Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good idea, shoddy construction This is a great idea, and I carry it with high-powered binoculars, to give the option of using them supported for little extra carry weight. I wouldn't carry it with a scope that can't be used hand-held, because you can't guarantee you'll find a convenient stump or trunk to use it on. The problem is that the ball head is not well made. There's little hand-purchase on the locking screw, the lock up isn't very solid, and the movement of the head is very gritty. That doesn't make it unusable considering it won't be supporting a lot of weight anyway, but it could have been so much better. Internally, the metal locking screw contacts the outer side of a conical metal cup in which the ball sits. There are no plastic or rubber high-friction surfaces anywhere. I can't believe that's how decent ball heads are made (even lightweight ones). You can of course use the screw with a different ball head, but then you lose the compactness, and the convenience of storing the sharp end of the screw inside the ball head when not in use. It's a disappointment because Swarovski accessories are usually well made, albeit expensive.
