ZEISS Milvus 15mm f/2.8 Overview

An impressive wide-angle prime for Canon EF-mount cameras, the Milvus 15mm f/2.8 ZE from ZEISS utilizes a Distagon optical concept to control distortion and produce sharp, clean imagery with a dynamic perspective. A floating elements system is employed for consistent performance throughout the focus range while five anomalous partial dispersion glass elements and a pair of aspherical elements are featured to control chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased clarity and sharpness. For minimizing flare and ghosting, an enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions.

The manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

Wide-angle prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount cameras, however can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 24mm equivalent focal length
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture suits working in available-light conditions and is also well-suited for astrophotography use.
Distagon optical concept affords high sharpness, well-corrected image quality from edge-to-edge, and very low field curvature.
Five anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
Two aspherical elements control distortion and spherical aberrations in order to produce greater sharpness and more accurate rendering.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 9.8" to infinity.
Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

ZEISS Milvus 15mm f/2.8 Reviews

Color Richness

I recently used this lens in the badlands of New Mexico and the one feature I was most impressed with was the color richness. Of course as a Zeiss lens, it is tack sharp with the purest whites. Other than the natural distortions of a 15mm lens at the perimeter of the image it is perfect! Love it!

Excellent; Compatible with LEE SW150 Filter System

By Nick
Rated 5 out of 5

There is little published information regarding which filters to use with this lens. I can confirm that—as tested on a Nikon D810—this lens is completely compatible with the LEE SW150 II filter system. The filter holder attaches to an adapter which is sold separately. For this lens, the required adapter is the 95mm screw-in type. The adapter fits the lens correctly and the focusing ring is still accessible. The LEE filter holder is obviously designed for LEE filters, but any filter of this standardized size will work. I use the LEE circular polarizer, but I use NiSi neutral density and graduated neutral density filters (they are made of glass and are more color neutral and affect sharpness less than the resin LEE grads). There is no vignetting at any focusing distance at any aperture. Tested on a tripod-mounted D810 in controlled lighting conditions. I hope that helps for anyone unsure of how this lens can be used with filters. Aside from that, the quality of this lens is as good as every internet reviewer has ever said. The build quality is unparalleled. The weather sealing actually work. The colors, contrast, and flair control are exceptional. The image sharpness is razor sharp when the lens is stopped down (and also excellent wide open). Focusing manually is no challenge because of the very short focal length, though you will always get the best out of it when focusing from a tripod in live view. Again because of the short focal length, shooting hand held in most lighting conditions is quite easy. You will not regret buying this lens.

Outstanding

Just pick one up. This lens is just outstanding. Tack sharp, no sun flare. Outstanding clarity, contrast and resolution. I traded in my nikon 14-24 and will never look back. This lens makes the 14-24 look like some cheap kit lens.

No infinity focus on edges

By Debejyo
Rated 2 out of 5

This lens lack infinity focus along edges (about 20% of the edge). When using hyperfocal scale, the center 80% shows in focus, but the edge 20% (long dimension) is out of focus for far objects. Nearby objects are in focus though. I intend to write this up with examples of my images and post it soon. I'll update this review then. Until then, I just want the buyers to be aware. I had a different expectation when I was buying a Zeiss (not my first). This seems to be a lens design flaw. I read about this online somewhere but I did not believe it till I experienced it first hand.

Joy to use

I rated this lens five stars because of the quality construction of the lens and the quality pics the lens produces. The metal construction, smoothness of both focus and changing the aperture settings exudes quality. The lens is a joy to use.

What is the diameter of the focus ring? I would like to put a gear ring to use a follow focus, but I need to know the diameter to buy an exact ring. The diameter of the focus ring is the same as its previous version Distagon T * 15mm f / 2.8 ZE?

The diameter of the focus ring on this lens is 80mm or 3.15 inches. That information is listed on this spec sheet. https://bhpho.to/38vHqaL

question

Can I use Lee push-on filter holder on this lens?
Asked by: Runkun Z.
The Zeiss Milvus 15mm f/2.8 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F has a 95mm front filter thread, so you could use the LEE Filters Foundation Kit with the LEE Filters Adapter Ring for Foundation Kit. It would be a better option than attempting to use the push-on filter holder. That being said, as the lens has yet to be released, we would not be able to verify whether or not it would be compatible with the push-on filter holder.

Hello, Can I use the aperture ring on this lens with the Nikon D850?
Asked by: Mohammed
You have the choice of controlling the aperture using the aperture ring on the lens or electronically via the camera. This choice must be set in the camera by going to the Customize Command Dial setting F4, described at: https://onlinemanual.nikonimglib.com/d850/en/18_menu_guide_05_f04.html. Since the Milvus series incorporates a CPU, the aperture range is automatically recognized by the camera.

question

Which of the two filters is the best? Heliopan or Zeiss polarizer? For this lens.Thank you.
Asked by: Andriy T.
I don't have much experience with Heliopan, but I have several Zeiss polarizers for various lens. I have the Zeiss polarizer for this lens and it is amazing. However, I think it depends on what type of photos you want to take and location.

question

Is it compatible with Sony A7s ii ?
Asked by: Anonymous
The ZEISS ZE lenses are designed for Canon cameras using the EF mount. If you are in need of an ultra wide angle lens for the Sony A7SII camera, then we can recommend the ZEISS Batis 2.8/18 or the Loxia 2.8/21 - both of which feature a native E mount and are designed for the Sony FF mirrorless cameras. https://<a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1243591-REG/zeiss_2136_691_batis_18mm_f_2_8_lens.html target= _blank >www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1243591-REG/zeiss_2136_691_batis_18mm_f_2_8_lens.html</a>https://<a href= http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1189220-REG/zeiss_2131_999_loxia_21mm_f_2_8_lens.html target= _blank >www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1189220-REG/zeiss_2131_999_loxia_21mm_f_2_8_lens.html</a>
