Apple MacBook Pro overview

  • 1Description

Experience the innovative interface of the Touch Bar in the late 2016 space gray Apple 13.3" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar.

The Touch Bar places controls right at your fingertips and adapts to different apps to provide useful functions without having to navigate complex menus or memorize keyboard shortcuts. Replacing the function keys in the top row of the keyboard, the Touch Bar features a Retina-quality display and supports multi-touch input.

The power button has been upgraded with a Touch ID sensor, so you can quickly log into your MacBook Pro using your fingerprint. You can also use Touch ID to make purchases over the web, thanks to Apple Pay. Touch ID enables a quick, accurate reading of your fingerprint and uses sophisticated algorithms to recognize and match it with the Secure Enclave in the Apple T1 chip.

The system features a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor, 16GB of 2133 MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory, a 512GB PCIe-based SSD, four Thunderbolt 3 (USB Type-C) ports, a 46% larger Force Touch trackpad, a keyboard with a 2nd-gen butterfly mechanism, stereo speakers with double the dynamic range of its predecessor as well as improved bass, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.2 wireless technology, and even a 3.5mm headphone jack. macOS Sierra is the installed operating system.

Touch Bar
The Touch Bar replaces the function keys that have long occupied the top of your keyboard with something much more versatile and capable. The multi-touch, Retina-quality display changes automatically based on what you're doing, from showing traditional system controls, such as volume and brightness, to more directly interacting with or browsing through content. Intelligent typing features like emoji and predictive text improve the typing experience, and you'll be able to customize the Touch Bar to fit your needs. The Touch Bar can also adapt to apps, such as Mail, Safari, Messages, and even third-party apps like Adobe Photoshop, so you'll have access to useful functions previously hidden in menus.
Touch ID
A Touch ID sensor has been integrated into the power button, so you can quickly log into your account, even when another user is logged in. You can also use it with Apple Pay to securely purchase things over the web, thanks to macOS Sierra.
Retina Display
The 13.3" Retina Display with a 2560 x 1600 resolution features brighter LED backlighting than its predecessor as well as an increased contrast ratio, delivering deeper blacks and brighter whites. Its larger pixel aperture and variable refresh rate make it more power efficient than previous generations. It also supports the P3 color gamut, which allows for more vibrant colors. This ensures true-to-life pictures with realistically vivid details, which are essential for graphic design, color grading, and editing.
Force Touch Trackpad
The Force Touch trackpad on the 13.3" MacBook Pro is 46% larger than the previous generation. The Force Touch trackpad takes all the capabilities of multi-touch and adds force sensors that detect subtle differences in the amount of downward pressure you apply. This lets you have a deeper connection to your content, bringing more functionality right to your fingertip. It also introduces haptic feedback to MacBook Pro — allowing you not just to see what's happening on the screen, but to feel it. With multi-touch, you can use realistic gestures like swiping or pinching to switch between apps, navigate your content, and get the most out of your desktop space.
Thunderbolt 3
Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes the reversible USB Type-C connector. Doubling the speed of its predecessor, Thunderbolt 3 features a maximum throughput of 40 Gb/s when used with compatible devices. The connector also transmits data via USB 3.1 at up to 10 Gb/s, and dual-bandwidth DisplayPort 1.2 allows you to connect up to two 4K displays simultaneously or one multi-panel 5K display. The Macbook Pro has four ports, with each pair using a dedicated bus.
Thinner & Lighter
The 13.3" MacBook Pro features a redesigned enclosure design and all-metal unibody construction that creates a rigid and dense notebook that is also thin and light. At just 14.9 mm thin, the 13.3" MacBook Pro is 17 percent thinner and has 23 percent less volume than the previous generation. It is also nearly half a pound lighter at just four pounds.
The speakers have been totally redesigned to provide as much as twice the dynamic range and up to 58 percent more volume, with two-and-a-half-times louder bass for maximum boom. Plus, they're connected directly to system power, enabling up to three times more peak power.
macOS Sierra
The MacBook Pro runs macOS Sierra, which features Siri integration, Universal Clipboard, Apple Pay on the web, and memories in Photos.

    Apple MacBook Pro reviews

13.3" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar (Late 2016, Space Gray) is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent machine Weight (3#) is why I bought this, and it does not disappoint. It is also a joy to use, and I like the new touchbar - If Apple makes a keyboard with one for my iMac, I'll buy it. The fingerprint unlocking is a real timesaver, and particularly valuable on a laptop you don't want sitting around with long times before sleep. Battery life is less than advertised but then I haven't used conservative settings either. Do buy the full range of USB-C adapters you need, to reduce frustration. I miss the magnetic power cord, and bought a non-Apple USB-C one, but returned it because it didn't function consistently. It is handy to be able to have the power cord on either side of the computer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Laptop But Pricey For What It Is This is definitely an improvement from previous MacBook Pro's as it's much thinner and sleeker than it's predecessors. The only reason I can't give it five stars is because I think the price point is a bit steep compared to similar laptops on the market. That being said, this is by far the best MacBook Pro yet to come out. The screen is very crisp and colors are vibrant. I tested having multiple applications running at once and there were no issues with performance or speed. Video playback is sharp and responsive. While I haven't used the TouchBar often, it does come in handy for video scrubbing and quick Safari navigation. I love being able to unlock the computer using TouchID or my AppleWatch and Handoff seems to work seamlessly between the MacBook Pro, my iPhone and iPad. As other reviews have mentioned, be prepared to spend money on adapters. The easiest solution is to by a standard powered USB hub and then just get one USB to USB-C adapter to connect it to the new port. That way, all your older USB devices can still be used without having to buy several adapters. I've heard reports of second monitors not working with the new MacBook Pro's using a USB-C adapter, however, my ASUS monitor powers up just fine when connected as a second monitor.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great MacBook I just received this brand new shiny beast today! I am already in love with it. The keyboard is excellent and I can type really fast on it, the SSD is out of this world fast, and it is one sexy machine. Thanks to B&H Photo, I was able to get a great laptop and even got a price match from the Apple EDU Store! (Note: you have to be part of the B&H EDU Advantage Program).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Dig The Macbook and Surprisingly the Touchbar! I bought this MacBook Pro to replace my 2011 Macbook Air and I really dig it. The speed and screen detail are both great. I wasn't sure about the touchbar - I thought I wouldn't use it but after a few weeks in, I really dig it. My favorite is Transport mode while tracking/recording in Logic Pro- very cool. My one negative on the touchbar is the 'esc' button- I can't turn it off and the way I rest my hands I end up hitting it often. Not a huge deal, maybe just need smaller hands. I like the size, it's the same screen size as my Macbook Air but smaller overall. Although a bit heavier (not anything that would deter me from buying again). Overall, a great computer and I hope to keep it as long as I did the 2011 Air.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeded My Expectations I needed another Mac so I tried the one with the Touch Bar. I thought this was a gimmick but I really love the touch bar. It changes within apps that support it and changed multi touch for different functions. Quite hand in MS Office for Mac and other apps. The USB-C is nice once you get used to it. I wish it had a breakaway power connector for charging. You can get aftermarket versions but many don't work because of the 61 watt power requirement. The entire package is better than ever. Well done Apple.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pleased. Light, responsive, great display. very quick. installed updates and products while not on charger, still had plenty of power to make it thru a day. keyboard is fine (read some reviews saying it was odd). Display is wonderful (i skipped a generation of macbook pro, so this is vast improvement). Facebook seems to be a power hog. Downside so far: screen does not always come on when opening screen. One day it took extra 10 minutes to get it going - did not like sunrise as i had it pointed towards window. Hope there is an OS fix for this. Will probably get support for it in case a persistent issue. The lightest, fastest mac i've owned, haul it all over the place. got 512M memory so it could be in use a long time and handle many apps at same time. fingerprint reader very fast and reliable (lots faster and more reliable than my iphone 5s)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MacBook Pro, 13 as expected A senior, average or below on tech knowledge. The mbp starts up fast and stays that way through all I call on it to do; budget, email, Lightroom, vidoes and editing. Happy with purchase.
