Zoom U-22 overview

  • 1Description

The U-22 from Zoom is a mobile USB 2.0 recording and performance interface, featuring two analog inputs and two analog outputs, in an ultra-portable housing that makes it easy to connect to a laptop or iPhone/iPad for on-the-go audio creation. A low-noise microphone preamp allows for recording vocals, instruments and more, with resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

The XLR/TS combo input can record a microphone or line-level source, and provides 48V phantom power and Hi-Z support for connecting a guitar or bass. A mini stereo input is also available for recording an iPad, mixer, or other portable audio device. Only one recording input can be used at a time. When using the line input, the XLR/TS combo input is disabled.

For zero-latency recording and mixing, a direct monitoring switch allows listening to the input signal before it passes through the computer. Separate RCA output jacks and an independent headphone output provide multiple options for monitoring.

    Zoom U-22 reviews

U-22 - USB Mobile Recording and Performance Interface is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Useful for cam ops, not audio engineers I am an audio engineer, with occasional cam op work. The cam op situation is very good for cam audio to computer conversion. It's limited for an audio application where quality of sound and control is paramount. This is a generic device with only RCA outputs. No XLR out. So the need for adaptors for audio situations needed. 1/8 TRS in is great for cams and even Phone outputs to convert. Gain controls and output function well. Battery operation is good, but no AC option. Only computer power. So make sure an adaptor is close for plugging into the wall. It's OK. It can with a device I bought as part of a package, so I can't complain. Though I would not have chosen this to purchase on my own. There a far better interfaces for the same price range.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Unsatisfactory performance, stay away ! 1-while unboxing you realize that no software is included (more to that below) and the U-22 feels light and flimsy. 2-PCs don't recognize the U-22 automatically, you have to download the drivers. It turns out that the drivers for Windows 7 64 bit don't work. Plus: Windows operating system and Norton security warn not to use the driver as it poses threats. I don't understand how Zoom distributes this product without checking its compatibility with software. So on my 64 bit computer I can't use the U-22 ! 3-I downloaded the Ableyton software and again Norton deleted the program because it caused a security risk. So, both the interface and the software are totally non-usable, it turns out I wasted my money ! 4-To check out if the U-22 works with a 32 bit computer, I borrowed one. Here again Norton warned not to install the drivers (due to security risk) but I took a risk and did install. With a Windows 7 home edition 32 bit computer the Zoom does work. I tested with Shure, AT, Sennheiser mics and guitar. Recording level is at adequate level only when gain and output are set to maximum, and then you get a background hiss. So to sum up: the device is definitely not for serious music work (if you get it to work that is). So do not buy !

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice XLR-USB interface with just the right controls The Zoom U-22 is a very good XLR-USB interface adapter with only two controls: input gain and output volume for headphones. The device is a bit bigger than I had expected but is still moderately compact. It supplies 48V phantom power, which can be switched off. It runs on batteries, an AC adapter (not included), or via the USB plug on a computer. Set up was fairly easy and straight forward. A mic XLR cable plugs into one end, and the USB cable goes in the other. The XLR plug was a rather tight fit, but I finally pushed it in, and it works fine. I could immediately monitor the mic through headphones plugged into the unit, but getting sound into my Audacity recording/editing program took a little troubleshooting. In Windows, make sure your setting in the control panel (under SOUND --> RECORDING) shows the mic/U-22, and make sure you set your audio recording program to recognize the set up. I am very impressed with the performance of my combination of a Rode NT1 with the U-22.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Pocket-Sized USB Interface Loaded With Features This single input interface accepts mike, line, and instrument inputs and outputs to USB, Line out and headphones. You can use it with your instrument or mic for stand-alone monitoring with headphones for practice. It supplys phantom power for condenser mics and runs on two AA batteries or USB power. An added bonus is an activation serial number for a download version of Ableton Live Lite.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from No audio streaming at 48kHz!? Pros - Small, including phantom power - pretty good build Cons - Knob should have more friction, pretty slippery - no TS, but RCA output instead. - no streaming audio at 48kHz, why? I work with 24bit 48k all the time and streaming audio at 44.1k is cause different weird tuning.
