Canon 200mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

The EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM Lens from Canon is an EF mount lens that employs a rear-focus telephoto optical design that delivers outstanding picture quality throughout its entire focusing range. This lens also uses two ultra-low dispersion glass elements to ensure maximum image sharpness and accurate color fidelity. Canon's advanced ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) and rear focusing design provide silent, smooth high speed autofocusing. Manual focus override allows you to fine tune focus in autofocus mode and focusing range limiter lets you adjust the range of focus to ensure faster autofocus speeds. Its minimum focus distance is 4.9'.

The EF 200mm f/2.8 II is fully compatible with the Canon EF1.4x III and EF2.0x III extenders. A dedicated, detachable lens hood is supplied with the lens and a detachable, rotatable tripod collar is available as an optional accessory.

Two UD Glass Elements
Two UD-glass elements minimize aberrations and result in sharp pictures from corner-to-corner.
Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor
An Ultrasonic Autofocus Motor (USM) and rear focusing system provide fast, smooth and quiet autofocus.
Focus Range Limiter
On the EF 200mm f/2.8L II lens you can choose the focusing distance range with a switch on the lens barrel. By setting a suitable focusing distance range, actual autofocus time can be shorter. The two focusing ranges are 4.9' to infinity and 11.5' to infinity
Manual Focus Override
Full-time manual focus override allows you to use manual focus mode for precision focusing at any time, even when in autofocus mode.

    Canon 200mm f/2.8 reviews

EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM Lens is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 196.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from another sleeper lens I bought this one pretty recently but I have to say it's gotten a lot of use. I'm not a big fan of zooms, but I have a few. I was looking at the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. Very pricey, and it would probably spend most of its time at 200mm. So for 1/3 of the price I get this 200mm f.2.8L II. I think it's actually sharper, and I don't miss the IS much because honestly below 1/200 of a second your subject motion comes into play. Also this lens is quite sharp wide open. It's heavy-ish but certanly not in its focal length range and certainly lighter than the 70-200s are. If you don't mind changing lenses to get the job done, get this lens. Between this and the 135 f/2L I find the short telephoto range is covered.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gold Standard Lens for Wide Field Astrophotography I bought this lens for astrophotography with my Canon 5D mk iii and an Astrotrac mount. I was not disappointed. For astro, this is a huge improvement over the 70-300mm f4-5.6 USM that I was using before. Better star shape, very little coma or chromatic abberations, just beautiful almost all the way to the corners of the full frame. And being able to go down to f2.8 is amazing, although I see slightly better performance at f3.2 or f4.0. Still a huge improvement over my zoom, which had to be stopped down to f8.0 to get sharp images at 200mm. I am attaching a shot of the Witch Head Nebula I capture within a couple days of owning the lens. If you are thinking about this lens for Astrophotography, there is nothing to think about, just do it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stealth Telephoto I was attracted by this lens because of the stealth aspect of this lens - it's black and not huge so it passes for a normal camera lens so it doesn't attract attention - unlike the large white zooms, although I also have the outstanding 70-300mm L zoom which is highly recommended. I like primes and I love this lens - if you like 200mm and want sharp images this is for you - plus the f/2.8 is nice as well. This lens may appeal to a limited audience but I think it's a great lens for a reasonable price. Technical details can be found elsewhere on the web, but I am completely satisfied. Used with 60D.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great lens at a great price... This is a great lens. It is fast at f2.8, small, and inconspicuous compared to the other Canon 200mm (zoom and prime) white lenses. The build quality is superb - typical for a L lens. I find it balances very nicely with my 5D mk II (with battery grip). AF, IQ and contrast are great. The AF is very fast and quiet. The only real down side is the lack of IS and of course it isn't a zoom. The 70-200 f/2.8 IS L is purchased in place of this lens by many people. The 70-200 is a fantastic lens, but for the price and size this lens is hard to beat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Suprisingly Awesome I was carrying a 70-200, but realised I was permanently jammed out at 200 for wildlife/sports, and the results were not quite what I had hoped for. I tried this because it is 2.8L, compatible with the extenders, nice price, and I was betting on gaining prime sharpness over my zoom. It delivers, and it keeps surprising me. It's lightweight. It's black, so it doesn't scream for attention. I don't use the tripod mount often but I was a little annoyed that it wasn't included, had to pick one up separately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp lens I sold my 70-200mm f2.8 (non IS) and bought this lens. I like its lighter weight than 70-200mm f2.8, neither feel so bulky. It is capable to shoot very sharp images, but it requires steady hands, or some assist like a monopod at least. I use it with 2x TC to make it 400mm (640mm with 1.6x crop) and it still produces very impressive images without degrading IQ so much. But again you need a pretty sturdy tripod, or monopod with faster shutter speed to accomplish it. I also noticed that it sometimes hunts for focus in a low light situation. Overall I'm very pleased with its performance. Some people may ask for IS and I can understand if they do, but I think this lens is just right at right price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lens! Not enough good things can be said about prime lenses! They overpower zooms (in my opinion!) every time. I was tired of the flat images my 70-300 was producing, and how I HAD to use a flash to achieve a clear photo. This 200mm lens works in a surprisingly low light with minimal flash, and gets crystal clear photos even without a flash if you are outside in even before sunset. The bokeh that is created with this lens is soft and even, while keeping your subject ultra sharp. I'm a wedding photographer and I used this for the first time over the weekend and was incredibly happy with the results. So happy, that I'm considering trading in my 17-40 wide angle for another wide angle prime. The primes just create a softer, truer, better lit and more emotional image. Thanks, Canon!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Lens This was a Christmas gift from my husband, and I'd been wanting it for years. I take a lot of bird photos, and with my old 75-300mm zoom lens, I was getting a lot of purple fringing/chromatic aberration. That same day I took several bird photos, and not a single instance of purple fringing. The photos are all sharp and wonderful. I was also fiddling around with it indoors, and took a couple of shots of my dog. I used the on-camera flash since the light was so low, expecting to hate the harshness as I usually do. I was happily surprised with the results. If the first week is any indication, I'm going to be extremely happy with this lens.
