DxO ONE overview

  • 1Description

Upping your mobile photography capabilities, the DxO ONE is a sleek digital camera designed for use with your iPhone or iPad. Its compact, take-everywhere form factor incorporates a Lightning connector for attaching to your iOS device, and a dedicated app offers intuitive camera control, image playback, and live view shooting. Beyond making a physical connection with an iOS device, this camera also features built-in Wi-Fi for wireless remote shooting to suit stationary shooting applications, such as taking group portraits, long exposures, or astrophotography.

In regards to imaging, the ONE features a large 20.2MP 1" BSI-CMOS sensor to benefit working in a variety of lighting conditions and enables the SuperRAW capture mode for increased clarity and reduced noise for extreme low-light shooting. Full HD 1080p/30 video recording is also supported as well as the use of shutter speeds up to 1/20000 sec and sensitivities to ISO 51200. The wide-angle 32mm f/1.8 equivalent lens also complements working in difficult lighting conditions, as well as enables greater control over depth of field. The ONE is built to expand mobile imaging possibilities while retaining the intuitiveness and efficiency of always having your camera with you.

As a complement to your existing iPhone or iPad, the ONE retains a self-contained design and utilizes an internal lithium-ion battery for power and accepts microSD memory cards for saving your imagery. Dedicated shooting modes, such as Selfie or Sports, can be used in addition to conventional manual exposure modes, and a contrast-detection AF system helps to ensure sharp results with touch-to-focus control accessible via the iOS app.

Designed for Use with iPhone and iPad
The unique, compact form factor of the camera is designed for use with an iPhone or iPad, and connects to the mobile device via its Lightning port. A dedicated app offers intuitive control over camera settings, live view monitoring, image playback, and the ability to save imagery to your mobile device for instant sharing.

The DxO ONE is compatible with the iPhone SE, 6s Plus, 6s, 6 Plus, 6, 5s, 5c, 5, iPad Pro, Air 2, Air, mini 4, 3, 2, or iPad (4th gen.), running iOS 9.0 or later, or WatchOS 2.0. The camera is compatible with these mobile devices via Lightning connector, and can also be paired with them via Wi-Fi for remote control.
Built-In Wi-Fi and Remote Control
Extending its shooting flexibility, the ONE can now be controlled remotely via Wi-Fi using either an existing wireless network (LAN) or by enabling a direct Wi-Fi connection (peer-to-peer) with your mobile device. Wi-Fi authorization can be performed using the Lightning connector to expedite configuring the wireless settings.

Once connected, the ONE can be used remotely for instances where the camera needs to remain still, such as for astrophotography, long exposures, or group selfies, and recorded images can be sent directly and immediately to the linked iOS device. When shooting remotely, the rear OLED can be configured to display a framing assist guide for more accurate compositions, and the touchscreen OLED also permits shooting mode navigation sans the iOS mobile device.
20.2MP 1" BSI-CMOS Sensor
A large 20.2MP 1" back-illuminated CMOS sensor offers rich image quality and notable low-light performance, using the same image processing technology found in DxO's software, with extended sensitivity from ISO 100-51200. Shutter speeds are available from 30 to 1/20000 sec and both manual and automated shooting modes can be used.

Beyond still imagery, the ONE can also record Full HD 1080p/30 video as well as HD 720p/120 movies.
SuperRAW and DNG File Formats
By default, the ONE is configured to record in JPG + DNG; resulting in one file for quick web sharing and another with greater latitude for post-production. The camera can also record using a proprietary SuperRAW capture mode, which takes four successive images and composites them to gain increased sensitivity and reduced noise to suit extreme low-light shooting. The JPG + DNG shooting mode offers extensive compatibility with image editing applications while the SuperRAW .dxo file format is solely compatible with DxO editing applications.
Wide-Angle Prime Lens
A bright, wide-angle 11.9mm f/1.8 prime lens is incorporated into the sleek design and provides a 32mm equivalent focal length. A six element design employs aspherical elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions in order to produce sharp, clear imagery with high color accuracy.

The fast f/1.8 maximum aperture offers control over depth of field and benefits working in low-light conditions. Shallow depth of field imagery is further complemented by a six-blade diaphragm for a smooth out-of-focus quality.
Design
  • Sleek, portable construction is designed to be used in conjunction with an iPhone or iPad and connects via the mobile device's Lightning port.
  • Lightning connector is collapsible to maintain a sleek form factor when not connected to an iPhone or iPad.
  • +/- 60° pivoting design better supports working from high and low shooting angles as well as front-facing selfie compositions.
  • A built-in sliding lens cover both protects the lens when not in use and turns the camera on when ready to shoot.
  • An OLED touchscreen allows intuitive control over settings when shooting unconnected to an iPhone or iPad.
  • Both a gyroscope and an accelerometer are used to recognize the shooting orientation.
  • Compact form factor is accentuated by a forged aluminum-alloy shell for durability.
  • A micro-USB port allows you to connect the ONE to a computer for offloading imagery and also serves as the charging port for the internal battery.
  • Built-in lithium-ion battery offers approximately 200 shots per charge.
Other Camera Features
  • Image files can be saved to a microSD memory card as well as transferred directly to the iOS device.
  • A contrast-detection AF system helps to ensure precise focusing as closely as 7.9" away. Face-detection is also available to bias focusing performance on recognized faces within the scene.
  • Single-shot, continuous, and tap-to-focus focusing modes are available.
  • For adjusting your field of view, 3x digital zoom can be used to gain a closer perspective of your subject.
  • Two-stage shutter button allows you to pre-focus and meter prior to making the exposure.
  • Electronic image stabilization is available for video recordings in order to minimize the appearance of handheld camera shake.
  • Selfie mode is automatically detected and starts a 3-2-1 countdown as well as brightens your iPhone/iPad's screen for increased lighting on your face. Camera modes: Auto, Sports, Portrait, Landscape, Night, Program, Aperture Priority, Speed Priority, Manual, and Selfie.

DxO ONE reviews

ONE Digital Camera with Wi-Fi is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing camera What a great camera for street photography. It fits in my pocket without making a bulge. The photo quality is excellent; I am able to recover tonal nuances shooting raw. The iPhone interface is well thought out (except for the fact that I had to remove the case from my phone to get the camera to attach). The low light performance of the super raw format is amazing. I'm getting good, noise free photos at ISO 12.,000. (You will need DxO Optic software). Only one significant drawback - the short battery life.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Simple device but make lots of different Capture picture like pro. The depth of field is easily obtain without much adjustment and the picture colour is very natural as compare to taking it without the DXO on a iPhone 7 which is very much yellowish Buying it from B&H is even better as it comes with freebies which cost you quite a bit. I would recommend anyone there to consider buying it from them as I did it online and they even sent it to the Asia. The only setback is you feel unsafe when passing around your phone with the DXO attached as there isn't any safety features to secure the DXO against the iPhone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really good but not totally great Great little pocket add on to the iPhone and ipad. Cost is a stretch but within what's tolerable for good tech. The construction feels solid. Dense little package. Sensor is great for anything better than extremely low light conditions. The higher iso just looks like artifacted painterly cr**. The app interface is sweet! Great to have a second raw option after Lightroom. Renders are surprisingly well matched between Lightroom raw dedicated camera capture and this 1 sensor. My greatest fear is Apple switching away from lightning, making this obsolete.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good image quality, but I don't think its practical In perfect daylight, and even good lighting, I would say that the image quality is on par with my iPhone 7. Where this camera blows away the iPhone is in very dark locations. Using the manual controls, you're able to get some killer shots. It's kind of an inconvenience to carry this around in my pocket and fumble around with it, open the connector and insert it into my phone, and then fire up the dxo camera app. If I traveling somewhere or going to do some shooting, I rather carry around a lightweight dedicated mirrorless camera with good lens. I feel that this camera attachment is a bit clunky and kind of awkward to hold and shoot with. While I was able to hold the camera and adjust, I don't feel that the lightning connector was secure and I had a fear that I was going to drop everything. I also don't like that I have to remove my case from either my iPad or iPhone to get the camera to attach.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Needs a lot of improvement. Just got it today and as of 11/30/2017, it seems like it does not support IPhone X. I connected it and does not recognize at all. Tried it on my old 7S and works fine. The connector is just long enough to connect to Iphone with no cover. Any kind of case or cover, it will not connect far in enough/not work. Picture quality looks only as good as the Iphone screen resolution so I need to download to computer with 4K monitor to maybe tell the difference. So is it worth the money? I am still questioning but I will continue to use it. Battery life is maybe One Hour which is not bad but not great either. Charge time is less than one hour so it is not bad. The unit gets warm during use but not uncomfortably hot. Remote connection has a lot of lag. but okay. I will continue to use it but will I buy it for my Camera/Gadget loving dad's Christmas gift? I don't know...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would not only buy again I woud gift it to everyone I know The quality of this camera is amazing. The photos and video equal the quality of my new Sony A 7ii camera. No more lugging around a heavy camera and lenses when I travel. The DXO snaps on quickly to my phone and I am ready to shoot on a moments notice. The software gives you many options and is simple to use. I placed the camera icon on my phone screen so when I flip it horizontally it is lands in the bottom left corner making it easy to snap the photo or flip to video. I am taking more photos than ever and rarely return home wishing I had my camera for that great shot that previously got away. Being able to use the camera attached to the phone for a larger viewing area or as an independent stand alone camera allows me to shoot just about any photo no matter the angle or unique situation. I gave the camera a 4 due to the battery life. For events when I want video and photos, I turn off the WIFI and store all the photos and video on the scan disk. If I have extra battery at the end of an event, I then send the photos to social media and my phone. I also keep a small charger available to top off the DXO. Do we ever have enough battery life on any camera? The size and software advantages of this camera and quality of photos and video far out weight the need to monitor battery life. Everyone in our family has the DXO app on their phone. The fun is seeing the different ways each family member uses the camera. We are all excited to use the Camera when we go to Africa this summer. My husband said he would buy DXO just for me if I don't take my Sony a 7ii. A little more practice and I might just be there. Buy the camera. Your photography will take on an entirely new creative experience.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera for quick snapshot Great quality camera. It's very sleek and easy to carry around and pull out. I'm a steet and music event photographer and it has really helped me out a bunch on my ventures. The only thing I can complain about is the speed of the app after taking photos, it's takes a few seconds to load. Other than that, I pretty much love this camera. I can get my photos onto my social media almost emediately after shooting. The photos are almost as nice as my Nikon d3300.
