    Samsung 960 Evo reviews

1TB 960 EVO NVMe M.2 Internal SSD is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 52.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic SSD with Astounding Read/Write Capabilities I use this for my OS and system applications, and I have never seen read write speeds at this level. It's astounding. I took one star off of design because while I have not had an issue with it, Thermal Throttling in high end desktops with heat is a very real risk with the M.2 drives. I really wish Samsung had provided some form of heat sink, or other cooling solution, luckily many of the new Motherboards coming out, are providing heat shield/sinks for M.2 drives. Oh i forgot to mention this thing is tiny. like smaller than laptop RAM tiny. If you are a performance junkie, or just need a new SSD. This is the way to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great M.2 SSD, blazingly fast, would buy again Currently, I am using this drive in an ESXi whitebox host for a lab at home. VMs are extremely quick on this drive as well as other operations such as cloning. Installation was easy and no difficulties were experienced with getting ESXi to recognize the drive. I haven't had enough time on the drive yet to discuss thermal throttling as so far I don't believe with a handful of VMs running that I have experienced any performance loss due to throttling. There are some great expansion M.2 cards that can provide significant cooling benefits over just simply plugging this drive into the motherboard.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Check compatibility with motherboard first I got a shiny new Supermicro 5018D-FN4T to put this drive into, as a virtualization server. If it worked, it was going to run like a greased pig at the state fair. Unfortunately, the Supermicro BIOS didn't recognize it so I couldn't install onto it. And Centos 7.3 didn't recognize it either, despite being a Linux 3.10.0 kernel (and NVMe drivers being baked into Linux since 3.3). Oddly, when I booted Fedora 25 (Linux 4.8) it saw the drive, which I was able to partition, format, copy files to, etc. So I ended up having to exchange it for a slightly slower, slightly more expensive T*a product instead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blazing Speeds An NVME SSD is very different from a normal SATA SSD. It's 3 times faster and with a very small footprint. I recommend you buy the retail version of the Samsung SSD so you will get the 3 year warranty and the Samsung Magician software. The OEM version doesn't have a software and the warranty is only one year. The software is important because it will help you upgrade the firmware. This is my second Samsung NVME SSD and I highly recommend them. The price difference from other brands is less than $10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Performance/Capacity and a good value for the money. I purchased the 960 EVO 1TB drive to use as a data drive for storing large digital image files on my Lenovo P50. As it turns out, the 1TB EVO it is a perfect compliment to the Samsung 950 Pro that I use for my Win10 boot drive. According to the benchmarks I ran, the 960 EVO is about 35% faster than my 950 Pro, which is impressive given the fact that the 950 Pro is a really fast drive. So that type of performance gain coupled with the higher capacity makes it the perfect choice for storing data in a two (2) drive system for me. You get what you pay for here folks. So if you're looking for a very fast, high capacity M.2 NVMe drive, your ship just came in.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from more room to dual-boot Windows I upgraded from the 950 Pro NVMe M.2 256GB to the 960 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB so I could have room to dual-boot Windows 7 and Windows 10. Not fully ready to make the switch to Windows 10. Even though I know I'm going to have to at some point. So I thought I dual-boot would be a good way to get acquainted with Windows 10. Decided to go with 960 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB because I've never had a problem with the Samsung product. Superior technology at slightly under the average price per gigabyte. I've read some bad reviews about this product but I'm hoping that there just user error. Only time will tell but for now I'm completely satisfied. Blazing speeds and superquick boots.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded Advertised Benchmarks! It is truly a nice surprise to have a product actually perform better than advertised. 3,257 MB sequential read right out of the box. I haven't even updated drivers or enabled rapid mode yet. Hopefully the total lifetime writes will live up to what is promised as well, but I couldn't be happier for now. While expensive, this drive is priced fairly for the performance boost it brings and worth every penny if R/W speed is what you need. I loaded a clean install of Windows 10 - Creator's Update (Build 15063.138) in under 5 minutes!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very fast SSD. Great product. Very fast SSD. Sequential read speeds on my Skylake laptop hit as high as 3,300 MB/s, and write speeds hit up to 1,900 MB/s. The IOPS numbers for 4K queue depth 1 that I get are oddly only half of what Samsung specs - but nevertheless still very fast. The 4K 32 QD IOPS are close to what Samsung specs. Lifespan may be an issue. In just a week, I've written over 1.5 TB, and this EVO is rated for 400 TB data writes max for its duration. Still, it would take me a good 5 years to hit its endurance rating at this aggressive usage pace. The Pro version is rated for much longer and that may be worth it for some users. We've hit the point where a single SSD can now max out the data bandwidth of the DMI 3.0 link that connects the Platform Controller Hub, to which the Samsung SSD is interfaced to, up to the CPU. So this SSD is as fast as you'll need until, who knows when, Intel brings us a motherboard with DMI 4.0. (You could today use PCIe3x4 graphics slots for multiple SSD's in Raid 0 for even greater speed if you have a desktop, but I don't know if you can make those into a bootable drive). Probably 98% of you out there will be fully satisfied with the performance that Samsung is delivering with the M.2 960 products now.
