Manfrotto MVMXPROBASEUS Overview

The XPRO Fluid Base from Manfrotto is a FLUIDTECH-cartridge-equipped panning base designed to convert many of Manfrotto's photo monopods into video supports.

The base is constructed of a durable trio of materials consisting of aluminum, steel, and rubber, which support professional use while restricting its weight to a negligible 15.8 oz. The center of the base consists of a 1/4"-20 attachment thread that is designed specifically to connect to the bottom section of select Manfrotto monopods. This thread is directly connected to a "3D" fluid cartridge that facilitates smooth pans and tilts from a single axis. The cartridge may be locked vertically to isolate movement to only the 360° panning axis, allowing for smooth, level, uninterrupted rotation. While engaging the vertical lock may allow the monopod to stand, it does not support free-standing function and should not be left unattended when not in use.

The three feet which extend from the center of the base feature a simple folding mechanism that allows them to retract up and around the base when not in use. This design allows the base to remain compact and portable while still attached to the monopod and allows for easy travel and storage of your gear.

Manfrotto MVMXPROBASEUS Reviews

A very good base for Manfrotto monopods

A very good base, smooth rotation and top quality materials. It does add both weight and size to your monopod, and the feet, even when folded up, can catch on things. I keep a cheap lens bag over the base when not in use. Note that this is not intended to support your rig in a free-standing way - you'll want to always keep a hand on it. I wouldn't trust this to support a rig for more than a few seconds. If you're looking for something to independently support your rig, you'll want something with much bigger feet. One thing ... if you plan on regularly putting on and taking off the base, know that there's a rubber shoe that goes on the bottom of the monopod once removed ... you can't (or shouldn't) just pop it out of the base and use the monopod on the ground. So you need to find a way to keep that little, loseable rubber foot with you.

Very Disappointed

I understand that these "toes" are not supposed to be stand-alone, or replace a tripod, but I find that they add almost NO additional stability to a monopod. They are completely inadequate for my intended use. I needed to be a wandering still-photographer at an event, and my plan was to have a flash on one monopod held in my left-hand for an off-camera angle, and I would use these "toes" to stabilize a monopod with my R5 camera, which I would then shoot one-handed with my right. If the toes were about twice the length and the locked shaft connection much stiffer, this might work, but not with this design. The materials and construction of the device seem good, although there is no way to adjust the resistance, and I wish that there was. Also, to be fair, if I was using a lightweight P&S camera or cell-phone, this would probably do an OK job. It also adds a small amount of additional stability when supported with 2-hands and using a short extension on the monopod, such as when shooting seated. When I attach a ball-head plus R5 camera on top, and shoot standing up, the top-heavy weight makes everything so wobbly that it is NO different than using the monopod without the toes. For me, this was a waste of both money and weight, and as cool as it sounds and looks, I doubt that I will ever find a use for it.

It just screws onto the tip, then it has a secondary threaded sleeve that threads the opposite direction to guard the first thread. This foot is only good for stabilizing and shouldn't be used hands-free, If you want to be able to let go of your camera get a wider foot or different monopod system.
