Carson IS-200 overview

  • 1Description

Use the HookUpz 2.0 Universal Adapter from Carson Optics to attach your smartphone to your binocular, spotting scope, telescope, or microscope and record still images or videos.

The HookUpz 2.0 securely attaches any phone up to 3.75" wide to any 25mm to 58mm optical eyepiece using a powerful, patented dual-spring clamp. A generous-sized knob operates the screw mechanism that smoothly and precisely aligns the phone's camera with the eyepiece. A locking cam further secures the phone in place. The screw mechanism also makes it easy to switch between camera-in-the-corner iPhones and center-camera Android phones, and the HookUpz 2.0 is compatible with the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X. Note: the HookUpz is not compatible with tablets or riflescopes.

The adapter is designed not to interfere with your phone's side buttons. Its foam clamp pieces and handles glow in the dark, making it easier to operate in low-light situations such as digiscoping the night sky.

The HookUpz 2.0 measures 4 x 1.75 x 4.5", weighs 4.4 oz, and comes with a hard foam carrying case.

  • Fits phones up to 3.75" wide, including iPhone 8, 8 Plus, X
  • Compatible with optical eyepieces with 25mm to 58mm outer edges
  • Clamps tightly to binocular, spotting scope, telescope, or microscope
  • Precisely align camera lens with the optic's eyepiece using the screw mechanism
  • Glow-in-the-dark pieces for ease of use in low-light situations
  • Lightweight, compact, & comes with a hard foam carry case

    Carson IS-200 reviews

HookUpz 2.0 Universal Optics Adapter for Smartphones is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 28.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Difficult fit for Swarovski ATX/STX ocular module! Potential buyers beware that if you have any of the above scope combinations, the maximum 58mm width is a difficult and very fiddly stretch. The mechanism rubs against the scope-body (and prevents it fitting at all if you have the camera digiscope attachment already fitted). Orienting the phone whilst setting the correct eye-relief is also troublesome because of the tight fit. While I am sure this device will work for many scopes (and binoculars), I was looking for a snap-on, focus and shoot solution for quickly recording bird-sightings. The Carson HookUpz 2.0 Universal Optics Adapter for Smartphones does not do that for me, and I will be looking at other solutions.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent for star parties A very good product, allows quick installation and changing of smartphones. Very useful for public star parties. The grip on the eyepiece should be stronger though. With my iPhone 7 the lens is not 100% at right angle to the eyepiece. I've included a photo of the Moon after stacking a few shots in Registax. Taken with Pentax 105mm apo refractor and a zoom eyepiece set at 8mm.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Universal? Yes it is. I used the HookUpz 2.0 in Flagstaff where I was a telescope host for their 4th annual Flagstaff Star Party. I offered attendants a picture of the Moon through my 17.5 Dobsonian scope stopped down to a 6 size with longer f ratio for better clarity. The adapter worked great. I had many different size and makes of phones to attach to, and I also tried several different eye pieces, and it fit every time and everyone got several great shots of the Moon at 200X! People were so enthusiastic and thankful. This is a winner.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from too sloppy to be really useful for me I have a similar experience to the reviewer with Swarovski scope. I want to fit my iphone6 to a Kowa spotting scope with 58mm eyepiece and it is too tight a fit. By the time you wiggle it on everything has moved out of alignment and you need to readjust them again. You only need to bump it and it is out of alignment again. Or take the phone off the holder and back will change alignment. If you have plenty of time to set up and a static target then it seems OK, but the birds have gone by the time it is ready.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for telescopes, the rest is great Works very well with binoculars and spotting scopes, but not telescopes. The clamps (springs) are not strong enough to keep it parallel nor in landscape orientation on a 1.25 inch barrel eyepiece. The 2 inch eyepieces were very snug but still had the same issues. This is probably because, unlike spotting scopes, telescopes are rarely anywhere near horizontal. The top clamp is also useless on center cameras such as Samsung models. If the clamp had been designed a 1/2 inward it would work on edge cameras (iPhones) and Samsungs.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works, but could be better I use with with an iPhone 6s for limited astrophotography (moon, planets, etc.). It does work, but you will need a remote app to trigger the iPhone to ensure there are no vibrations. Spring-loaded clamps are a bit tricky to use to center the iPhone camera lens in the adapter's opening -- some type of screw thread to move the iPhone in place would be better. Spring-loaded clamps are also use to hold the adapter and iPhone against the eyepiece, and are easy to dislodge. Still, with care, you can get good photos.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good universal smartphone adaptor. Product arrived in original packaging. Product is a little bulky but sturdy. You may have to remove the phone from any protective sleeve to make it fit in the device. The platform can be adjusted to the left or right to position with the lens on the smartphone.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from It simply doesnt work Good idea, very poorly executed. The clamps do not hold a Samsung S7 Edge tightly enough, the alignment of phone camera and binocular is very tenuous, using it on the fly is impossible, and even on a tripod the slightest movement causes the whole apparatus to require readjustment. Total waste of money. Too bad I lugged it to Africa.
