FREEFLY MoVI Pro overview

  • 1Description

Get up and ready to shoot smooth handheld footage with FREEFLY's MōVI Pro Handheld Bundle. Consisting of the MōVI Pro motorized gimbal stabilizer, MōVI Ring Pro handle, and the MIMIC controller, this kit can perform in either single or dual-operator configurations.

The MōVI Pro motorized gimbal stabilizer steadies cameras weighing up to 15 pounds, rendering it compatible with mirrorless cameras all the way up to smaller cinema cameras. With the included batteries, the camera and essential accessories can be powered without adding any bulk to the MōVI Pro.

By offering a unified design, the MōVI Ring Pro lets the camera operator grip the attached MōVI Pro from nearly any angle. Since the design also goes above and below the stabilizer itself, high and low shots are easily accomplished with minimal stretching on the part of the camera operator.

For dual-operator configurations, the MIMIC syncs with the MōVI Pro, allowing one operator to control the camera movements while a second operator moves the camera rig. The MIMIC has Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz radios built-in for device and accessory communication. Additional control can be achieved with the included Bush Pilot Auxiliary Control Knob. When connected to the MIMIC, the Bush Pilot can actuate focus, zoom, or iris, depending on how you have it set up.

    FREEFLY MoVI Pro reviews

MōVI Pro Handheld Bundle is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 9.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Issues with Movi Ring I purchased the bundle in January and have had issues with the TITH connection on the ring from the very beginning. Even with tightening the connection clamp, there is still a lot of play in the connection that causes the weight of the Movi to shift while tilting the ring. The weight shift makes the Movi nearly unusable, because if it happens during a shot, the smoothness of the motion is ruined. I have been emailing back and forth with Freefly customer service since February 23. Their customer service seems to be a complicated process, and there is a lot of skepticism over my ability to determine if I'm tightening the TITH connection properly. I have lots of experience with rentals of the M5 and M10, and I've never had this issue with those rentals, so I'm not sure what's going on. Hopefully Freefly can get this resolved soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything you want in a gimbal clap hands emoji I used the M5 for a while when I was shooting with a DSLR and sold it when I upgraded to the Ursa Mini. I borrowed a DJI Ronin and put my Ursa Mini Pro on it (external buttons help a ton as a gimbal camera btw), and after using it for about an hour my back was absolutely killing me, and I was literally sore for several days. Flash forward to finally purchasing the Movi Pro--I used it three days in a row shooting for about six hours each day, and my back was fine. Same camera, same monitor, much lighter gimbal. And part of that is being able to set it down--but a huge part of it is that it's just so much lighter. For my uses I haven't made any tweaks...the way they had Majestic Mode set up out of the box has been great for how I use it. New batteries are a massive improvement over the original Movi batteries. I power the Ursa Mini Pro off the p-tap outlet in the carriage, which is wonderful. Using the Movi that way I can shoot 2 or 3 hours before the batteries run out, and that's if I'm pausing the motors in-between shots and being mindful of how long I'm leaving the camera on when I'm not using it. And that's nice because it preserves my v-mount batteries for handheld/tripod use. The ring is great, makes it so easy to control and maneuver the gimbal. And it's so very nice to be able to set it down at the end of a shot instead of having to walk back to where the stand is located. And you can set it on desks or other flat surfaces to get low-angle tripod-ish shots. But mostly it's great for preserving energy. The only thing I've had an issue with is the top handle. For one, I'm not sure why they couldn't have come up with a quick-release solution instead of having to screw in 4 tiny screws, and then unscrew them and take the handle off when you want to put the Movi back in the case. That's the only part of it that it's slick and easy. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt as to why they didn't do that--they're much smarter than I am and have spent way more time thinking about this thing! But also, the monitor mount that's built into the handle is thoughtful, but it doesn't seem to be designed to hold the weight of my SmallHD 702 bright monitor (which is fantastic)...after a few uses the screws started to come loose which makes the monitor bobble while I'm using it. I really like that spot for a monitor mount but I'm thinking that I'm going to have to buy a different 30mm mount to put the monitor on somewhere else on the ring. I'm using the Anton Bauer 9" P-tap cable which is a perfect fit for the UMP, and the Wooden Camera coiled 20" - 36" BNC cable; in the picture I've got a different SDI cable that didn't work so well because it didn't flex and didn't have right-angle ends. It's been tricky to balance the Ursa Mini Pro but once it's locked in the Movi Pro handles it wonderfully, and the resulting footage is indeed majestic. And when I get home my back still has enough strength to pick up my daughter. Everything you want in a gimbal, and worth the price in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from To the poster who had a toad in the hole issue Freefly said their machining was off on the toad in the hole on the Movi Pro Ring. I got mine replaced and it's all good and tight. I had slop in my connector too. Reach out to them and they will replace it.
