Can the column be reversed to allow between-the-legs geared motion?
No. But you can mount a tripod head to both ends of the column, which makes reversing unnecessary.

What is the Gitzo head/accessory (?) that was used here in the photos posted by Basis which enables lateral movement of the column? Gitzo part number or the link?
The pictures show the G541 right angle bracket.
