Android 6.0 Marshmallow

The Android operating system integrates heavily with Google's services. Using the card-based Google Now, Android quickly surfaces information for you whenever you need it, powered by the same Knowledge Engine that runs Google's web search. It's a personalized and customizable OS, allowing you to add your favorite apps or widgets to your homescreen. You can even download new themes using the Google Play Store, which offers access to more than one million apps, games, books, music, movies, and more. Android 6.0 Marshmallow overhauls permissions, allowing you to have finer control over what your applications have access to. It also marks the debut of Now on Tap, a context-sensitive update to Google Now that checks your current screen for keywords and then searches for them automatically. Other performance and security enhancements are included as well.

Water-Resistant and Dustproof

The Xperia XZ is protected against dust, rain, and low-pressure jets of water when its ports are sealed with the attached covers. Water-resistant in fresh water only; do not submerge.

Awesome hardware but terrible Android implementation!

I'm on the hunt for something to replace my 18-month-old Nexus 6P since cracking the screen and slowly making it worse through casual use. With the Nexus line gone, Sony's Xperia phones seemed to be a promising line to follow with their OEM+ environments plus they look great on paper. And look great this does! The hardware is fantastic. Waterproof, 1080p screen, edge-to-edge screen, two-stage (autofocus/release) shutter release button. Even got a few compliments in my four weeks with this phone since everybody these days has an iPhone (or clone) or Samsung. While the IPS display has great viewing angles, it's not AMOLED which is a tough feature to lose. It's 1080p, though, and a quick response. That really is the *only* negative to the hardware in my book. Solid 5/5 there. The software, though, is an epic failure. 2/2 stars... One for having Android 6.0 out of the box and another for OTA updates to Android 7.0 which I did before even setting up the device. That, from reviews, made me real hopeful but that was gone pretty quickly. From there, Sony took it upon themselves to make their own apps to replace some native Google apps (dialer, contacts, messaging, etc) which are absolutely awful. The first to go was their clock/alarm software. Then I noticed that, when I got an MMS, the phone would simply notify me with "No Subject" Get a spam caller? No reporting it, blocking it, or a sorely missed not even seeing it with Google's call/spam blocking.Their camera comes with a dozen other apps that take a while to get going for their effects including HDR. Never bothered to fiddle with them after the first few attempts. Excellent subject tracking, pretty weak everything else. Otherwise pretty good photos! Fortunately, most of these apps can be disabled and replaced. Dialer/Phone cannot. But what you can't fix are all the awful bugs!.. Google Now, as a trusted voice/unlock model, will not unlock after about 30 minutes of not using the device. It also will not wake the device, period. Not *much* of a big deal except that the fingerprint scanner is disabled for US models. Having rooted/ROMed in the past, I thought I would give flashing the EU firmware a shot. I never got it to work, though, despite following some vague directions. It seems you have to make that change before updating the phone to the latest OTA patches. Additionally, I regularly use Android Auto which, unless you have restarted the phone in the last hour, will only go for about 5 minutes before the phone shuts it off and needs to be reset. So basically we're left with a fantastic phone on the hardware side coupled with pretty awful software that *works* but fights you. I'd average it out to three stars. While I may be able to fix some of these things moving forward, my return window is closing and it's time to send this loaf back.

    Fantastic Android Phone

This became a replacement for my Z3 phone. I made all the updates to my XZ and now is loaded with an android 7.1.1. The phone responds very fast while I am doing web-browsing. I used the mobile transfer app of sony's to transfer all my apps and contact over the wireless so I am very happy for that! Camera is decent and it capture photos much faster than my Z3. Battery life is decent, with one charge I can make it through the day. The screen is very good, I am using the phone as a GPS for my car and the brightness is enough to see the maps even under heavy sunlight. The microphone is on the bottom unlike the Z3 that it was on the speaker and now people can hear me very clear. Overall I enjoy the vividness of the screen and it comes with the stereo speaker in the front, is like watching onto a minimalist TV. I love this phone, it has a good build quality and I will strongly recommend you to have a look at it.

one of the worst phones I've had :(

I got this phone because I previously had (and loved) the Sony Xperia Z3. Unfortunately, it died tragically in a skiing accident and was no long available for purchase, so I upgraded to the XZ, hoping it would be comparably good. I've no idea how Sony can make one phone so well, and then completely fail so miserably on another phone a year or two later. The battery life is poor, bordering on atrocious. From day one, I've had to use a third-party messaging app because Sony's built-in app would hang/crash every time someone sent me an MMS with a image included. The camera rarely focuses on what you want it to, and pictures aren't particularly good even when in focus. The phone app seems laggy and slow when dialing numerically. And many more. On the positive side, the phone looks really decent (subjectively) and has an OS that's pretty close to bare Android, but on balance, I definitely wouldn't buy this one again.

Good phone. But in the North American version has no fingerprint scanner. And it's not convenient. I want a scanner. Going to flash the phone. But overall the phone is very good. I love Sony. Thank you store!

    question

Are the speakers are loud on this phone?
    Asked by: Sargis H.
It's on par or slightly louder than others I've owned, like iPhones. That said, high volume equals some distortion. If you want to listen to tunes without earbuds or headset, they're Ok, but if you're looking for a mini audio player, it is a phone and not optimized for max volume/ boom box kind of listening.

    question

Can this phone record audio (without video) in hi-res format? Or, how good are the mics at recording audio only?
    Asked by: David E.
Only experience trying to record engine sounds while driving my car. Picks up a lot of extraneous noise even though it isn't a convertible, probably would work OK with a wind screen on the mic.
