Sony FDR-X3000 overview

  • 1Description

Incorporating optical image stabilization and 4K recording, Sony's FDR-X3000 Action Camera produces sharp videos and still images with reduced motion artifacts from vibrations and other camera movement. The ultra-wide-angle lens opens up versatile framing options for recording your adventures, and the included underwater housing is watertight to 197', letting you plumb aquatic depths right out of the box. For those that want precise control over framing, Sony's Live-View Remote is included. The LCD screen provides confidence monitoring as well as remote camera control.

4K (3840 x 2160) Recording
Using the XAVC S codec, the FDR-X3000 can record UltraHD resolution 4K (3840 x 2160) at 30p or 24p with bit-rates of 100 Mb/s or 60 Mb/s. Besides 4K, it can record Full HD 1080p at 50 Mb/s in XAVC S and up to 28 Mb/s in the higher-compressed MP4 mode
High-Frame-Rate Recording
Great for dramatic portrayal of action scenes, in 1080p and 720p resolutions, the FDR-X3000 is capable of recording high-frame-rate videos. Full HD 1080p video can be recorded up to 120fps, which offers a 1/4-speed playback at a smooth 30fps. Step down to 720p resolution for 240fps recordings for 1/4-speed playback at 60fps, or 1/8-speed playback at 30fps.
Built-In Balanced Optical SteadyShot
Originally formulated for Sony's HandyCam line, Balanced Optical SteadyShot (or B.O.S.S., for short) doesn't compromise on the camera's full recording capabilities. The lens itself moves to compensate for excess vibration in a shot, reducing motion artifacts and enabling smoother, sharper videos.
Live-View Remote
The included compact RM-LVR3 Live-View Remote acts an extension of the camera itself. The user interface is mirrored on the display, so all camera controls, including start/stop and power on/off. While it can be wrist-worn like a watch, the Live-View Remote is also compatible with the separately available Finger Grip, Shooting Grip, and Handlebar Mount accessories for even more placement options.
Wi-Fi for Remote Monitoring and Operation
With the PlayMemories Mobile (PMM) app, you can remotely control up to five Action Cams from a single mobile device. The app allows you to view a live feed from the camera, and the multi-view features means you can view up to five cameras at once, or just select one and view it in full screen.

Controls available through the app include:

  • Simultaneous shutter release
  • Simultaneous recording start/stop
  • Individual monitoring and setting
  • Individual shutter release
  • Individual recording start/stop
  • Movie/still mode switching
  • Changing exposure settings
  • Start/stop time-lapse recording
  • Play back and delete recorded clips
Highlight Movie Maker
So that you don't have to spend time editing, the Highlight Movie Maker automatically picks out what it deems to be the best moments, returning a self-contained MP4 movie for easy sharing and upload. The Highlight Movie Maker algorithm uses data from the gyro, scene color, smile detection, and other settings to identify the best moments in all of the footage you have amassed. You can even upload music from your computer to the Action Cam to add a custom sound track
Stereo Microphone
Unlike many action cameras, which have mono microphones, the FDR-X3000 features a built-in stereo mic to help make audio as immersive as the picture.
Simple User Interface
Selecting and changing features is a simple process with the simple and intuitive user interface. All menus are easily accessible on the integrated LCD screen. The camera can also be controlled as well as turned on or off via smartphone with the PlayMemories Mobile app.

    Sony FDR-X3000 reviews

FDR-X3000 Action Camera with Live-View Remote is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 87.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply the best! I launch an interview show that is done in a car. The first episode we shot with GoPro and then someone recommended Sony FDR-X3000 and wow what a difference. Here is why we love this camera so much: - picture quality - 4k Looks incredible - image stabilization - when driving there is a lot of shaking and with this camera, you can't even see it. - How easy it is to change the battery - The fact that you can use an external mic These just a few things we love. It shows that some brands are better at marketing (like GoPro) but are not the best. Buy this camera with confidence - you will not regret it. We own three of them :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Switched from GoPro and couldn't be happier I decided to switch from GoPro Hero 4 Black to the Sony FDR-X3000 and the difference in sharpness, contrast, distortion and sound is very noticeable. Optical stabilization is unparalleled (GoPro doesn't even have optical stabilization). Remote response is faster than with GoPro. Ability to zoom in/out. And the actual cool look factor, the Sony just looks much better and professional. I could keep going, but you get the idea. I mainly use it to record sport events of my daughter, but also use it when biking. It is the best action can outthere in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Full Featured Action Cam Overall, I am very happy with this little camera. The image stabilization is very good as is the image quality. I like the ability to switch between three lens shooting angles. (I find the wide angle to be a bit too wide.) The settings are easy to use, much better than my old GoPro. The time-lapse feature is simple and gives decent results, although not as good as my regular camera. I bought the camera for an upcoming snorkeling trip, so I haven't used it underwater yet. So, at least for dry land shooting, on a car, a bicycle and shooting handheld, I am quite pleased with the camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Camera Former GoPro Hero 4 Black. Liked the GoPro enough but decided to switch to try out the BOSS feature of the Sony. Balance Optical SteadShot is fantastic. It's about 70% as good as a gimbal. Image quality is slightly better with the Sony. I liked the GoPro for its form factor, manual control for aperture and ISO, and in-camera timelapse. There is no nightlapse for Sony either. Ultimately, the slightly better image quality and fantastic optical stabilization, and slightly better battery life made the switch to Sony worthwhile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sony took over the Action Cam market with Sony FDRx3000r! I can't say enough on this camera. I am totally hooked. So long to the GoPro era. So y has taken over. With its stabilization hardware and software (also available in 4k), excellent image quality, separate lcd display/remote to operate the unit from a distance if needed and the sleak ergonomic design, just to name a few. I've own GoPro cams from 1 to 4 and none compare (5 being exactly the same as 4 but with a few more features), none compare or hold water to the Sony FDR-X3000. I highlu recommend this camera over any other action cam.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I think this is the best action cam on the market now This little thing is amazing. I bought it mainly because of 4K (there are other options) and for Sony's Balanced Optical Image Stabilizer (BOSS). I'm really happy with this camera. The 4K footage is absolutely stunning and the BOSS is a game changer. It stabilizes so well, there is just a tiny movement when I walk over a rough surface like gravel, it's almost unbelievable. That feature alone puts Sony way ahead of it's competitors and there is no way I'm going back to a regular Action Cam after using this one. It's expensive, but if you can afford it, just buy it. You'll be a happy camper.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic action cam This camera is excellent. For the last 5 years I've been a huge fanboy of GoPro. Their form factor and specs were the best on the market, at the time. I used the newer Sony handcams when they introduced BOSS (balanced optical steady shot). Now that there's an action cam with BOSS, I'll never go back to GoPro as my main camera (back up, maybe). This little camera is remarkable. I don't know how Sony did it, but they packed the floating lens into this tiny package. For anyone interested, it appears that the Medium FOV on this camera is about 23mm equivalent (full frame sensor).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The late (getting into the states) and great Sony FDR X-3000 Recently I sold my old stabilized rig (Canon 60D & Blackbird) and decided to invest in a smaller, lighter, cheaper, and better solution. After searching the web for the best camera-gimbal combo I came to the conclusion of using the Sony X-3000 and the Feiyu Tech G4 GS gimbal (which I also purchased here at B&H). With the X-3000's BOSS, up to 4K image quality, remote viewing (via the Live-View Remote) decent lo-light, 3 different viewing angles and digital zoom, it was a no-brainer. Add the extra smoothness from a 3 axis gimbal and it starts to get exciting. I was so impressed with this combo that after reading that the remote could handle up to 5 cameras at a time I decided to order the less expensive, still stabilized Sony HDR AS50 (no 4K). I've attached pictures of my somewhat diy kit using a pelican style case to tie everything together.
