  • 1Description

The Pegasus3 R4 Mac Edition 12TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array is a Thunderbolt 3 RAID storage array designed for simultaneous streaming, editing, and backup of high-resolution videos and large multimedia files. This storage array's Thunderbolt 3 interface offers high-speed connectivity. The Pegasus3 R4 stores up to 12TB of data spread across four 3TB SATA drives. Actual storage capacity will differ according to the RAID configuration. These drives are hot-swappable for easy access and come pre-configured in RAID 5 mode, which is optimized for data protection, capacity, and performance. RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, and JBOD levels are also supported; each level offers configuration options for capacity, data protection, redundancy, and speed.

The Pegasus3 R4 storage array has dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, one port for direct system attachment and another port for daisy-chaining up to 6 Thunderbolt devices. This storage is formatted in the HFS+ file system for Mac and is compatible with Time Machine in OS X, which automatically backs up your entire Mac system. Included is a Thunderbolt cable and a free license of ChronoSync Pegasus Edition Backup Software for macOS.

Up to 40 Gb/s port speed - twice the speed of Thunderbolt 2, 4x the speed of USB 3.1
Dual Thunderbolt 3 ports allow up to 6 daisy-chained devices
Provides connectivity for dual 5K displays
Ideal for 4K and high-resolution video editing and all demanding creative workflows
High throughput RAID performance supports simultaneous streaming and editing of 4K video while providing connectivity to dual 5K displays.

    Promise Technology R4 reviews

    Pegasus3 R4 Mac Edition 12TB 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Array (4 x 3TB) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very nice hard drive! I wasn't sure if this drive would work with my MacBook Pro which has Thunderbolt 2 and the latest version of OS Sierra. I asked tech support if Apple's Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adaptor would work to connect the drive, they thought it would be hasn't been tried yet since it's a new drive. I'm happy to say it does work and it performs great!! I used the adaptor to plug into the drive and a Thunderbolt 2 cable to connect to the laptop. It was plug and play. Highly recommended!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Zero stars Do not buy this. Immediately after installation the RAID started mounting and dismounting from the iMac all day long every day. Then within 2 weeks the chassis went bad so I replaced it under warranty. Promise refused to pay shipping for the broken chassis to be returned to them and they placed a $699 hold on my credit card for the new chassis until I pay to ship the old chassis back to them. The new chassis doesn't work and their RAID driver won't load on the imac. Spent hours on the phone with their level 1 tech, level 2 tech, and then their senior engineer... the Pegasus3 still won't power up all the way nor connect to the imac. The company said they need to email a design engineer and he will look at the system report and get back to me. They are not in a hurry to fix the problem. The company states that my data is safe, but we will see if they are correct if they can ever get the Pegasus to work again. Save your sanity and don't buy this!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great drive but ... ... just be aware that in RAID 5, this isn't a total 12TB drive; it's 9TB. I didn't think about that when estimating size for use on a feature film and ended up having to buy an additional drive to get the 12TB total. Other than that, it worked flawlessly! I will likely buy my own; likely the 24TB.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Jury is still out... Mac Pro (cylinder style, 2014) with Thunderbolt 2, OSX Sierra. I have a 2014 Thunderbolt 1 Drobo 5D (not the current 5Dt) with an accelerator SSD. I am happy with Drobo's forgiving handling of disk sizes. Drive spindown has two choices- always running or timed spindown ( 15 minutes). The drive always spins down while I am working- when I need it I have to wait for it to come back up- annoying as can be. I've been back and forth with Drobo on that, and it appears timed operation is 'a feature'. I needed more space. Either I try the Drobo 5Dt with Thunderbolt 2, or Pegasus. I did Pegasus because Promise clearly states that it wakes up when the computer wakes up, and sleeps when it sleeps. Sold. Now whether to do Thunderbolt 2 (Pegasus2 series) or Thunderbolt 3 with an Apple Thunderbolt 2 to 3 adapter. I'm in the process of a Macbook (Thunderbolt 3), so I went for the Pegasus3 hoping the adapter would work with my desktop Mac Pro. I am pleased to report that the adapter works fine (must use Sierra!). Caveats: Symply software was not in the box; there is a coupon for a download when it's available. So I just plugged it in. Lots of nervous dismounts as the drive built the RAID 5 array (default). Had to babysit it, as the OS would complain every so often about a disk not ejected properly. Drive would not continue until I dismissed the warnings. I was worried that this was an adapter problem. I did not attempt any disk reads or writes during build; waited the 10+ hours for it to complete. Once done, copied and timed a 23 gig file to Drobo and Pegasus. Drobo: 3 min, 20 sec. Pegasus3: 5 min, 37 sec. WAY, WAY slower that Thunderbolt 1! Waited and tried again- same result. Shutdown both drives through the respective software panels. Restarted and timed it again: Drobo: 3 min, 20 sec (same). Pegasus: 1 min, 9 sec. It fixed itself and was now significantly faster! Moral: when the build is done, shut it down and restart. 'Simply' software is still the unknown.
