Tokina FiRIN 20mm f/2 MF Overview

  • 1Description

A wide-angle prime well-suited to multimedia applications, the FíRIN 20mm f/2 FE MF Lens from Tokina is dedicated to full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras. The ultra-wide perspective is benefitted by a sophisticated optical design, which incorporates three super-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements to control both chromatic and spherical aberrations. A multi-layer coating has also been applied to reduce lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and improved color fidelity. Its manual focus design affords precise control when working with subjects as close as 11", and the manual aperture ring can be de-clicked to enable smooth, silent aperture adjustments for cine use. Additionally, electronic contacts are integrated into the mount design to permit seamless communication of distance and aperture information to the camera body in order to support the use of focusing aids, in-camera image stabilization, and an EVF distance scale.

Wide-angle prime lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it provides a 30mm equivalent focal length.
The f/2 maximum aperture benefits working in difficult and low lighting conditions.
Three super-low dispersion elements help to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
Two all-glass precision molded aspherical elements suppress spherical aberrations to minimize distortion and improve overall sharpness.
Multi-layered coating helps to alleviate lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.
Manual focus design affords a minimum focusing distance of 11".
Manual aperture ring can be de-clicked to support smooth, quiet aperture adjustment for cine applications.
Internal contacts relay distance and aperture information to the camera body to enable full support of in-camera focusing aids.
Printed depth of field and distance scales are featured on the lens barrel for pre-focusing and hyperfocal focusing techniques.
Nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

Tokina FiRIN 20mm f/2 MF Reviews

FiRIN 20mm f/2 FE MF Lens for Sony E is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens and high quality lens. Amazing lens. I was looking for a wide angle lens for architecture and landscape photography. I considered the Zeiss Loxia 21mm/f2.8 and Zeiss Batis 18mm/f2.8, both of these lens are at $1500, that is almost twice as expensive. After reading a few reviews of the Firin, I decided to buy it. And I am now quite happy with the Firin. It is very sharp with unnoticeable distortion and no corner vignette. Manual focusing is smooth, actually too smooth that sometime a slightly touch of the focusing ring causes the camera to activate focusing assistance. It is annoying but I get used to it now. I hope Tokina will produce more lens for the Sony A7

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice built but ..... Bought this lens for a month and very happy with the IQ and built quality.....nice job, Tokina. However, I had to complain the materials that used to build for this lens. The body is very easy to get scratch and those scratches are very significant. Understood the matte black finish is beautiful and eye catching, however, it seems not so scratch resistant. Just put together with my SONY 55 FE lens in my punch without any partition for separation, the Tokina got some scratches on the body but nothing on the SONY...... Hope Tokina can make changes to the materials in its next Firin lens...Sorry for my bad English.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tack Sharp wide angle lens I love it! The lens is well built. It is very sharp and has very minimal distortion for a wide angle lens. What sweetens the deal is the fact that it's a full manual lens so photography becomes more challenging on my Sony A7ii When I say the lens is well built. I mean well built with the exception of click mechanism which can unintentionally rotate the manual focus ring causing a headache when shooting in low light. Then there's the hood that won't allow the lens cap to come off unless you take the hood off. Overall, I am very pleased with the output.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Cannot understate this lens... performs beautifully optically, warm with nice color rendition, beautiful bokeh, sharp but not too sharp, and closed down gives a very great sun flare. I am in love with this lens for wide angle photography and cinematography. I really appreciate the lack of barrel distortion you would see with most other wide angles. I mean it has some but it's just the right amount for a wide of this quality. Manual focus is a charm and overall this is a fantastic buy you won't be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW WOW..again! Image quality that leaves one drooling. This lens is incredibly sharp from f2. I had to look at the exif data several times to check the aperture. The entire frame is tack sharp at f5.6-f8, however the central 90% of the frame is still tack sharp at f2..amazing glass. It controls contrast beautifully and renders an impressive image. The manual focus experience is exactly what it should be in a lens like this. 5 STARS ALL DAY LONG..Love it!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceptional lens, solid build, perfect for Sony a 7 Bought this beautiful lens with astrolandscape photography in mind. Out 6 times so far using it. At f2 and beyond, lens delivers results very very pleasing. I like the fact i can use a filter, 62 mm thread size, same as my sony 10-18 apsc lens.. Solid build and focuses manualy inside viewfinder unlike a Rokinon I guess? I shoot manual 95% of the time so this is a big plus, super easy to focus in the dark. Only other high end alternative to this lens is the 18 mm Zeiss Batis at almost double the price. Not many reviews online for this as it just came out. Utube has a good astrophotography review of this lens that i believe to be on the mark. $799 for an ecxeptional lens, smooth focus, solid f stop clicks at the front, very solid build, and on my Sony a7 m2 it feels totally solid.Like I have something meant for business! This summer taking astrolandscapes will be easy so much fun using this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for video Very nice build. Sharp edge to edge. Focus and Iris are smooth for video. I sold my 16 to 35mm f4 to get this. F2 is great and for video this is much better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens The Tokina FiRIN 20mm is a nice, sharp lens with a very wide field of view. As expected, there is a small, but noticeable amount of barrel distortion, especially at close focusing distances. There is a very small amount of vignetting; since I usually shoot around f8, the vignetting's not much of an issue. The lens is well made, compact, and surprisingly easy to use, considering I haven't done much manual focusing in years. It communicates very well with my A7 - better even than the Sony lenses I have. For me, the focal length is not ideal - too wide for some tasks, not wide enough for others - but that's not the lens's fault, it's just about what I photograph and how I do it. In my opinion, at the price, Tokina has hit a home run, and I really look forward to seeing what else they bring out in this series. Something around 32mm would be nice... (for me).
