HIVE LIGHTING Wasp 100-C Overview

The Wasp 100-C Studio PAR Spot LED Light from Hive is a lightweight, versatile LED source with a small form factor and superior performance features. The light has a 22°, highly polished reflector and 4-way barndoors, making it a great choice for selective lighting or long throw work. Among the available optional accessories includes a 180° flood reflector for wider coverage. The 100-C has a standard yoke with a 5/8" receiver for stand mounting.

Control is the key word in the construction of the 100-C. Hive uses what they call Perfect S.H.O.T controls which is an umbrella term for complete control and adjustment of every aspect of light output. Part of the success of the system is due to the use of 5-chip LED blending. Instead of the traditional 3 colors, Hive uses Red, Amber, Lime, Cyan, and Sapphire for nearly infinite color combinations with a high CRI/TLCI rating of 98 and 97. Color can be adjusted from a very warm amber 1650K to an icy blue 8000K. But control doesn't stop there. There's 360° hue adjustment around the color wheel as well as 0-100% saturation control. The 100-C can also be dimmed from 0-100%. Once you've grown accustomed to the 100-C's features, you'll want to take it everywhere, and thanks to its 100-240 VAC power supply, you can. The 100-C comes with the previously mentioned 22° reflector, a power supply mounting bracket, and a set of 4-leaf barndoors.

Perfect S.H.O.T. Controls

The 100-C has 0-100% saturation adjustment, 360° hue control, output regulation from 0-100%, and color temperature control from 1650 to 8000K for near infinite combinations to get a precise balance.

5-Chip Color Blending

The 100-C uses red, amber, lime, cyan, and sapphire LEDs instead of the traditional 3-color system to achieve a high CRI (98) and TLCI (97) to render colors faithfully with no output loss or color degradation.

Small and Light

The 100-C is 7.5" long and weighs just 5 lb.

HIVE LIGHTING Wasp 100-C Reviews

Okay

We bought this for our film program and the students love it. They like the that you can control it with an app on your phoned (but it can be buggy and log out). This feature has improved as you now have effects such as TV, fire, Police car, candle, lighting. We measured it against a tungsten fresnel 650w in full flood, and it was about 90% of that output when wasp was in full spot, with no lenses with the reflector. If I remember correctly at about 8'-10' it produced about 80-90 fc when in 5600k. It was less in 3200k. Other than the low output other cons are the the AC/DC adapter. It should really be built into the unit as the cord they provide is only about 3' long. We ended up buying a longer 4 pin cord so the adapter wouldn't hang from the unit when on a stand. It is pretty delicate. The base unit is fine, but when you add on the reflector, barn doors, ac/dc adapter and diffusion, it really gets flimsy and I worry that it won't last too long. I think this light is a step in the right direction to creating LED spot lights, but it still needs more work.

Great multi-use light

This light is crazy flexible -- It's small, easy to mount, compatibility with Profoto accessories is a great idea and the included optics work well. Sometimes not bright enough for a key (200-C for that), but there's always a reason to have it on set!

Good for niche jobs

As many have mentioned, they're not as bright as one would expect. They don't really compete with 650w Fresnels. The RGB function is great, especially for music videos, but any diffusion or soft boxes reduce the light level too much for general use. I find I hardly pull it out of my van much for this reason. Pros: - Lightweight, easy to rig to clamps vs traditional heavier units. - DMX with RGB allow for great effects. - Good for niche content. Cons: - The yoke isn't too great, and the rubber washer is chewed up very quickly on first few uses. - Low light levels vs traditional units, making it not practical for many uses. - Included lenses scratch very easily. - No spot lens included. - No quick built in RGB effects like the Arri units (Such as lightening, fire, cop cars, etc)

Great color control, needs to be stronger

I love the color control on this light but for $1000 it needs to be at least twice as strong if you plan to bounce of shoot through a silk. If you are in a really dark environment it is fine as long as you run your ISO up pretty high. I shoot with a Sony FS7 on Slog2- 30fps, ISO 2000 (the standard for this camera) and my aperture has to be at 2.8 to get an ok exposure with the light 7 feet way from the subject and shooting through a 4x4 silk. This puts me at almost the limit of my camera with no latitude for altering depth of field. The connector to the stand is a joke. If you attach a softbox it does not tighten enough to keep it from pointing down. This is just really sad engineering. Makes me question the build of the electronics. If HIve can make them two or three times as strong they would really knock out their competition.

Good light

Previously had reviewed this light but am unable to change my review. I had complained about the clamp not tightening firmly. I reached out to HIVE and they sent me new hardware for this known issue, and it has resolved my problem with the tilt control. They also sent me a redesigned vent that makes the range of the wireless APP control range considerably further.

Good light quality, bad mounting clamp

Light quality is great, although not as powerful as I'd like... but that's why I also have an aputure 300d. The wireless phone control works okay, although with a Space Light attached to my Wasp, I had to stand about 2 feet away from the light to get it to connect to the iPhone App. My biggest gripe with my two Wasp 100c's is the clamp that attaches the lights to your light stand. The TILT adjustment clamp does NOT hold firmly enough. Tightening the lever down as hard as I could, I would notice the light slowly pointing towards the ground over time. Such a stupid thing not to design properly on a light of this quality. As a result, the lights are very annoying to use if I can't even point them where I want to.

Amazing light

Like other reviews, I am amazed at the light, it been great for small/big projects, I purchased one and I’m amazed at the built quality, although the power wire does seem to fault out on me when I touch the brick but other than that great! The fan is very responsive and keep the light a cool temperature

Great light but not as advertised.

I'm super happy with all the features this light. Very useful, good first light for beginners I would say. Hive's marketing says this light has an equivalent output of "400w-700w". It's not even close, at any color temp. When put up against a 300w incandescent with a par reflector very similar and it was noticeably dimmer. It's not strong enough to be my main key given this info. Still a good tool but marketing set my expectations too high.
