ZEISS 15mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

An impressive wide-angle prime for Nikon F-mount DSLRs, the Milvus 15mm f/2.8 ZF.2 from ZEISS utilizes a Distagon optical concept to control distortion and produce sharp, clean imagery with a dynamic perspective. A floating elements system is also employed for consistent performance throughout the aperture range while five anomalous partial dispersion glass elements and a pair of aspherical elements are featured to control chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased clarity and sharpness. For minimizing flare and ghosting, an enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions.

Its manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. This ZF.2 lens also features a manual aperture ring that can be manually de-clicked for silent, stepless switching between aperture setting to benefit video applications. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

This 15mm f/2.8 lens is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount DSLRs, and can also be used with DX models where it will provide a 22.5mm equivalent focal length
Distagon optical design incorporates five anomalous partial dispersion elements to greatly control distortions and chromatic aberrations, as well as color fidelity and clarity. Additionally, two aspherical elements are featured to minimize spherical aberrations for improved sharpness.
Floating elements system maintains consistent performance when working with both close-up and distant subjects.
Enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating controls ghosting and flare for high contrast, color-neutral imagery.
Wide-angle perspective pairs with a minimum focusing distance of 9.8" for exaggerating foreground subjects and creating a broad sense of space.
Manual focus design is benefitted by laser-engraved focusing and depth of field scales, along with an IR position dot and hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
The manual aperture ring has clicked indicators throughout aperture range. Using the included De-Click Tool, this ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

    ZEISS 15mm f/2.8 reviews

    Milvus 15mm f/2.8 ZF.2 Lens for Nikon F is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly Sharp I had rented the classic version of this lens several times. Hoping for a removable lens hood and the better coatings, I waited to buy until Zeiss made a Milvus version of the lens. As great as the classic version was, this is even better. It is so sharp that in an overall photograph of a room, titles on book spines on library shelves can easily be read. Just today, I used it while photographing a tiny parts room at a repair facility. All the parts and the labels on the trays are visible. Adobe's lens profile for it eliminates almost all of the distortion along the edges. The late Dr. Hubert Nasse from Zeiss said that the classic version of the 15mm lens was one of Zeiss's best. This Milvus version is even better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SHARP Having own the original version (wt hood modification) I can say that the new Milvus is better than the original ZF.2 for starters it is sharper in the corners, weather sealed and a removable hood. I shoot some IR photography and although the original lens was great for IR this versions produces a very bad hotspot. Overall is a a fantastic UWA a great improvement over the original version.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Outstanding Just pick one up. This lens is just outstanding. Tack sharp, no sun flare. Outstanding clarity, contrast and resolution. I traded in my nikon 14-24 and will never look back. This lens makes the 14-24 look like some cheap kit lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent; Compatible with LEE SW150 Filter System There is little published information regarding which filters to use with this lens. I can confirm that—as tested on a Nikon D810—this lens is completely compatible with the LEE SW150 II filter system. The filter holder attaches to an adapter which is sold separately. For this lens, the required adapter is the 95mm screw-in type. The adapter fits the lens correctly and the focusing ring is still accessible. The LEE filter holder is obviously designed for LEE filters, but any filter of this standardized size will work. I use the LEE circular polarizer, but I use NiSi neutral density and graduated neutral density filters (they are made of glass and are more color neutral and affect sharpness less than the resin LEE grads). There is no vignetting at any focusing distance at any aperture. Tested on a tripod-mounted D810 in controlled lighting conditions. I hope that helps for anyone unsure of how this lens can be used with filters. Aside from that, the quality of this lens is as good as every internet reviewer has ever said. The build quality is unparalleled. The weather sealing actually work. The colors, contrast, and flair control are exceptional. The image sharpness is razor sharp when the lens is stopped down (and also excellent wide open). Focusing manually is no challenge because of the very short focal length, though you will always get the best out of it when focusing from a tripod in live view. Again because of the short focal length, shooting hand held in most lighting conditions is quite easy. You will not regret buying this lens.
