to mimic the look and feel of some of Fujifilm's classic reversal film types: Provia offers natural-looking tones for everyday shooting, Velvia produces a more dramatic and rich tonality with deeper color saturation, and Astia gives less contrast for a softer depiction of skin tones. A Classic Chrome mode can also be used to create a nostalgic appearance characterized by muted tones and deep color reproduction. PRO Neg. Hi and PRO Neg. Standard are available now as well for an even greater selection of film stocks. Additionally, Black & White and Sepia modes are also available for a classic, monochromatic appearance.
Other Camera Features
  • Portrait Enhancer mode can be used to lighten skin tones for a clear and smooth appearance that is especially ideal for taking selfies.
  • Super i-Flash accurately controls the light output of the built-in flash depending on the subject type for more natural-appearing imagery.
  • The included battery can provide up to 410 shots per charger.
  • Advanced Filters can be used to creatively adjust the look of your photos, and include Toy Camera, Miniature, High Key, Low Key, Dynamic Tone, Soft Focus, Pop Color, and Partial Color (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple) settings. Shooting modes: Advanced SR AUTO, Program AE, Aperture Priority AE, Sport, Advanced Mode, Custom, Manual, Night, Scene Position, Shutter Priority AE, Portrait Enhancer, and Landscape.
  • Scene Position settings: Portrait, Sunset, Party, Night (Tripod), Snow, Flower, Fireworks, Beach, and Text.
  • In-camera raw processing.
  • Time lapse and panorama functions.
XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS II Lens
Included with the camera body is the versatile XC 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OIS II lens; a standard zoom providing a 24-76mm equivalent focal length range to suit working in a wide variety of situations. The all-glass, 12-elements-in-10-groups construction incorporates three aspherical elements and one extra-low dispersion element to minimize chromatic aberrations throughout the zoom range for greater clarity, sharpness, and color fidelity. Additionally, this lens integrates a 3.5-stop-effective optical image stabilization system to compensate for the effects of camera shake to render sharper imagery in difficult lighting conditions. The lens also features seven rounded aperture blades to produce a smooth out-of-focus quality when using selective focus and shallow depth of field techniques.

    Fujifilm X-A3 reviews

X-A3 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 16-50mm Lens (Silver) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great camera except one major flaw The camera is great, nice design with many nice features, images are sharp. The only thing i was disappointed at is the wifi feature, which is one of the main reasons i wanted to upgrade my old camera. The wifi gets disconnected all the time and the app is just horrible, the functionality sucks and it looks like some amateur app. I am shocked Fuji would make an app like this without further testing and development

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lovely camera This is a very nice camera with a new 24MP bayer sensor (looks like the latest Sony sensor). I had almost all Fuji cameras with both types of sensors, and this one produces the best image quality, no contest. I wish Fuji used bayer CFA in their more advanced models instead of x-trans. I especially like how well this camera handles the white balance in various light conditions. The out of camera jpegs are very good. The previous generation had bad sharpening artifacts and bad high ISO noise reduction. All these problems are now gone. The quality of jpegs is just as good (I think the colors are even better) than the raw files processed in Light Room. The touch sensitive LCD is bright, crisp, and responsive -- good job, Fuji. The electronic shutter is very handy if you need to stay quiet or when shooting wide open in daylight. The kit lens is very good optically, but it's all plastic with slow aperture. The edges at 16mm are stretched -- not good. The AF performance is adequate for slow moving subjects. I wasn't able to focus on my dog, jumping around and trying to lick the new camera. But I had the same problem with my Sony A7Rii, though Sony does feel faster. The camera itself is light and when paired with 27mm f/2.8 lens becomes very inconspicuous and even pocketable (if you have large pockets). The cons: it looks and feels cheaper than the previous A1/2 models. The shutter became louder, but it operates faster than before. Fuji no longer provides a separate battery charger -- bad idea, Fuji. The grip is slightly bigger than in the previous models, but still absolutely inadequate -- that's the only thing Fuji can learn from Sony. This camera doesn't have an electronic viewfinder. I actually prefer shooting from the waist level, so it's not a problem for me, but your mileage may vary. I'm not into video, can't comment on the video quality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Lot of Bang for the Buck ! I bought this primarily for use a a back-up for my X-T20. It is very small and lightweight. Personally, as with most other Fuji cameras, I wish it were larger. As a dedicated Fuji user, the control layout is both familiar and easy to navigate for me. Photos taken with this camera are great, even with the low end kit lens supplied, and only the fussiest of photographers will not be satisfied. I don't do videos, so I can't comment of that function. Only the lack of an EVF keeps it from getting five stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Camera Very Nice Camera. Takes quality pictures like a DSLR in a smaller package. Focus is fast and picture quality is very good. Very easy to change settings. Only downside is no view finder but you twist your LCD screen forward if you are taking a selfie.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb camera with access to those excellent Fujifilm lenses Note that my wife and I have the XT 2, X Pro 2 and X 100F so we are dedicated Fujifilm users with a number of lenses at our disposal. This camera was a surprise. We bought one to try out what is a relatively low cost APS-C ILC since it is small, light and takes the excellent X series lenses. It has a 24 MP sensor, albeit with a standard Bayer array, and seemed to have all the controls we expect from much more expensive cameras. Our interest stemmed from the fact that it is small and light and easy to have with you. We love the jpg output from the camera and the included XC series lens, although lower build quality (plastic rather than metal) than the XF series produces seriously good quality pictures. If you are not familiar with Fujifilm cameras the controls may seem mysterious, but we rapidly adapted and the lack of a viewfinder was only an issue in really bright sunlight. As a point and shoot it is easy to use with good face tracking and automatic scene adaptation, but you can easily tweak this camera so that it can be used where no smart phone camera would succeed. We did a comparison with the iPhone 7 Plus camera in a number of scenarios (ranging from interior to panoramas) and this camera wins hands down. We love it. The build quality is good but not built to the same standards as their more expensive X series cameras (X100F etc.) but it cost half the price, so expecting it to be the same would not be reasonable. We compared the camera to the much vaunted Sony 6000 series and much prefer the usability and output from this camera, but then we are sold on the Fujifilm jpg output. Add the 35 mm f2 lens and you have a compact walkabout camera with similar output to the X100F. But you can then swap out the lens for the included kit lenses or add one of the excellent telephoto lens to make it the ultimate use anywhere camera. This camera is ideal for the enthusiastic amateur or back up camera for your more expensive Fujifilm bodies. Thoroughly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Camera Easy Accessible Features This is a good camera for people wanting to have control of the rendering of their picture yet don't want to go into the technicalities of full fledge cameras. The selfie feature is great but requires to switch on the camera once the screen is completely pulled up and pushed against the body of the camera. It took us some effort to find this out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great beginner camera this is a very nice camera. It's very easy to use and the pictures come out great. I'd say a big con, at least for me, is no viewfinder. This is okay as the LCDshows a spot on picture of what the pictures look at. As well as this, the menu isn't the best menu when it comes to finding things. The selfie feature works nicely. Overall this is a great entry level camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Easy to Use Love this camera! Fits perfectly well into my hand. Easy to learn how to use as a first time camera, or as a lazy photographer like myself. The one big drawback is that you can't see the display screen very well outdoors if it is bright/full sun, and since there is no viewfinder, you will need tos shield yourself in order to see your settings.
