Sony 50mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

A normal-length prime with close-focusing capabilities, the FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens from Sony offers an impressive 1:1 maximum magnification, along with a 6.3" minimum focusing distance, for making life-size imagery of close-up subjects. Useful controls, such as a top-printed distance and magnification scale, focus range limiter, and focus hold button, all benefit more precise focusing adjustments for refined results. Complementing the handling capabilities, the optical design also incorporates both an aspherical and an extra-low dispersion element, which work to suppress chromatic and spherical aberrations for increased clarity throughout the focus range. Additionally, the lens sports a dust- and moisture-resistant design to benefit working in inclement weather conditions.

Standard prime macro lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, and can also be used on APS-C models where it provides a 75mm equivalent focal length.
True macro design affords a life-size, 1:1 magnification ratio along with a 6.3" minimum focusing distance for working with close-up subjects. A focusing distance and magnification scale is also printed on the top of the lens to aid in more technical applications.
One extra-low dispersion element is featured in the lens design and helps to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color neutrality.
One aspherical element is incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
A focus range limiter switch allows you constrain the usable focus range between 6.3-11.8", 11.8"-infinity, or full, and a focus hold button is also featured to manually stop the autofocus at a specified point.
Dust- and moisture-sealed design better permits working in inclement conditions and rubberized control rings benefit handling in colder temperatures.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.

    Sony 50mm f/2.8 reviews

FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Depends on your camera When I was using the a7r2, I purchased this lens because it’s my favorite focal length and I can shoot food with it. Seemed like the perfect lens, until I realized how slow it actually is with the old af system. Returned within 2 days Fast forward a month ago, went into my local store to give it one more shot now that i have the r3 and the a9. Focuses very nicely in continuous. A little slow in single point But very usable overall. Made the purchase and couldn’t be happier using this as my daily. Keeps up very well with my daughter running around, and super sharp. TLDR get it if you use the third generation body with the updated af system.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sufficient for the job in hand. For a full-frame Macro lens, it does the job and does it well. For anything else, it lacks. The autofocus is one of the worst I have ever used- slow and inaccurate- and found that I had no choice but to focus manually, whether for macro work or standard 50mm photography. AF-aside, great little lens that has good all-round potential. Feels like a flimsy bit of plastic to handle (it is) but the positive with that is that when combined with the Sony A7r ii, it's light weight and compact size really does make it a nifty-fifty and a good travel companion. Just be sure to never use the autofocus if you want any moving subjecs to be sharp!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The price vs. performance of this lens makes it a must have. I'm primarily a street photographer shooting architecture and people using rangefinder cameras. I recently decided to get into close up photography and chose to use a Sony Alpha 7 ii with the FE 50mm f/2.8 Macro Lens. I was a little apprehensive about the focusing accuracy I could achieve with this lens but I am very pleased with the results so far. It has produced natural looking images without distortion. Other characteristics I like about it are its small size, its lightweight and dust/moisture resistant which is important out in the field.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Took it diving, because why not I purchased this lens to have something highly flexible for underwater photography. While 50mm is a little on the high side for most UW shooting (you tend to want something less then 24mm) I was able to get some killer shots with this lens. The ability for it to shift to macro mode when I found something small then back to full range when I went back to distance shooting was amazing. The sharpness is incredible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Macro Lens Had the 90mm macro, and it was wonderful, but very large and heavy. Bought the 50mm and love it. Much easier to handle and the results are great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great all-purpose lens for macro shooters I'm a botanist with an interest in very small plants. When I'm out and about I want to carry a camera with a single lens capable of high quality macro photography that will also double as a standard lens for other types of shots. This lens paired with my a7R is perfect in these respects. The 50mm focal length makes it an all-rounder while it is also capable of extremely good macro shots. The resolution when used with the A7R is astounding, to the extent that I can produce pictures well beyond 1:1 by cropping 1:1 or larger shots, benefiting from greater depth of field in the process. A 1/4 crop of a full-frame shot taken at iso 100 or 200 with a tripod is quite capable of being blown up to make a high quality image. The less-than-lighting-fast auto-focus doesn't bother me, it's more than adequate for normal still photography and of course I use manual focus for the macro shots. This lens is now almost permanently attached to my camera and I've sold my Sony/Zeiss 55mm 1.8. While I'm sure that lens has the edge wide open and for action shots, for the sort of photography I do the 50mm macro ticks all of the boxes. I couldn't tell the difference in resolution at f8 when I compared images from these lenses.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lightweight and sharp, but very slow to focus As others have said, the major downside to this lens is AF is very slow, and MF requires way too many turns of the dial. I have put the lens through the paces this week and I am still trying to get used to the slow focus. That said, the lens is lightweight and quite sharp. I have not done any special tests, but shots in the field of wildflowers and insects are very nice with all details present and crisp, even in enlargements.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everything I had Hoped for! This lens is wonderful! I was hesitant to buy it at first. I have a 50mm lens, but it's manual focus only. With my eyesight getting worse, I was starting to have problems with my images not being as sharp as I would have liked. This lens has worked beautifully! It's compact, light weight, and my images are so sharp! The only flaw I have found with it is when I photograph my very white kitten. She is 100% white with pink ears and nose, and very light greenish-yellow eyes. When set to macro, the AF really struggles and just keeps making noise (which freaks the kitten out). This also happens every time you move the camera. Not just when you push the shutter release down half way to focus - it tries to focus every single time you move when set to macro. But I can live with that one flaw for how beautiful a job it does everywhere else. Two thumbs up for this lens!
