It's a great lens hood, but it should have been included with the lens. These companies are really cheaping out, especially considering the cost increases thanks to the tariffs. If you have the RF 100-400 lens, then you will want this hood.

I recently purchased a Canon RF 100-400 f5.6-8 lens. Two questions: Is the Canon ET-74B Lens Hood the best choice for the 100-400 lens? Also, how does it attach to the lens (screw in threads or outside clamp mechanism)?

Yes the Canon ET-74B is the correct hood for the Canon 100-400mm RF lens. It uses a bayonet style attachment.

This hood does not screw-into the filter threads. So the filter thread dimension has no pertinent relationship to the hood. The hood fits over the entire front edge shell of the lens. With the hood in place filters can still be screwed into the threads on the front of the lens, although it is easier to screw in a filter before mounting the hood. It just so happens that the lens that uses this hood, the EF70-300 f/4-5.6 II IS USM, does take 67mm filters.
