AKG C411 PP Reviews

Superior to acoustic guitar pickups, but no replacement for a "real" mic

Weirdly, the majority of reviews here are from people who are using this for "field recording". I'm not completely sure what that means. Do they put this thing on rocks and tree branches to listen to the fascinating sounds of stone and wood? I like this for a slightly more elaborate version of a tree, in the form of fine acoustic instruments. In live applications, it can replace one of those piezo pickups, and usually gives much better results. The frequency spectrum is wider, and the response is more natural, less pronounced on the attack. However, in comparison with an actual condenser or even dynamic mic, it lacks the ability to pick up "air". It accurately reproduces the resonance of the instrument, however for a truly natural sound, you need overtones and sympathetic resonance with occur at a slight distance from the instrument's body. Hence, the C411 excels in combination with a "real" microphone, where it can deliver the necessary volume, while the mic adds those air frequencies, a small portion of which is enough to make the overall result sound natural. It never sounds quacky or zingy, like those under saddle transducers. Make sure to hold on to that all important adhesive, since it's the only kind that can be removed without residue, and is almost impossible to come by. The cable is very thin, but has held up well over the years for me. Phantom power required! As a fun experiment, I have put it on the headstock of a bass guitar, which, blended with the humbucker pickups, yielded a pretty convincing double bass impersonation.
