Carson IS-200 Overview

Use the HookUpz 2.0 Universal Adapter from Carson Optics to attach your smartphone to your binocular, spotting scope, telescope, or microscope and record still images or videos.

The HookUpz 2.0 securely attaches any phone up to 3.75" wide to any 25mm to 58mm optical eyepiece using a powerful, patented dual-spring clamp. A generous-sized knob operates the screw mechanism that smoothly and precisely aligns the phone's camera with the eyepiece. A locking cam further secures the phone in place. The screw mechanism also makes it easy to switch between camera-in-the-corner and center-camera phones.

The adapter is designed not to interfere with your phone's side buttons. Its foam clamp pieces and handles glow in the dark, making it easier to operate in low-light situations such as digiscoping the night sky.

The HookUpz 2.0 measures 4 x 1.75 x 4.5", weighs 4.4 oz, and comes with a hard foam carrying case.

  • Fits phones up to 3.75" wide
  • Compatible with optical eyepieces with 25mm to 58mm outer edges
  • Clamps tightly to binocular, spotting scope, telescope, or microscope
  • Precisely align camera lens with the optic's eyepiece using the screw mechanism
  • Glow-in-the-dark pieces for ease of use in low-light situations
  • Lightweight, compact, & comes with a hard foam carry case

Disappointed

The sales person said this was universal and would work with my Motorola cell phone. Well, it does fit within the clamps but barely and isn't stable. Pretty much not usable with this particular phone.

Does not fit 2in eyepieces. Unable to hold my phone in place on 1.25in eyepiece - phone tilts under weight. Translating causes phone to tilt. I dont recommend it.

I've been looking for something easy to connect my phone to various optics, my Celestron 100 spotting scope and an old microscope, and I hope this will do the job. Have not tried it at night yet. The connection is not 100% consistent from each mounting, So moving the scope by eye, then putting the camera back on may not get you dead center again. Its a little chunky overall, but seems to work with my Pixel (top corner lens) much better than my older HTC with a centered lens. the top hold down misses the camera on the HTC

Does what it is supposed to do.

It takes good pictures with your IPhone. It was a little difficult to initially learn how to mount your IPhone in the device and orient the IPhone camera. Once you learn to do this, it works really well.

Just not great.

I understand that anytime you are trying to attach a camera to a piece of glass it wasn't intended for is tricky. Problem being this just doesn't work well enough to use, at least with an iPhone 10. Plastic is too flexible, standoff from the optics too far, terrible light leakage, insecure attachment, etc., I have subsequently ordered metal adapters for my DSLRs and hope they work better.

I've been playing around with this adapter with my binoculars (Leupold 10x42) as well as my Hawke spotting scope and have found the adapter to be pretty unstable especially if I leave the eye cup on (not something I really want to be constantly taking on and off). My phone is not entirely stable in the adapter and if bumped slightly requires readjustment, which prevents me from focusing with my phone or panning easily.

Works, to a point

The construction was a ice idea but the execution lacks stability. The material is too wobbly to warrant a firm positioning of the cell phone in the unit, and the unit on the binoculars. It wiggles and wobbles, and can't take any movement without readjusting. The holding clip on top is useless because it can't stabilize the phone in the unit, especially if the phone is in a protective case like an Otterbox. I wish someone would build a proper holder from metal. I have tried several products, but they are all to flimsy - even with an aluminum construction, the set screws are often made from the cheapest plastic. So while this construction is based on an interesting engineering, it is too expensive for what it can deliver.

Can't get it to work

I have an iPhone XS Max, and I was trying to use this with a pair of binoculars and with a spotting scope. In the case of the binoculars - the phone was too heavy for the Hookupz. Similar problem with the spotting scope, but could be handled when the spotting scope is on a tripod. It can't get the camera close enough to the eyepiece without a lot of extraneous light seeping in. It is essentially useless for me.
