Olympus STF-8 Reviews

Very good but…

This is an almost perfect product. The flashes are small and, with the included diffusers, deliver a very good lighting of macro subjects. The flashes are not very powerful but are very close to the subject by construction, so correct lighting is not an issue. The things works like a charm with my Panasonic body, everything is functional. I removed one star because of the assembly of the flashes to the bearing plate in front of the lens. This is done using a bolt with a tiny head whose correct tightening is difficult (and when correctly tightened, the removal of the flashes is difficult). This could probably be resolved in DYI but it is a pity to have this issue on a device that is very well designed on all other aspects.

The adjustability of the flash units and their output provides lots of creative possibilities.

With this be a good lighting system to uses on a copystand to digitize old photos / drawing / paintings?
Asked by: Thomas
The Olympus STF-8 Twin Flash is really for macro shots—to be used with a macro lens. If you use this on a copy stand to photograph flat art, you'd need to position the lights further away. Otherwise, you would get glare on the photos.

Flash will not fire on the OM D I mark II. Is there a setting buried in the menus that has to be changed?
Asked by: carole
Do you have batteries installed correctly? Does the unit turn on? When you press the ON/OFF button on the controller, the green light should turn on and the orange Charge light should also turn on if the flash is charged. Also, make sure that the RC Mode in the camera menu (Shooting Menu 2) is OFF.

Unfortunately, no, it is not. I contacted Olympus America and they state that the diffusers included in the Olympus STF-8 Twin Flash are not available as a separate replacement accessory.

New to flash here. What is the maximum possible camera to subject distance for adequate illumination?
Asked by: Donna
Twin flashes are not made for covering great distances. They are mainly made for macro photography, extreme close ups of things such as flowers, bugs, and bugs on flowers. As a rough estimate the Olympus STF-8 Twin flash should be fine in a range up to 8-10 feet at the most. If you are looking for more in a distance range up to 40-50 feet, the Olympus FL-900R would be a better option. Please take a look at the following link: https://bhpho.to/2h05lsh
