Celestron's NexStar+ AZ Hand Controller is the brain for their NexStar telescopes. This tethered hand box connects to, and is powered by, the mount via a coiled cord. Once connected, it puts a 40,000-object database in the palm of your hand and helps you to explore near and deep-sky celestial subjects from the Moon and planets to galaxies, nebulae, and star clusters. If you're not sure what is overhead, simply use the Tour Mode and the NexStar+ will show you the best objects based on your current location, date, and time.

It depends on when the NexStar +AZ hand control was manufactured. The latest firmware version is 5.31.9200. The latest firmware can be updated using Celestron Firmware Manager (CFM): https://www.celestron.com/pages/drivers-and-software

Unfortunately, the NexStar 8i is not compatible with NexStar+ or StarSense hand control. You will need to locate an older Version 3 controller from another source.
