SAFETY FIRST: Observing the Sun without the proper protection may result in serious personal injury, including permanent eye damage and blindness, and/or damage to equipment. Never point an optic at the sun without an approved solar filter on the front of the optic. For direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder, ensure your filter is ISO 12312-2 (also written as ISO 12312-2:2015) certified. Never use photographic neutral density filters for direct solar viewing, viewing the sun through an optic, or when using cameras with an optical viewfinder.

Celestron 44414 Overview

  • 1Description

Celestron put together this EclipSmart Ultra 8-Piece Solar Observing and Imaging Kit to give you the tools you and your friends need to view and photograph the Sun and solar eclipses. The kit includes a pair of injection-molded wrap-around style solar glasses, a universal-fit solar filter for cameras and smartphones, four pairs of paper solar shades, an eclipse observing guide booklet, and a map of the 2017 North American solar eclipse.

  • EclipSMART Solar Shades Paper Solar Viewing Glasses (4-Pack)

Simple in design and easy to use, Celestron's un-magnified EclipSMART Solar Shades Paper Solar Viewing Glasses gives you an ultra-portable optic to view the Sun and solar eclipses. This basic optic features ISO-certified solar filters offering protection from IR and UV light while blocking 99.999% of intense visible light, allowing you to safely observe the Sun in a natural and neutral color tone. The heavy paper glasses are designed to fold at two different folding points to accommodate small and large interpupillary distances for comfortable use by most people. The Solar Shades are proudly made in the USA, and are offered here as a 4-pack so users can enjoy viewing the Sun with up to three friends. Along with the four pairs of glasses, a 30-page booklet is also included that is full of useful information about eclipses in general and the 2017 US eclipse in particular.

  • EclipSmart Deluxe 3-Piece Solar Observing and Imaging Kit

Celestron put together this EclipSmart Deluxe 3-Piece Solar Observing and Imaging Kit to give you the tools you need to view and photograph the Sun and solar eclipses. The kit includes a pair of injection-molded wrap-around style solar glasses, a universal-fit solar filter for cameras and smartphones, and an eclipse observing guide booklet.

The glasses meet the transmission requirements of ISO 12312-2 for safe direct observation of the Sun and block infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) radiation while filtering 99.999% of intense visible light. The glasses are made of rugged plastic and their design ensures full eye coverage at all times. The included booklet has a map and information on how best to view the North American solar eclipse in 2017.

The photo filter is not ISO certified, and intended for use with cameras that have live-view mode on their screens or smartphones ONLY. Tether holes allow it to be secured to most cameras and smart devices.

Photo Filter Safe Use and Handling
    • This is a photo filter ONLY, and is NOT to be used for visual use
    • Designed to work with a smartphone or DSLR with an LCD viewing screen used as a viewfinder
    • DO NOT look through any viewfinder or through the camera in any way, as some camera viewfinders do not run through the properly-filtered lens, which mean viewing the sun without a filter — that can cause eye damage up to and including blindness
    • If you are using the filter with a camera, use the video screen in live-view to find and center the sun for taking photos
    • Do not use the photo filter if you are unsure of the type of viewfinder your camera has

Celestron 44414 Reviews

EclipSmart Ultra 8-Piece Solar Observing and Imaging Kit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Kit good start to preparations! Great fold out chart and information sheet, large with lots of information on both sides. Booklet provides interesting information about the eclipse. The one pair of wrap around solar glasses great for someone who does not wear glasses. The paper solar pack of five should provide protection for people to view the eclipse and the sun other times, even people who wear glasses-if they are careful. The photography filter will work for a camera lens of 62mm or less, but will be hard to hold in front of the camera and do needed actions to line up the eclipse. You will need to devise some way to attach the filter to your camera lens. All in all, a good start to making preparations for photographing the solar eclipse!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reasonable Solar Observing Kit I particularly like the plastic Solar Observation Glasses--they're sturdy and fit over prescription glasses. The Celestron paper solar shades seem to be more substantial than the Lunt solar viewing glasses. I had ordered a pack of Lunt glasses and they were bent through the left lens when they were packed for shipping, so I exchanged them for a pack of the Celestron solar shades. The handheld solar filter would be adequate for a smartphone or point and shoot, but I ordered the DayStar Universal Solar Filter for use on my DSLR. The North American Eclipse Map/Poster was useless for me--I got my information online from NASA. The Solar Eclipse Observing Guide Booklet would probably be of use for school-age children, but I was hoping that it might include information on photographing the total eclipse. Overall, I am glad I ordered the Celestron Eclipsmart Ultra 8-Piece Solar Observing and Imaging Kit so I have the basics necessary for enjoying the total eclipse with my family.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good amateur set The set has what the amateur will need to safely see the total eclipse. The paper glasses (set of 4) are not going to survive a lot of use but, at this price single day life seems reasonable to me. The single pair of wrap around sun glasses are pretty solid and will last longer. We tried all the pieces and everything worked out of the box. The maps don't have all the detail some might want but, that is what the interactive maps on the web are for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solar Observing and Imaging Kit Excellent little kit to have. I really like the hard plastic glasses, they fit tightly to your face. The lens filter is very nice too and can fit over most zoom lenses that are not bigger than 65mm. The guides are good too if you plan on seeing the August eclipse. I personal will not be in the zones of the eclipse but will be used other eclipses.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Complete Package I opened the shipped package immediately on arrival and tested the glasses. All of the protective elements worked perfectly against a full sun and I look forward to using this kit on Aug. 21.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great kit for solar eclipse viewing & simple pictures The kit provides solar glasses/shades for 5 people plus a simple filter for holding over a camera lens. the 17 1/2 x 22 1/2 map of the US with the path of the eclipse is great for showing people. The booklet is very elemental. This is a great inexpensive kit for use at the 8/21/17 solar eclipse.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Solar Viewing Kit -- Just Double-check Your Lens Filter The plastic solar glasses were better quality that I thought they would be, and all the items in the kit performed pretty well. The only problem I had was the actual camera filter -- which I thought would be easily attachable to my camera lens, but was designed to be hand-held in front of your camera lens. After a while, it became very annoying (since I was trying to take multiple bracketed photos during the entire duration of the solar eclipse). I ended up carefully attaching the filter to the outside of my telephoto lens with gaffers tape. My suggestion would be to double-check and make sure you're ordering a filter that either screws onto your lens or fits between the back of the lens and your camera.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great value My 13 yr old son loves the kit. He tried all the glasses and studied the chart. I hope to have a wonderful day viewing the eclipe together. This kit is constructed well and is a good value for the time we are planning to use it for. It may not last a lifetime but the memories of viewing this event will.

question

How large is the photo filter in this kit?
Asked by: Martin P.
The filter area is 2.5 inches in diameter. It is made with a tab area on one side that allows you to hold it in front of your camera - not very safe. Because of this they suggest that you use lcd screen for viewing and not lens viewfinder. I bought a cheap UV filter and attached it to it so that it can be screwed onto the filter threads on the front of my lens.
