I own a Gitzo GS3311S column. It is a nightmare to tighten. The column lock has fallen out as well. It has been replaced by this column. Are there any advantages to this new column?
This new column has a newer locking mechanism in it that is significantly better than the previous version.

I have the GT3533 standard length version of the Series 3 Systematic tripod and no hex key is needed. My version has a clever ratchet device built in to the assembly and the top plate can be removed and interchanged with the rapid center column without tools.
