Celestron MicroDirect Reviews

Software was difficult to find

The correct software required to operate the microscope on my computer was next to impossible to find. The literature accompanying the MicroDirect simply said to go to the Celestron website, which listed dozens of software packages. Trying to find the correct one was a hit-or-miss proposition. Even the tech support rep was having difficulty. I finally stumbled on one that worked (even a blind squirrel eventually discovers an acorn). FYI it was Celestron HD Portable Capture for anyone faced with the same difficulty. Celestron needs to get its act together.

Updated Review -- Works well after you figure it out.

So after some time working with this thing from my previous review I found the following.. which is no where listed in the instructions anywhere or online. 1. If you want to use this with you PC and the included software DO NOT insert an SD card into the slot. If you do when you plug it into your computer the microscope defaults to MASS MEDIA mode to allow you to pull items off the SD card. There is no way to switch modes. When you plug the camera into the USB WITHOUT the SD card then the software will recognize it and works fairly well with it. 2. If you want to use the HDMI feature without a computer persay then you must have an SD card installed and an external USB power source. I find a USB charger from Anker or RavPower works well. If you plug the HDMI into a monitor then the USB into a computer the screen will display PC CONNECT and will only work with the PC software. After playing around I raised this up to 4 stars because once it works it works well. Yes it can be a bit of a task to focus sometimes since you're working with very tiny movements needed to focus but overall this does work well especially for what I needed it for to read circuit board numbers and see the tiny writing on power blocks and such.
