Sigma 85mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Sigma looked to create a peak portrait prime with the 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens, and they delivered an optic with high performance, a large f/1.4 aperture, and a variety of technologies. Available here with a Nikon F mount, this lens offers a super-fast f/1.4 aperture that is great for getting images with an exceptionally shallow depth of field and smooth bokeh. It also uses two SLD elements, one anomalous partial dispersion/high-refractive index element, and one aspherical element that minimize aberrations and ensures a crisp, clear image. A Super Multi-Layer coating helps by suppressing flare and ghosting.

For operation, a Hyper Sonic AF motor provides fast, accurate focusing and a large focusing ring permits manual focus override for making fine adjustments. A rounded 9-blade diaphragm also helps create round, smooth bokeh. It is made from a thermally-stable composite material that is light and durable and it has a brass bayonet mount. Additionally, it is fully compatible with Sigma's USB Dock.

As part of the Art line within Sigma's Global Vision series, this lens' is designed to achieve truly notable optical performance and is ideally suited for creative and artistic applications.
This short telephoto 85mm f/1.4 prime lens is designed for full-frame format Nikon F-mount cameras, and can also be used with APS-C models where it will provide a 127.5mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited for working in low-light conditions and also provides greater control over the focus position when using shallow depth of field techniques.
Two SLD elements, one element with a high rate of anomalous partial dispersion and a high index of refraction, and one aspherical element have been incorporated within the lens design to correct for chromatic aberrations throughout the entire focusing range and help to ensure high image sharpness, clarity, and contrast regardless of focus point or aperture setting. This optical design also helps to control distortion and limit vignetting.
A Super Multi-Layer Coating has been applied to lens elements in order to minimize lens flare and ghosting and contribute to producing contrast-rich and color-neutral imagery, even in backlit conditions.
The integrated HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) realizes quick and quiet autofocusing, which is further complemented by an optimized AF algorithm to produce smoother focusing performance. The HSM also permits full-time manual focus control simply by rotating the focus ring at any time.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm helps to produce an attractive out-of-focus quality.
The lens is constructed using a Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) material, along with traditional metals, for greater precision and use in wide temperature variations.
The bayonet mount is constructed from brass for ensured accuracy and durability.
This lens is compatible with the optional Sigma USB Dock for fine-tuning different lens characteristics and updating its firmware.

    Sigma 85mm f/1.4 reviews

85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 46.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Possibly Best Lens I've Ever UsedAnd I've Used Everything This lens has been perfect in almost every way. I had high expectations and it's exceeded them. I am a fashion photographer and I've owned the 85/1.4g from Nikon for years. I used to use it a lot on outdoor shoots, but I stopped after a while because the chromatic aberration was just too hard to deal with in post. I have to say, this has NOT been a problem with this lens. It's better than the Nikon in almost ever way, including focus. It hunts less. I received it perfectly calibrated and the sharpness is amazing. There is a small amount of CA wide open, but small and easily controlled in post. I'm a huge, huge fan of this lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Yes and Yes I needed a lens (prime) that would be my major workhorse for portraits. I have a few sigmas which I highly recommend like the 35mm ART. Not such a fan of the zooms. I had a few sigma zooms, not impressed with the sharpness, which is something to be expected but still. I tend to be a prime person. But it has one major weakness (thus the 4 start rating). Mine was front focusing quite a bit at all ranges. Luckily I had the Sigma USB dock and was able to fine tune it. With this lens finetuned, the sky is the limit. It quickly became one of my favorites of all and likely will fuse to my Nikon D750 body.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sigma 85 F1.4 I recently purchased this Sigma lens along with two others, the 20 1.4 and the 35 1.4. All three lenses front focused, the 20mm was so extreme, it could not be corrected within the +-20 range of my Nikon. It was replaced by Sigma. The other two lenses both required varying degrees of fine focus corrections with the Sigma USB Dock. Once you get them corrected they are very sharp, but for a lens in this price range I expected much better quality control - these lenses have significant variation in focus, it they are all calibrated at the factory to the same standard, one can only assume they don't hold their calibration and must be constantly tested. They should include the USB Dock at no cost as well as a focus target.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another Art Lens Winner I bought this after the long anticipated release and have not been disappointed. I own the 24 & 35mm art lenses and those have been stunning. The 85 has not disappointed. As with every ART lens there are reports of inconsistent AF but I have found all my ART lenses to be spot on. On my D810 it tends to hunt a little but on the new AF system on the D5 it locks on where I want it to everytime. Image quality has been as expected...f1.4 is excellent and by f2 & 2.8 it is stunning.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another home run! Lens came today and from what I can tell sigma has done it again. After reading these reviews I was a little worried about focus issues. My D750 shows no signs of front or back focus. It does seem to hunt a little in low light, but no more than my 35mm art. This thing is massive! It dwarfs my camera body. It is also a bit weird when mounting....may be the rubber seal, but it doesn't seem to lock in place as easily as most of my other lenses. Things I can live with for the image quality it is turning out. I'm not a pixel peeper so all that technical stuff goes out the window with me. Great subject isolation and beautiful bokeh that's what I wanted and definitely what I got. Can't wait for my next wedding to see this thing in action!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Beautiful But Needs Optimization When I first got the lens, I had to heavily adjust AF Fine Tuning on my D810 to get a sharper focus. However, I still wasn't happy with the focus. In the end, I bought a Sigma USB Dock and calibrated every segment of the lens. Now, it works beautifully and I'm actually excited to shoot with it. It's also a heavy lens. I'm looking into a tripod ring to see if I can offset the weight but no luck so far.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Nice bit sharper A+ This lens isn't for everyone. This Art Lens is Tack Sharp! I had the Nikon 85 1.4, and it was an outstanding Lens. Sharp! I sold it with a package deal with an older D800. Using this 85 Sigma with a D810 & a D5, I have to conclude that the images seem to be just a tad bit sharper. It is a heavy 85 1.4 lens, YES! However once you own a good copy? (I've never had a front focusing lens??)...with that said from a professional who shoots 30 + weddings a year, you will NOT be disappointed. Heavier, Yes! Sharper, can't seem to want to take it off and use my SHARP 105 1.4 Nikon Lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the wait This was my second art lens by sigma and was a needed focal length for me. I chose the art over the other versions and am glad I did for the detail it provides. I have not calibrated the lens and so far it is not showing front focus issues. So far I have been much happier with my sigma lenses over the Nikons for the price and will choose them to shoot on my D4s and D610 with confidence. It is a heavy beast though but a nicely built one.
