Microsoft Surface Dial Reviews

Excellent, I do not have a Microsoft Surface PC

I do not have a Microsoft Surface and I am using the dial on a regular PC. I am using it as a volume control, to scroll, and also to zoom when using a drawing tablet. So far so good. I love the feeling I get when using it and how cool it looks.

Perfect cordless volume control.

When I learned the Surface Dial can be used with my non-Surface Windows 10 PC, I bought it as a perfect solution to having a volume knob to mute and control the volume as I listen to video with widely varying volumes between program segments and advertisements. And it does many other tricks as well. Great price on B&H.

Excellent product!

New Windows 10 feeling!!!

Surprisingly useful

Turns out this unassuming little silvery puck is kinda useful. If you need a dedicated jog wheel for video scrubbing, you may want a dedicated option with plenty of customizable buttons, but if you're a casual video editor, this'll really come in handy. Just assign the wheel and single-click functions for the video editor you're using to the editor's relevant shortcuts. It's that easy. The dial knows what app is in focus and changes the settings accordingly. But don't limit yourself to video editing: undo/redo, brush parameters, canvas rotate, next/previous track with play/pause for the button actuation, ink replay in OneNote ... the sky is the limit. And it's tiny and wireless! Just know two things: you can't assign shortcuts that use the Windows key, and the Dial will fall asleep after a while, which doesn't bother me but might bother you.

Not as powerful as I would have liked

I use it on my desktop Windows 10 PC (not a Surface model) and it works fine, even without the touch screen. It connects via bluetooth and it responsive, though you usually have to wake it up if you haven't used it in a while, but it hardly ever fails to do so. It is easy to configure, feels great to the touch (even if it is a little smaller than I thought it was) and the little vibrations it gives off when turning while executing certain commands provides great feedback. You can configure custom commands that work generally over Windows, or specific commands for specific apps. These commands are simulated key presses and there is lots you can do with these, but sadly, the Windows key on your keyboard is not an option, so no commands using it are possible. Also, no commands emulating mouse actions (scrolling, clicks) are possible. Additionally, I've had issues with some apps not recognizing commands properly or at all (namely, music production software Cubase only get the standard scroll function - no custom commands are triggered -, and even the standard zoom function works differently than expected.) I would have liked a few more options for configuration as well as better compatibility. As it is a bit of a niche product, I haven't found any custom drivers or anything that could elevate its potential, but it does what is advertised. (I provide a photo for size reference; my hands are on the small side)

question

Is this compatible with MacBook Pro, and which programs?
Asked by: Thorsten
As far as I know the dial is compatible with any Windows 10 compatible computer (and not just Microsoft Surface series, which is the case for Microsoft Pen). So yes, it is compatible with Apple H/W BUT NOT in native (MacOS) mode: ONLY if you are in Windows compatibility mode (via Boot Camp, Parallels Desktop etc).
