Sigma 12-24mm f/4.0 overview

  • 1Description

Sigma's third generation 12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art Lens, available here with a Nikon F mount, refines their ultra-wide arena and delivers an image with little distortion and with a high resolution for crisp photos with a modern full-frame digital image sensor. A member of Sigma's Art series, it boasts high image quality which is helped out by the use of FLD and aspherical elements, including an 80mm large-diameter molded glasses aspherical lens, that minimizes aberrations and distortion. Furthermore, it uses a Super Multi-Layer coating that minimizes flare and ghosting.

Benefitting handling, the 12-24mm is equipped with a Hyper Sonic AF motor with an optimized algorithm for speed and accuracy. The lens also offers a large focusing ring with full-time manual override settings for quickly making adjustments. A rounded 9-blade diaphragm improves image quality by helping create smooth bokeh while the lens is constructed from a lightweight and durable thermally-stable composite. Also, the 12-24mm has a brass bayonet lens mount and is dust- and splash-proof. And, it is fully compatible with Sigma's USB Dock.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
This wide-angle 12-24mm f/4 zoom lens is designed for full-frame format Nikon F-mount cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 18-36mm equivalent focal length.
Constant f/4 maximum aperture provides consistent performance throughout the zoom range.
F Low Dispersion and aspherical elements, including an 80mm large-diameter molded glass aspherical element, have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting. This optical design also helps to control distortion and limit vignetting.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Minimum focus distance of 9.4" when shooting at 24mm for getting close to your subjects.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
Dust- and splash-proof construction with rubber sealing to protect the mount and a water- and oil-repellent coating on the front and rear elements.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

    Sigma 12-24mm f/4.0 reviews

12-24mm f/4 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Good Ultrawide Zoom I'll be using this lens mostly to photograph buildings. It does produce rectilinear images. It's solid in build, as one would expect from a Sigma Art lens. It's also big and heavy, as one would expect from a FF zoom that starts at 12mm. I already owned a number of zooms with 24mm focal lengths included, as well as a 24mm prime. So, I bought the lens to get the 12mm focal length. If you don't need 12mm, get a lighter, smaller lens. At 12mm, the lens is very good in terms of edge sharpness and distortion. If the lens was a little better at 12mm, I'd give it five stars instead of four.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens quality, distortion control is fantastic After doing a little bit of research on this lens and from other Art lens purchases I have made, I decided to purchase on of these for my Nikon D810. A nice clean build right out of the box. Typical Art lens quality on the outside. Immediately took it out for some landscape shooting and was very impressed. Truly a great piece of glass. Distortion is so well maintained along with sharpness corner to corner. Worked a lot of compositions at F/8 and have to say it holds up to and actually is better than my Nikon 14-24 in corner sharpness and distortion. Really pleased with my purchase of the lens and glad I didn't wait for the Photozone review on the lens which should confirm everything I have stated on my review here. A real contender in the wide angle zoom market!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best wide angle lens for Nikon! I have owned the Nikon 14-24mm, 18-35mm, 16-35mm and Tamron 15-30mm, this lens beats them all! It is very sharp at f4 to f10 at 12-18mm but then softens a bit from 18-24mm. Distortion, CA and vignetting are all controlled very well. The lens is well built and balances on my D810 nicely. This lens will blow you away when taking architectural interior shots at 12mm f4 most everything is straight and in focus and same goes for landscape photography, you wont be disappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Close-ups Also My intention is to use this lens for scenic closeups with backgrounds for perspective. I may also use it for scenics where I want to capture a lot of sky. So far, the in-field resolution at closeup distances is much better than I expected. A lot of lenses lose a lot of resolution close-up but this lens does not. This is a heavy lens but I don't know of any other lens capable to capturing these type of images, especially at 12mm. Can't wait to use it in Yosemite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wide & Sharp ! Lens is large & heavy but balances nicely on my Nikon D810. Build quality is at the same level as other Sigma Art Series lens which is to say outstanding. Lens hood is an integral part of the lens, no filter threads which is typical of most ultra wide lenses of this class. Lens includes a front cap to protect the very large front element. Unlike previous Art lenses this lens features an O-ring seal on the mounting flange. Both the focus and zoom rings rotate smooth as silk. At 12 mm the included angle is amazing with a minimum of distortion. Any distortion is easily corrected in Photoshop. Colors are rendered very accurately. Focus is quick and spot on. Its heavy, its large, its not cheap (but less expensive than both the Nikon & Canon equivalents) but the results you can get from this lens makes it worthwhile.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Lens This is a great lens. It is very sharp across the frame with great clarity and color accuracy. As can be expected of such a wide lens, the corner is a little soft. The image quality is superb, far better than that of Voigtlander 10mm or Voigtlander 12mm, but similar to Voigtlander 15mm; it is as good as the Canon EF 11-24mm f/4L USM if not better, although the price gap is huge. I was thinking of jumping ship from Nikon, but with the advent of this lens in Nikon mount, I can hang on in the Nikon boat a little longer. If I do jump, Ill bring my Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Predictable Optical Performance; AF Issues on my D810 & D850 This is my third A-series Sigma, and my second to experience inconsistent AF acquisition (24-35 f2 is the other). Not that this affects day-to-day use. This is not a lens for sports or other action subjects. For consistent AF, I've learned to defocus the lens manually and let it snap into focus with a double touch to the shutter release. Do that, and it will yield perfect focus; however, if the lens is near its focal point at the time of release, it fails to make micro adjustments and results in a throwaway image file. For optical performance, I recommend dxomark's lens database. Access the sharpness field maps. You will discover that this lens is sharpest at 12mm@f5.6. At the other end of the zoom range, 24mm has to be stopped down to at least f8 and preferably f11 to be usable. Live with these limitations and it's a fine performer, albeit an expensive way to gain a few millimeters at the wide end.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is a keeper! I have the 12-24 the one before this one and the Nikon 14-24...but i really like this one! Balance and Build are great! Distortion looks and feels like it is all in check...
