ZEISS Milvus 135mm f/2 Overview

A prime medium telephoto distinguished by its bright design and sophisticated optics, the Nikon F-mount Milvus 135mm f/2 ZF.2 from ZEISS is a Sonnar-type lens offering high sharpness, speed, and accurate contrast and color rendering. The optical design utilizes four anomalous partial dispersion glass elements to nearly eliminate chromatic aberrations and other distortions for clean, well-corrected imagery. A floating elements system is also used, for consistent performance throughout the focusing range, in order to achieve even sharpness and clarity. An enhanced ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has also been applied to significantly reduce ghosting and lens flare for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in difficult lighting conditions.

The manual focus design is complemented by a rubberized focus ring for fine-tuned, precise control over your focus position. Additionally, Milvus-series lenses also feature an equally aesthetic and durable frosted, anodized metal lens-barrel surface along with a weather-sealed construction to protect against dust and moisture.

Short telephoto prime is designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, however can also be used with DX models where it provides a 202.5mm equivalent focal length.
Impressively bright f/2 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Sonnar optical concept suits the combination of a large maximum aperture and long focal length, and also contributes to notable sharpness, well-controlled flare, and high contrast.
Four anomalous partial dispersion elements are used to significantly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating has been applied to each lens surface to help minimize reflections and provide greater contrast and color fidelity.
Floating elements system helps to maintain consistent image quality throughout the entire focusing range, from 2.6' to infinity.
Manual focus design is benefitted by focusing and depth of field scales along with hard stops at both infinity and minimum focusing positions.
Manual aperture ring has clicked indicators throughout aperture range. Using the included De-Click Tool, this ring can be mechanically 'de-clicked' for smooth, silent rotation throughout the aperture range; making it ideal for video applications.
Weather-resistant construction includes internal seals to guard against dust and moisture as well as a blue sealing ring at the lens mount to protect the lens-camera interface.
All-metal lens barrel has a frosted, anodized surface along with a rubberized focusing ring for both durability and improved tactile control.

ZEISS Milvus 135mm f/2 Reviews

One of the best in the Milvus line up!

I have owned this lens for some time now. First with my D850, then on my Nikon Z7. Now I am getting an adapter for my Leica SL2S. A soft falloff wide open and the focus throw allows for precise focus. With zoom magnification and focus peaking on mirrorless bodies it is a real pleasure to use. The colors and sharpness are already great OOC. I owned the Otus trio and sold them because they were clinically too perfect (not to mention HUGE). I am migrating to lens' now that have some character. This Milvus exhibits character. It should pair well with the SL2S.

This is not a walk around lens, but using it for the right subjects there is none better. Perfect match for my Nikon D850. Very happy with my purchase.

World Class Optics

I received the Zeiss Milvus 135mm f/2 this morning. I tested it outside on my RRS tripod, hands-free, with a 3-second delay on the electronic shutter. I focused on my Spyder LenCal. Additionally, I also took test shots of tree bark to verify the outstanding micro contrast this lens captures. This is a phenomenal portrait lens - pristine even wide open! The contrast starts to noticeably slightly fall off with diffraction at f/10. I took test shots at every 1/3 stop from wide open at f/2 to f/22 - attached are samples of just a few. The first image shows the full view capture at f/2 of the target positioned 10 feet away from my D850. The following images are 100% crops of the labeled full-stop apertures.

So Far So Good

I got this for COVID times interview shoots, so I can be a bit further away from the subject. I'm usually 70-100ish. It's a gorgeous lens, using it on a C300 Mkii. Wide open is lovely, the depth of focus at f2 is more than I hoped for and does a great job making boring backgrounds look more exciting. Focus ring is a bit tight but it'll get looser with use.

Zeiss Milvus 135 ƒ/2 Nikon Mount

I'am an amateur enthusiast and have just recently purchased the Zeiss Milvus 135mm ƒ2 lens and use it with a Nikon D850. This lens is spectacular in every way. I was worried I would not be able to adjust to the manual focus only of this lens, that is not even a concern a little practice and familiarization will yield incredible results. Please don't let the manual focus deter you!!!. I don't have much knowledge of all the technical aspects of this lens but this is a special very useful lens and you will love it. See sample.

Heavily decentered on the right side

Hi, I bought the first version with full name of the proud founder of this company. Even though the lens was covered by one year warranty Zeiss returned the lens to me unrepaired - claiming that this heavily decentered optic is an error of Canons alignment of their sensor! Can You believe this? Yes, that is what they've said! That person wrote: We had to take only 2 out of 7 cameras - all other had asymmetrical sensor position. So please be careful, You will be much better served by bestsellers that You can return then by these german-quality-hyped low-QC lenses. I had issues before, with 2/35 Distagon. Same story, three bodies, same error, but it was smaller than this one. Just remember, Zeiss is lagging behind most of other companies. The only thing they have is hyped reputation that is far far away from real world. Please stop dreaming about Zeiss (that thing died long time ago), dream about photography and save a lot of money buying better and cheaper lenses. Customer care of Zeiss company is full of soft-bullies that will talk You into accepting their mistake and responsibility. If You do not know owners of Zeiss, do not buy! Absolutely not recommended!

Optical Perfection

This is the most optically perfect lens I've ever used and owned. There's no flaws that any sane person could speak of. Virtually no CA wide open, contrasty, excellent rendering, close focusing, ultra high resolution, it will out resolve your sensor. Take your time to focus on a tripod and set the self timer to see what this lens is truly capable of. Bokeh is nice and creamy. Colors are amazing. This lens is magic. It should be an Otus lens, because even Zeiss regards it as one of the best they've got in their line up, but somehow you get this one for a relative deal. Get it and enjoy.

Would this lens work with the Panasonic S1H and a Sigma MC-21 adaptor?
Asked by: Ian
You'd be able to mount the lens using the MC-21 adapter, but as with any cross-branded adapters, your auto-focus performance may be compromised.

question

Can I use this Canon 135mm lens on my Sony a7rii body ? What is the best lens adapter/converter to use with it,, that will relay info and not degrade picture quality?
Asked by: Anonymous
The ZEISS Milvus ZE lenses were designed for cameras using the EF mount. The lens can be adapted to cameras with a shorter flange focal distance via 3rd party adapters. These do nothing more than position the lens to the proper distance from the sensor so the lens focuses at infinity. There is no degradation in image quality when using adapters of this type, since there are no additional optics involved. Since the Milvus ZE lens uses and electronic aperture, you will need a 3rd party adapter that allows control of the aperture via the camera body.
