Sony FDR-AS300 overview

  • 1Description

The HDR-AS300 Action Camera from Sony uses optical (rather than digital) stabilization to capture smooth, full HD, live streamable video. This NTSC/PAL–switchable camera features up to 1080p60/50 capture in both XAVC S and MPEG4-AVC formats. High-speed recording for slow-motion playback is available in 120 fps and 240 fps (100/200 in PAL). The MPK-UWH1 housing is waterproof to a depth of 197' and protects against dust and dirt out of water.

The HDR-AS300 HD Action Cam can also record 12MP still photos, 4K time-lapse images, single-frame composite images, video loop-recording, and photo bursts of up to 10 frames. Other features that maximize your adventure-capturing include a built-in microphone, GPS tagging, select smartphone remote-control, an underwater scene mode, multiple-camera control, and a dual memory-stick/microSD card slot. The HDR-AS300 can record audio using its internal microphone or via the stereo mini-jack mic input.

The optional Sony PlayMemories Mobile app offers Wi-Fi remote camera control, and JPEG/MP4 image transfers for select smartphones (functions differ according to smartphone model). Multi-camera control is available using the RM-LVR3 or the PlayMemories Mobile app remote control.

Remote Control
The RM-LVR3 Live-View remote controller is available separately (not included). Remote control of the camera is also available through select smartphones using the optional Sony PlayMemories Mobile app.
Optical Image Stabilization
The camera's SteadyShot function - available for both video and still capture, is an optical-stabilization system, improving upon prior models' digital image stabilization.
Camera Housing
The included camera housing is waterproof to a depth of 197' and enables you to maintain control of all the camera settings.
Video Formats/Resolutions
Video can be recorded in both XAVC S and MPEG4-AVC/H.264 formats with high, standard, and lower–resolution options. Resolutions range from a high of 1080p60 down to 720p30 (useful when extended recording times are a priority).
Slow Motion Video
Capture action details in slow motion video at 120 fps in 720p or 240 fps in 480p.
Lens Features
The HDR-AS300 features an ultra-wide 2.6mm f/2.8 lens with a 35mm-equivalent focal length of 17mm. The camera also has different video modes that allow for an adjustable field-of-view with wide, medium, and narrow settings. The lens' 20" minimum focus distance lets you get close up to your subjects.
Live Streaming
Share your adventures via live streaming using the Ustream platform (not included).
Still Photos / Composite Images
Capture 12MP 16:9 format photos, shoot bursts of 2, 5, or 10 fps, or highlight an action sequence in a single composite frame created from a still burst.
4K Time-Lapse Recording
The time-lapse mode captures 4K still images from which you can create time-lapse movies using Action Cam Movie Creator or Action Cam App v.2.0 (optional applications).
Video Loop Recording
Loop recording (overwriting) enables you to record continuously, or in 5, 20, 60, or 120–minute lengths. This option is designed to capture the "big moment" without wasting large amounts of recording memory.
Additional Features
Automatic and manual white-balance and color options, AE (auto-exposure)-shifting, a built-in mic and speaker, self-timer, and GPS-logging are some of the additional camera features designed for optimal image capturing.

Sony FDR-AS300 reviews

HDR-AS300 Action Camera is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from No fisheye in 4k... amazing! First impressions: 170degrees Wide with no fish eye? Completely amazing. Everything looks straight. Differences with previous model: FDR-X1000v 4k - side door battery loading instead of back panel. (dislike) - micro sd card loads on bottom and not back panel Things that remain the same: - Sony still allows micro sd card to be inserted backwards and still does not block this like other cameras do. - Can still insert the card crooked and it locks in, but not detected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect 1080p 60fps Camera I needed a camera for recording while on my motorcycle. I first ordered the model below this, the AS200V. The image stabilization and audio with wind was not good enough for a modern camera (in my eyes anyway). I exchanged it for this AS300 and I'm 100% satisfied. Nearly every measurable thing about this camera is a step up from the AS200V -- the interface, video quality, low light performance, sound quality, button layout, IO locations, and image stabilization which is a huge step up. The only thing that is not better is the battery life; that is about the same, which is not surprising since they use the same model battery. I love this camera and if you don't need 4k resolution, I think you would to.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from URGENT minor improvement ~ Brilliant I am amazed. Compared to the Contour and Go Pro. have both. the Sony wins without question' Brilliant and simple to use Quality of photos and pictures are very impressive The WATER proof case is well designed the major flaws 1) cannot side mount on helmets 2) Cannot rotate the camera access. Side Helmet mounting is a necessity for my life style. Hiking, motorcycle riding, mountaineering etc. Action filled if side helmet was introduced this camera would be the rolls Royce

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I recomend this camera Excelent camera and setup is easier as my previous HDR-AS100V camera. My only complaint is not with the camera itself but with the shipping (in my particular case because I live in Chile and it was send via DHL). Shipping was fast and superb tracking, BUT DHL's handling Fees (apart from shipping, I had to pay locally) is far to high ($250 for the camera, $37 for shipping and locally $135 for handling). I accept Custom Fees but not these excesive handling fees.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product for the price. I have the AS30 and enjoy it a lot. Do not need 4K so I upgraded to the AS300. Love the fact that it does up to 197 ft instead of 16 like the AS30.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing camera - Would be great to choose in black finish Amazing little camera! Great to literally walk around holding it on a tiny tripod. I prefer this version because I don't need 4k for my personal memories, Full-HD is enough and 4k drains a lot of power, could overheat and 4k files are too big. Great to see how well i can walk and have a kind of a fluid film using ACTIVE stabilizer mode. It's not so stable as a professional steadycam but it's WAY better then other cameras without stabilization. Also Standard Stabilizer mode is good but for a walk the active mode is the best. Active mode is a little croped than standard or off stabilizer mode, but consider that the lens is VEEERY Wide, seems like maybe 15 or 16mm equivalent on a fullframe on the Widest mode, the Medium mode seems like 20mm, and narrow looks for me like 28mm on my quick test. Mic is good but a little loud, seems better using a rode smartlav+ and the minifur windshield (deadcat) around my mini-tripod. Consider that the internal mic doesn't have an input level, so it's not so good to use it on very loud places, or you will need a separate audio recorder to manage higher levels. For photos does a very good job considering the small sensor size, even on dim lights. On the widest angle it has bigger than 4k resolution (4624x2600) but on medium and narrow it is smaller (3280x1848 and 2304x1296). Ok for me. Bottom line, the App for smartphones works perfect, very quick to recognize the camera, and great to use your phone as a viewfinder for both photos or videos, and also to change settings if you want. I'm considering buying a second one and I really wish to have an option to buy it in all black instead of white.
