Apple MacBook Pro overview

  • 1Description

Experience the innovative interface of the Touch Bar in the late 2016 space gray Apple 15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

The Touch Bar places controls right at your fingertips and adapts to different apps to provide useful functions without having to navigate complex menus or memorize keyboard shortcuts. Replacing the function keys in the top row of the keyboard, the Touch Bar features a Retina-quality display and supports multi-touch input.

The power button has been upgraded with a Touch ID sensor, so you can quickly log into your MacBook Pro using your fingerprint. You can also use Touch ID to make purchases over the web, thanks to Apple Pay. Touch ID enables a quick, accurate reading of your fingerprint and uses sophisticated algorithms to recognize and match it with the Secure Enclave in the Apple T1 chip.

The system features a 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, 16GB of 2133 MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory, a 512GB PCIe-based SSD, four Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, a 50% larger Force Touch trackpad, a keyboard with a 2nd-gen butterfly mechanism, stereo speakers with double the dynamic range of its predecessor as well as improved bass, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack. macOS Sierra is the installed operating system.

Touch Bar
The Touch Bar replaces the function keys that have long occupied the top of your keyboard with something much more versatile and capable. The multi-touch, Retina-quality display changes automatically based on what you're doing, from showing traditional system controls, such as volume and brightness, to more directly interacting with or browsing through content. Intelligent typing features like emoji and predictive text improve the typing experience, and you'll be able to customize the Touch Bar to fit your needs. The Touch Bar can also adapt to apps, such as Mail, Safari, Messages, and even third-party apps like Adobe Photoshop, so you'll have access to useful functions previously hidden in menus.
Touch ID
A Touch ID sensor has been integrated into the power button, so you can quickly log into your account, even when another user is logged in. You can also use it with Apple Pay to securely purchase things over the web, thanks to macOS Sierra.
Retina Display
The 15.4" Retina Display has a 2880 x 1800 resolution and features brighter LED backlighting than its predecessor as well as an increased contrast ratio, delivering deeper blacks and brighter whites. Its larger pixel aperture and variable refresh rate make it more power efficient than previous generations. It also supports the P3 color gamut, which allows for more vibrant colors. This ensures true-to-life pictures with realistically vivid details, which are essential for graphic design, color grading, and editing.
Force Touch Trackpad
The Force Touch trackpad on the 15.4" MacBook Pro is 50% larger than the previous generation. The Force Touch trackpad takes all the capabilities of multi-touch and adds force sensors that detect subtle differences in the amount of downward pressure you apply. This lets you have a deeper connection to your content, bringing more functionality right to your fingertip. It also introduces haptic feedback to MacBook Pro — allowing you not just to see what's happening on the screen, but to feel it. With multi-touch, you can use realistic gestures like swiping or pinching to switch between apps, navigate your content, and get the most out of your desktop space.
Thinner & Lighter
The 15.4" MacBook Pro features a redesigned enclosure design and all-metal unibody construction that creates a rigid and dense notebook that is also thin and light. At just 15.5 mm thin, the 15.4" MacBook Pro is 14 percent thinner and has 20 percent less volume than the previous generation. It is also nearly half a pound lighter at just four pounds.
The speakers have been totally redesigned to provide as much as twice the dynamic range and up to 58 percent more volume, with two-and-a-half-times louder bass for maximum boom. Plus, they're connected directly to system power, enabling up to three times more peak power.
macOS Sierra
The 15.4" MacBook Pro runs macOS Sierra, which features Siri integration, Universal Clipboard, Apple Pay on the web, and memories in Photos.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously or one multi-panel 5K display. The Macbook Pro has four ports, with each pair using a dedicated bus.

    Apple MacBook Pro reviews

15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (Late 2016, Space Gray) is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Received Damaged Apple 15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar I received my new Apple MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (Late 2016, Space Gray) today, but I noticed there is a dent on the right hand side of the aluminum body near the hinge of the screen. It's a bit of an eye sore since it's right in front of me. I'm also noticing that the edges of the screen's glass look a bit rough and the overall screen itself looks kind of warped if you look at it from a certain angle. I was really excited for this laptop to arrive, but now I can't wait till customer service responds back with a solution to all of these issues. Exchange please?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MBP 15.4 w/touch bar Space Gray Love the thin display and new size of the MBP. At first, I thought the touch bar was another gimmick but as more companies design their sites to use it, I believe it will actually set a precedence on laptops moving forward. Just wait for it... You'll see PC's soon integrating the same or similar type bar into their products. The only drawback I can see is the lack on any transitional USB-A ports. I understand that they did this mainly for size and power constraints but cmon, having to use a USB-C to USB-A cable is a nuisance. In terms of battery life, I am not experiencing the battery issues that were originally reported. I get the expected battery life that the MBP was designed to.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First time MacBook user I work in software development, and I've got to say that this is MUCH nicer than a PC. Windows is horrible for developing in general (Unless you develop for windows of course) and I really don't like Linux , it gives me a headache to install every single thing. I needed a laptop to work on it and to be my main laptop and this one's beautiful, fast, with a long battery life and it works like a charm, I'm really glad I got it : ). Do note that I am NOT comparing it to older MacBook models, but to PCs that I've had.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love it This is my 5th macbook and I love it. It is a huge improvement from my 2012 version macbook. The trackbar is nice but still needs to be worked on and integrated more into programs. It certainly has a place to go and it is only a matter of time. I do find the USBC ports to be slightly annoying as nothing is USBC yet. The keyboard was something that felt different and I had heard complaints about but after a week I was used to it and now going back to an older macbook feels foreign to me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn’t be better! I may never buy a pc again. This machine, with oversized touch pad, lightning speed, crystal clear graphics, and the amazing touch bar is truly head and shoulders above the rest. My other machine is a Surface Pro (also new for work) and this puts the Surface to shame! My MacBook has 16gb and I recommend at least that. But one now!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome power in a compact package I bought this laptop to replace both a 2009 dual-2.26GHz Mac pro and an i7-equipped 2012 MacBook Air, both of which were getting long in the tooth. My heaviest duty task is to render video from automotive track day events where I have multiple video cameras as well as positional and drivetrain data that I merge into a video, and this computer is considerably faster at this task than either of my older machines. I am a longtime customer of B&H and they're great. i like that they stock build to order options for Apple laptops as I frequently want something more than the default configuration, a larger hard drive in this case. I accessorized this computer with a soft-touch hard shell case from i-Blason, and I picked up some USB-C->USB-A dongles as well as an inexpensive USB-C SD/MicroSD card reader, and I am go to go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I was skeptical of this deal... but WOW. Amazing product. I was researching laptops for a few weeks after months of deliberating on whether or not I would really NEED one for my teaching credential program. I was on the fence for a long time. I have a custom-built desktop at home with killer specs that I built for gaming and programming. But not having a computer on the go was killing me in the first two months of my program. I was searching for laptops and trying to find a nice balance between quality and price; but it was tough. Chromebooks and browser-based OS laptops seemed inadequate to me since I would often need to write without the web. Not to mention, my experience with cheaper laptops is that they break quickly (my sister's laptop actually snapped in half after two years of heavy use-- it still works, but she has to be very particular about the way she opens and closes it). This macbook had all the specs I was hoping to have in a computer-- solid state drive with a dual core processor (meaning it will not lag suddenly and the performance will not diminish over time as the physical state of the hard drive wears down). The large screen was a bonus as is the reliable OS (windows has honestly been bugging me a bit lately-- coming from a hardcore "PC" even though "mac vs PC" is a false dichotomy homeboy). Anyways, B&H had it shipped quickly and it arrived without any problems. Not to mention the bonus savings I received with the tax and shipping paid for... I am honestly super blessed. Typing this review on it now-- battery life is also pretty good so far. Hopefully it stays that way (fingers crossed).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it Bought the macbook pro as my personal computer. I have the older model at work, and I really love the fingerprint sensor. My only complaint is that the keyboard takes getting used to. It's action is quite different from older versions.
