Apple MacBook Pro overview

  • 1Description

Experience the innovative interface of the Touch Bar in the late 2016 silver Apple 15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

The Touch Bar places controls right at your fingertips and adapts to different apps to provide useful functions without having to navigate complex menus or memorize keyboard shortcuts. Replacing the function keys in the top row of the keyboard, the Touch Bar features a Retina-quality display and supports multi-touch input.

The power button has been upgraded with a Touch ID sensor, so you can quickly log into your MacBook Pro using your fingerprint. You can also use Touch ID to make purchases over the web, thanks to Apple Pay. Touch ID enables a quick, accurate reading of your fingerprint and uses sophisticated algorithms to recognize and match it with the Secure Enclave in the Apple T1 chip.

The system features a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, 16GB of 2133 MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory, a 1TB PCIe-based SSD, four Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, a 50% larger Force Touch trackpad, a keyboard with a 2nd-gen butterfly mechanism, stereo speakers with double the dynamic range of its predecessor as well as improved bass, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack. macOS Sierra is the installed operating system.

Please note that this Mac may come with an earlier version of macOS. You can upgrade to the latest version through the Mac App Store app.

Touch Bar
The Touch Bar replaces the function keys that have long occupied the top of your keyboard with something much more versatile and capable. The multi-touch, Retina-quality display changes automatically based on what you're doing, from showing traditional system controls, such as volume and brightness, to more directly interacting with or browsing through content. Intelligent typing features like emoji and predictive text improve the typing experience, and you'll be able to customize the Touch Bar to fit your needs. The Touch Bar can also adapt to apps, such as Mail, Safari, Messages, and even third-party apps like Adobe Photoshop, so you'll have access to useful functions previously hidden in menus.
Touch ID
A Touch ID sensor has been integrated into the power button, so you can quickly log into your account, even when another user is logged in. You can also use it with Apple Pay to securely purchase things over the web, thanks to macOS Sierra.
Retina Display
The 15.4" Retina Display has a 2880 x 1800 resolution and features brighter LED backlighting than its predecessor as well as an increased contrast ratio, delivering deeper blacks and brighter whites. Its larger pixel aperture and variable refresh rate make it more power efficient than previous generations. It also supports the P3 color gamut, which allows for more vibrant colors. This ensures true-to-life pictures with realistically vivid details, which are essential for graphic design, color grading, and editing.
Force Touch Trackpad
The Force Touch trackpad on the 15.4" MacBook Pro is 50% larger than the previous generation. The Force Touch trackpad takes all the capabilities of multi-touch and adds force sensors that detect subtle differences in the amount of downward pressure you apply. This lets you have a deeper connection to your content, bringing more functionality right to your fingertip. It also introduces haptic feedback to MacBook Pro — allowing you not just to see what's happening on the screen, but to feel it. With multi-touch, you can use realistic gestures like swiping or pinching to switch between apps, navigate your content, and get the most out of your desktop space.
Thinner & Lighter
The 15.4" MacBook Pro features a redesigned enclosure design and all-metal unibody construction that creates a rigid and dense notebook that is also thin and light. At just 15.5 mm thin, the 15.4" MacBook Pro is 14 percent thinner and has 20 percent less volume than the previous generation. It is also nearly half a pound lighter at just four pounds.
The speakers have been totally redesigned to provide as much as twice the dynamic range and up to 58 percent more volume, with two-and-a-half-times louder bass for maximum boom. Plus, they're connected directly to system power, enabling up to three times more peak power.
macOS Sierra
The 15.4" MacBook Pro runs macOS Sierra, which features Siri integration, Universal Clipboard, Apple Pay on the web, and memories in Photos.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously or one multi-panel 5K display. The MacBook Pro has four ports, with each pair using a dedicated bus.

    Apple MacBook Pro reviews

15.4" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (Late 2016, Silver) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 43.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I like it so far. It is small and light. I hope it is powerful, but I haven't had a chance to put it through it's paces yet. It is taking a long time to migrate data from my previous MBP, install new software, and discover that some older programs aren't supported in OS Sierra. The USB C connectors are an extra step. I bought an adapter, but discovered that my external monitor does not work with it. Wacom does not support the driver for my older tablet, so I need to buy a new one. The maker of my RPG Keys couldn't keep up with Apple and Adobe, so I have to leave that awesome device behind. There have been challenges.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wish I could leave a better review. I bought this computer to replace my Late 2011 Macbook Pro. Upon opening the shiny, perfect, Apple packaging I was gutted to discover the battery was dead on arrival and would not charge. So after taking it to Apple Genius Bar to verify, indeed - the battery was dead and failed the diagnostic. So I exchange it with B&H which was painless but cost me a week of time to wait for the new machine. Now I open the new machine and.. the left shift key consistently does not activate when pressed. After reading the other reviews on this machine it seems either B&H got a batch of lemons or the entire 2016 production run is full of lemons. I'm contemplating returning it. I don't know if I want to risk another exchange and another lemon. I also don't know if I want to stay with Apple after this experience.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Price, big performance upgrade. First off, I upgraded to this particularly for the four USB-C ports now that the cables are easy to come by and hubs and adapters are no longer necessary. I can now plug in my SSD, 4TB Rugged drive, Card reader and power all at the same time. Speed and performance is a huge upgrade from my 2012 Retina MacBook Pro (2.7 i7, 16GB, 512GB). I absolutely love the new keyboard, large trackpad and have found the Touch-ID and Touch Bar very useful. B&H's price was hands down the best available anywhere, even hundreds lower than a refurbished one from Apple. At this price I can still sell it later this year, if Apple comes out with a revolutionary new model in June!!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Quality and consistency not there I really wanted to upgrade my MacBook Air. It's been a fantastic little computer and super speedy. The screen though is the only disappointment now that the retinas have been out for several years. it also has the advantages of having SD slot built in and a much longer battery life than anything else out there still. I bought this 2016 MBP with touchbar - 15", in fact, I bought two--one for me and one for my son. The two arrived in good time thanks to B&H. My son opened his and started it up first thing when it arrived in the morning. It worked great. I waited until the afternoon because I was busy at work. I started it up and about 2 minutes after logging in it froze and rebooted with a kernel panic. That was not a good sign! I knew that there were updates since it came with Sierra so I got it to reboot to my flash drive and reinstalled the OS. I logged in after install and it froze again. There were strange things going on on the screen and you could tell about 2/3 from the top that something wasn't right because dragging around a window would really lag in that place. The computer then started to lock up every couple minutes and reboot. Sometimes it would complete the reboot and others it would just stay at the Apple logo. After messing around for a few hours that night and no hope I boxed it up and called BH for an exchange which they did with no questions ask. A week later the next one arrived after they verified the exchange. It started off great. Touch ID was easy to setup. I installed everything, copied files, setup Dropbox etc. I noticed the keys were a little louder when typing than what I was used to with all my Apple products but I could get used to it. I got my apps work and all was good. I set the computer aside for the night and went to bed. The next morning I opened the lid and had a message saying the computer rebooted and wanted to know if it should open everything that was opened previously. It then said there was a kernel panic and something to do with ACPI. I then realized that every window that required authorization now asked for a password and I couldn't use TouchID. Strange! I went to settings and clicked on TouchID. My fingerprint was gone (and there were no others). "Okay" I thought, "I'll just set up another." "Sorry, there are no more left and you have to delete the others if you want to add a fingerprint ID", something came up to that effect. There were none and yet it was full? I did all the usual stuff the Apple person recommended - created another user, reset PRAM, SMC, T1, etc. Nothing made any difference so I reinstalled the OS after reformatting the SSD. It came up and the same thing happened. I called Apple again and they ran diagnostics remotely and some recovery session and called back later in the week saying the hardware was defective. By this time I had already packed it up and shipped it back to BH, who willingly took it back. I was going to go for another exchange because 3rd time's the charm, but I'm just gun shy now and BH warned me that 3 exchanges are the max. I don't know if that means I'm just stuck with it or what? I don't want to waste another day with this. Apple you need to get your quality control together. You know how many products I have purchased over the years and this is just unacceptable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another solid performer from Apple Despite all the hoopla, positive and negative, I would simply say this is a solid machine. It replaces a 2013 model that my wife is now using. It's slightly faster day to day, but its real advantage is in applications where it processes data for long periods; while it is initially not faster, it seems to sustain power for video processing and other intensive tasks without slowing or overheating. The USB-C ports are not a big deal if you buy a couple adapters, and they are if you want to use one of the new external SSDs that support them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The perfect computer! I absolute love this computer. Bottom line. Very fast. The Radeon Pro 460 Graphics board really does make a difference. Touch Bar is a nice add-on. I find myself using it more than I thought I would use. I was in doubt about getting the 13 versus the 15. I was afraid the 15 version would be too big. Can't regret a thing about my decision. This 15 new MacBook Pro is much smaller and less bulkier than the old 15 version. It feels like a regular Windows 14 notebook, size-wise. I'm a MacBook user for 5 years now, having owned the previous 15 2011 model and the 13 2013 Retina. This new MacBook is the perfect computer for me. The most impressive thing about it is the improvement in the speakers. They got better in volume, but most important, in sound quality. Very deep bass and general sound clarity. Service from B&H was perfect. They met all my expectations. I'm a B&H customer for 15 years now, and I would absolutely recommend to everyone!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great new MacBook Pro at a great B&H price I gave my daughter my "old" 2014 MacBook Pro, superb machine, so got this one a terrific discount. After reading and speaking with friends who work at Intel, I decided I could save quite a bit with minimal, if any performance compromise compared to the 2017. As many others have said, it's a pain needing to use dongles for "regular" USB and for an SD card reader but it's not as bad as I thought. The trackpad required some getting used to and the keys are different too. There are little things missing like the light that signaled it was charging on the wonderful magnetic connector. The transfer from the old to the new with Apple's Migration Assistant was flawless. Overall, I think I'll like it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Late 2016 15.4 MacBook Pro With Touch Bar Purchase As always, the purchase process was easy and delivery was on time. I upgraded from a 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro. Wow, what a difference. This laptop was very easy to set up, and it is really fast. For the first time, I can run Parallels 13 with Windows 10 installed at a decent speed. All the other programs run very quickly. I wasn't sure whether I would like the Touch Bar but I do. Screen resolution is excellent. And the Black Friday price was very fair. All in all, I am thrilled with this purchase.
