Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 overview

  • 1Description

With Ultra HD 4K resolution video at 30 fps, 3-axis video stabilization, voice control, GPS capture, 12MP photos with up to 60 fps burst frames, high-sensitivity mic, color touchscreen, live streaming to YouTube, 130' waterproof case, and easy-to-use one-touch operation, the VIRB Ultra 30 from Garmin is a cutting-edge action camera suitable for up to the most professional applications, and it's sleek and stylish to boot. Other video recording resolutions include 1080p at up to 120 fps and 720p at up to 240 fps.

Attach it to one of the many available support accessories, and command it what to do hands-free, such as "start recording" or "take a picture," or "remember that" to tag footage for later recall, and capture all your adventures. You can set your videos to automatically get stabilized in-camera using built-in electronic gyroscope stabilization, so that you don't have to apply stabilization in post-production to get smoother footage. And the built-in sensitive mic ensures that sound is recorded clear and not muffled -- and this is so whether the camera is in or out of the waterproof case. (Stabilization is applicable in Full HD 1080p60 resolution only.)

When you're setting up the camera, assigning desired frames rates and other factors, you'll find the touchscreen LCD very effective. For one thing, it works through the waterproof case, and second, it offers selections in large enough buttons that you'll find it very efficient to use.

When you're up there on that mountain, and want to document the height you reached, or how far you went, or how fast, just hit the GPS feature and the camera will take note of everything, of all the relevant performance data, which you can later use as proof. You can even overlay graphs and gauges over this data. Pair the VIRB Ultra 30 with the appropriate Garmin heart-rate monitor and you can even document your heart rate up on that mountain.

You also get a free VIRB Mobile App for iOS and Android that will let you control the camera remotely, set up shots, control multiple cameras, edit footage, and share your recordings in various ways, including live streaming to YouTube.

Included with the camera is a waterproof case, flat and curved adhesive mounts for attaching the camera to pretty much anything, standard 3-prong mount, and other accessories. Using the included battery, the camera runs for up to 75 minutes when recording 4K at 30 fps, and up to 135 minutes when recording 1080p30. It records everything to up to 128GB microSD cards.

    Garmin VIRB Ultra 30 reviews

VIRB Ultra 30 Action Camera is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacing my GoPro cams... I am the Equipment Manager at a Video Production company, we have 25 Gopro cameras but the quality of Gopro has went downhill in my opinion. The Gopro 3+ had focus issues and the Gopro 4 had several problems ranging from overheating to strange lines in the video. I have had this camera for a couple weeks now and have been very pleased with it. Quality is not different than GoPro and it uses the same mounts so I can interchange it with my existing accessories. Also.. The Gopro 5 does not run off of AC, that was a disastrous move for Gorpo, we have to be able to run the cameras on AC to get time-lapse video and to avoid changing batteries every 1.5 hours.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Camera Great camera - easy to use with excellent video and very good battery life. Still waiting for the external microphone cable. Would be nice if it supported Blu Tooth audio though that might impact battery life. Editing software is pretty good - online how to videos a big help. Very cool that you can merge metrics (GPS data, sensor data) into final video. Smart move for them to adopt GoPro style mounts as that gives you access to a wide range of existing accessories. Be sure to get the cage if not using underwater. We are mounting to motorcycle helmets and it was relatively easy to turn on/off when mounted in the cage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent camera! Recommended for action and motor sports! I did a lot of studying between the Ultra 30 and the Hero5 Black. While the Virb is not waterproof without the case, I felt the ability to do 240fps on slow motion and overlay speed, altitude, etc, without additional components made this the choice for me. While I haven't used it a lot, I can say that I'm impressed with it overall, and with my outdoor adventures, the ability to show speed and altitude will come in very handy. For anyone who is into motorsports or aviation, this is the camera for you!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect, but a big problem for use on a motorcycle I replaced my GoPro cameras with a Virb Ultra 30 and I love nearly all of it. The G-Metric overlays are great. The VirbEdit program is not impressive, but it works. I just use VirbEdit to create the overlays, and then use another more capable video editor to actually edit. The big problem is that the camera can rattle inside the waterproof case when mounted on my helmet while I ride my dirt bike. The causes a near constant "pop" sound every time I hit a rock. And I hit a lot of rocks. Without the waterproof case, there is no noise, but also no protection from dust or water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Effective user interface. I have typically used a GoPro for to video my flight training for students. I have been disappointed by failures in the remote / cell phone interface. I have only taken a couple of flights testing the Virb but they have been successful. The video is high quality and the user interface very effective.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great image quality, GPS overlays are great I bought this on April 10, 2017 and have used it to record rides on my dirt bike motorcycle as I ride through coal mine country. I upgraded from a GoPro Hero 3+. The image quality is much better, the image stabilization works great even as I race over rocks and roots. The GPS (G-Metrix) information overlays on the video are useful and can be customised. This is a huge upgrade from my GoPro. And I can use all of my mounting brackets, tripod mounts that I bought for the GoPro with this Garmin

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great features, poor execution Very promising product with a lot of features, G-Metrix, image stabilization at high resolutions, advanced settings. Unfortunately it doesn't live up to the hype. *Videos recorded at 2.7K are unplayable with third party programs and cannot be played or edited in Virb Edit *Image stabilization is unsuitable for automotive use (which is one of it's intended purposes) as the image shifts side to side during hard cornering. *Glitchy video settings, at some high frame rates Wide and Ultra Zoom (2x) are available, but no Zoom 1.5x. Given that the features which should be selling points versus competitive product don't work very well, if at all, you should consider buying the tried and true competitive product instead....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent sports cam with features above the competition. I bought the Garmin VIRB Utra 30 camera to use for use in car track days and autocrosses as well as on bicycle tours and when kayaking. I compared to the GoPro latest models and the Garmin has more built in features and I have always had good luck with Garmin GPS products. The videos come out sharp and contrasty. I am a retired professional photographer and I was expecting the lens to be just adequate...but not so as evidenced by the great video and photos. I appreciate the voice control as it is harder to push buttons when you have gloves on. The free software for editing and remote control works very well and in particular the remote program run from my tablet allows for setting of controls and seeing the video at a large size. The waterproof case is appreciated for extra protection when not exposed to water but to dirt and rough trips when biking too. I like that you can get into a mode where you can set long exposure times which I have done for astronomy time lapse photos. The 1.5x and 2x settings are handy for a tele effect and I am happy that the touch screen works even through the water proof case. The tiny monitor is surprisingly good which was unexpected. And the mike works very well....EVEN when in the waterproof case. Note that when in HD mode higher than 1024 you loose the ability to auto stabilize and correct lens edge distortion but that is fine as in most cases the 1024/60 setting is ideal. I do recommend that you turn on the lens edge distortion correction as otherwise you tend to get barrel distortion of the images. Since it uses the same connection as GoPros there are lots of accessories to mount the camera just about anyplace you can imagine although Garmin also has very nice mounts also. Only con for me is I wish the camera itself had a 1/4x20 tripod screw so I can mount it directly without the water proof case on a tripod. I have always had great product support from Garmin over the years and that was a big factor in my choice.
