Sony 50mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A normal-length prime with close-focusing capabilities, the FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens from Sony offers an impressive 1:1 maximum magnification, along with a 6.3" minimum focusing distance, for making life-size imagery of close-up subjects. Useful controls, such as a top-printed distance and magnification scale, focus range limiter, and focus hold button, all benefit more precise focusing adjustments for refined results. Complementing the handling capabilities, the optical design also incorporates both an aspherical and an extra-low dispersion element, which work to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased clarity throughout the focus range. Additionally, the lens sports a dust- and moisture-resistant design to benefit working in inclement weather conditions.

Standard prime macro lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, and can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with a 6.3" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. A focusing distance and magnification scale is also printed on the top of the lens to aid in more technical applications.
One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the lens design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
One aspherical element is incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between 6.3-11.8", 11.8"-infinity, or full, and a focus hold button is also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

Sony 50mm f/2.8 reviews

FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from The price vs. performance of this lens makes it a must have. I'm primarily a street photographer shooting architecture and people using rangefinder cameras. I recently decided to get into close up photography and chose to use a Sony Alpha 7 ii with the FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. I was a little apprehensive about the focusing accuracy I could achieve with this lens but I am very pleased with the results so far. It has produced natural looking images without distortion. Other characteristics I like about it are its small size, its lightweight and dust/moisture resistant which is important out in the field.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sufficient for the job in hand. For a full-frame Macro lens, it does the job and does it well. For anything else, it lacks. The autofocus is one of the worst I have ever used- slow and inaccurate- and found that I had no choice but to focus manually, whether for macro work or standard 50mm photography. AF-aside, great little lens that has good all-round potential. Feels like a flimsy bit of plastic to handle (it is) but the positive with that is that when combined with the Sony A7r ii, it's light weight and compact size really does make it a nifty-fifty and a good travel companion. Just be sure to never use the autofocus if you want any moving subjecs to be sharp!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Took it diving, because why not I purchased this lens to have something highly flexible for underwater photography. While 50mm is a little on the high side for most UW shooting (you tend to want something less then 24mm) I was able to get some killer shots with this lens. The ability for it to shift to macro mode when I found something small then back to full range when I went back to distance shooting was amazing. The sharpness is incredible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Macro Lens Had the 90mm macro, and it was wonderful, but very large and heavy. Bought the 50mm and love it. Much easier to handle and the results are great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very sharp I like the idea that you can change the distance focused.Manual Focus to Auto focus changeover very easy to use. Nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to carry around Very light and get very accurate and sharp photos; the only con I have is that in low light the auto focus tends to hunt and most of time does not find focus.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome little lens. Great little lens. Auto focusing is faster than the 90mm FE G but is a louder. Lens is super sharp, great bokeh. I like the slightly wider focal range when shooting static objects. For the price you can't beat it. Very useful on both my A7s and 6300 but out of focus areas are definitely more buttery on the FF sensor. Would recommend it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Super sharp and fair priced compared to other native mount This lens has very good performance for the price in regards to sharpness, the only draw back to this lens really is the auto focus. I have been using this lens on an A7R. It is slow compared to most modern auto focus lens and it spends some time hunting for focus if the lighting is even a little poor when your anywhere in the macro focus range. The lens itself also does not have built in stability control like the sony 90mm macro. I have been using this lens as both a walk around 50mm and as a macro lens as well. Using it during the day while walking around city shooting or hiking and setting the switch so it doesn't try to focus in the macro range then the auto focus performs much better. while the bokeh isn't exceptional, its not bad in my opinion, but not the best lens for portrait work. Build quality feels solid, super sharp, fairly light weight and compact, very reasonably priced compared to other native sony lenses that are not nearly as sharp, just wish the auto focus wasn't sub par compared to most lenses these days.
