The Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter from Apple converts a Thunderbolt 3 port on a system to a Thunderbolt 2 port, letting you use previous-generation devices on your new Thunderbolt 3 computer. This adapter supports external storage drives as well as displays. With a bi-directional design, you can connect a Thunderbolt 3 mobile device to a Thunderbolt 2 computer, using an optional Thunderbolt 2 cable. Additionally, Thunderbolt 3 is a hardware interface that utilizes a USB-C connector, which offers a reversible design.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cable Works I use this to interface my new Focusrite Clarett 2Pre (Thunderbolt 2) to my new 2016 MacBook Pro (Thunderbolt 3) for audio processing. I am not sure if this is an active or passive adapter but it works for my purposes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used to connect to my Thunderbolt 3 harddrive I used this for my 24TB Thunderbolt 3 harddrive to connect to my Thunderbolt 2 iMac. All is well so far!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Will NOT Work! Unfortunately I have to return this and get the StarTech version because this adapter does not work with a PC. Running windows 10. Motherboard has fully supported, native thunderbolt 3 but the adapter won’t pass signal. Using a PreSonus Quantum TB2 interface. Presonus recommends the star tech as I just found out. Stupid adapter.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Doesn't do what it needs to do I needed this to do one of two thing. 1) Connect a monitor (Doesn't work with minidisplayport) 2) Connect Thunderbolt 2 Blackmagic Shuttle to the Thunderbolt 3 port (Doesn't work) In both cases it just simply doesn't work. Sad excuse for an adapter.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Yes it works but I hate that you need it. Also it doesnt work reverse. So you can't plug this in to a USB c external drive and then attach that to your mac pro. Because it needs to be powered from the USB C side. Unfortunate!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from THIS MIGHT NOT BE WHAT YOU THINK IT IS... This product should be taken off the market immediately. It is literally just for thunderbolt, No other protocols are allowed. That means no mini display port monitors! It would with Thunderbolt 1 and 2 monitors but the photo on the box is vague and doesn't specify this at all. Shame on you Apple for not being more clear!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Well for my Application I use my 2017 iMac for music composition and recording. I wanted to connect a fast USB 3.0/Lightning hard drive to be online with the iMac all the time to use as a dedicated hard drive for music recording. I have a USB audio interface and MIDI keyboard controller connected all the time to the iMac and I found that the four iMac USB host ports were completely occupied when doing a Time Machine backup to another USB 3.0 external hard drive, so I wanted to move my dedicated music hard drive (G-Technology G Drive Mobile 1 TB USB 3.0/Lightning drive) to a Lightning 3 port on the iMac. I wanted to utilize a Lightning 3 port and also to free up a USB 3.0 host port. The Apple Thunderbolt 3 Male to Thunderbolt 2 Female Adapter allows me to do just that. The adapter powers the Lightning drive and provides fast I/O with no fuss.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I ordered the wrong thing apparently... I have two external thunderbolt 2 monitors I wanted to link to my new 2017 iMac with the thunderbolt 3 ports. I thought a couple of these items would be the solution, but they did not work. Apparently a couple of CHOETECH USB-C to DisplayPort Adapter Cables (4Kx2K@60Hz) were what I needed instead. Unfortunately this item is not returnable, hence my low star rating. I think it would be helpful if the description was clearer about that for novices like me.
