Google Home overview

  • 1Description

With integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, voice recognition, and home automation support, the Google Home wireless speaker will connect to your wireless network to provide control of, and access to, virtually all of your smart devices. It can play music, check the weather and traffic, tell you sports scores, control your smart home equipment, and more. Using far-field voice recognition technology and the Google Assistant, the built-in microphone allows the Google Home to recognize your voice and perform the requested task in an instant.

You can control the Google Home by voice, with the Google Home app, or using the touch surface on top of the unit. Voice control can be disabled with the rear-mounted mute button. At only 3.79" wide and 5.62" tall, the Google Home is designed to fit nearly anywhere in most décors. To further blend into your home, the slate fabric base is interchangeable with six separately available colors.

Note: The Google Home can only be set up with an Android or iOS device; it can't be set up via a computer. The Google Assistant on Google Home is not available in all languages. Not all functions are available in all areas. Please see the manufacturer's website for more info.

Command Your Audio
A simple voice request triggers the Google Home to play music, podcasts, or radio from services like Google Play Music, Spotify, YouTube Music, Pandora, and TuneIn.
Get Answers from Google
Thanks to Google's history in search, the Google Home is ready for your questions. Get real-time answers, including the latest on weather, traffic, finance, sports, local businesses, and more.
Plan to Do More
With your permission, the Google Home will learn about you and get personal. It can retrieve your flight information, set alarms and timers, and tell you about the traffic on your way to work.
Voice-Control Your Smart Devices
The Google Home connects with smart devices like Chromecast, Nest, and Philips Hue, so you can use your voice to set the perfect temperature or turn down the lights.
Far-Field Voice Recognition
Far-field microphones and natural language processing help ensure that the Google Home hears you reliably.
Multi-Room Capability
Multiple Google Home devices can be grouped together to enjoy the same content in every room.
Touch Controls
The top touch surface gives you total control, and a mute button lets you put the Google Home's microphones on standby. Tap the top surface once to pause or stop audio, timers, alarms, and responses. Swipe clockwise to turn the volume up or counterclockwise to turn it down. Long-press the touch panel to trigger the Google Assistant. Press the mute button on the back to keep the Google Assistant from being triggered, even if you say "Ok Google."
Hi-Fi Speaker
The integrated high-excursion speaker is designed to deliver crystal-clear highs and rich bass.
Style Your Home
With bases separately available in seven colors, you can make the Google Home fit with nearly any space and décor. Just twist and pull off the one you don't want to replace it with the base of your chosen color.
Set Up in Three Steps
Plug the power cable into the Google Home, plug it into a wall socket, then download and run the Google Home app on your compatible phone or tablet.
Basic Controls and Indicators
Four colored lights indicate whether the unit is active. The entire top is a touch surface with a built-in microphone. The rear of the unit features a microphone on/off button and a power status light.
Explore the Google Home App
The Google Home app is your one-stop destination to discover all of the Google Home's content and features. It lets you find the latest features, tips, and offers; control settings like your default music provider or your location; and link compatible devices, such as smart lights, thermostats, and Chromecast devices.
Decide When the Google Home Listens
You have total control over when you want Google Home to respond to your voice commands. Its light states tell you the status of your device when you say, "Ok Google."
  • No Lights: Waiting to hear the "Ok Google" hotword.
  • Dots Animate: Listening for your request and ready to help.
  • Four Red Dots: Voice control is deactivated.
Multi-User Capable
Up to six people can connect their account to one Google Home, so when you ask your Google Assistant for help, it can distinguish your voice from that of other family members, so you can hear your own personal playlists, commute times, schedule, and more.

    Google Home reviews

Home (White Slate) is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 249.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Google Home has a lot of catching up to do!! Google Home can't yet compare to Amazon's Echo. I wanted to try it and compare the two. Alexa has waaay more commands and things that she can do. Also Amazon's Alexa sounds more human. GH still sounds like a computer voice. Home needs a ton more updates before it reaches the level of Echo. I do however like the way Google Home can access your television set and operate the Netflix app (by way of ChromeCast of course) and other home devices. All in all it's a nice device that responds to basic commands and can link to your preferred music streaming accounts i.e. Spotify, Youtube Music, and Pandora etc. I would return it but I'm hopeful that Google will surely expand its capabilities in the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great if you're lazy I primarily use this thing to control my lights and thermostat. I use to have to reach for my phone. But not anymore. Every now and then I ask it questions. It's pretty handy. Can't wait till they add the upcoming calling feature. I may never have to touch my phone again. My one gripe might be it doesn't really get series right. I say, Okay Google, watch Stranger Things on TV. It will play season one, episode one. Would be nicer if it picked up where I left off. Works great for movies though if you have a Chromecast. Plays music and movies without lifting a finger. Better when you pair it with multiple devices. The more it can control the more use you'll get out of it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Shame on Google Google did not go out of their way to inform buyers that this home product is NOT a stand alone system. A smart phone or smart tablet are required in order to work, Since most new smart phones come with this same feature, WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS THING? ALSO... I didn't find out about this until I downloaded the Home application where is said it will not work with a home computer or laptop. What is really scary is that application located my old HTC phone and said it was not compatible and this phone was NOT TURNED ON. How did it find this? Makes me think this unit is really a product of homeland security. Just saying.....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my Google Home My wife and I both love the Google Home. Not only are we having fun with it, but it really is a product that can make your life a little less complicated. We purchased the product from B&H and I really can't say enough good things about them. I have bought from them in the past (mostly photo equipment) and they continue to be an excellent and reliable online retailer. The Google Home I ordered got here in record time. If it had gotten here sooner, it would have been here before I ordered it. Keep up the good work guys.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Google Home is almost perfect I watched the Google presentation on the Home in November, and I've been itching to get one ever since. The speaker clarity is fantastic, the response time is incredible, and the functionality is amazing. The only reason I didn't give this a 5 star rating is because the device is not ready to be used in Canada. Accessing Netflix using the Home will only work if the content is common to both the US & Canada. The Home, even though it is configured to be 'in Canada' still tries to use US Netflix content, but it cannot be played here. I'm very certain that a fix will be released, once the device is officially released for Canada.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun gadget... the real magic should be coming I rated this 5 stars because I did my homework and knew what the existing limitations would be. While google improves the software behind the Assistant that powers this device, the mic is sharp and pics up my voice from a surprising distance. The speakers themselves are also more the adequate to fill a small room with rich sound. I have Sonos throughout my home and the speaker is not totally comparable but it's still good and better then a bluetooth solution. There's also enough amplification that at full volume, this little unit cranks. Beware to those that think a that Assistant is a prime time personal assistant that is going to make your life notably easier. I believe it's coming but it's not there yet. You can't add contacts to your calendar or create new calendar appointments. These two features are really the framework behind what a real personal assistant can do and I'm hoping, will do. You can set an alarm or a timer, you can ask it Goolge-esque questions when you're having a debate and obviously summon it to control other IoT compatible devices you may already have. It works well with IFTTT and I like the Good Morning feature which gives you a run down of your day from appointments to weather and traffic conditions to work as well as news headlines (partially customizable). For the price, this is a low risk toy that I think has some great upside. I will say that it is better then Echo's Alexa.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very happy so far I'm liking this unit so far. I particularly appreciate the 'Tell me about my day' feature. I also use it to voice control my TV through the Harmony hub (via IFTTT). My next move will be to get smart WiFi lightbulbs. Thankfully I haven't had the mic issue that some people have reported. I occasionally do have to repeat a command but I don't need to speak very loudly. The current feature list is not very long but I'm excited about the new partnerships that Google announced recently. This was my 1st purchase through B&H and I was very pleased. I'm in Canada and they do a good job of simplifying the order and shipping process. Shipping was quick and the price was unbeatable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting but needs more functionality We don’t have many smart home devices yet but we will likely use it with smart plugs to control various lamps around the place. It is usefully responsive and when it isn’t we can usually figure out the way to reask the question to get the answer we are looking for. I think it is smarter and more flexible than its competitors and I hope they continue to push the envelope and contextual learning improves. I want to be able to call it whatever I want to activate it, like maybe “Old Bessie”. It does acknowledge its failure to play Netflix on the high-end Sony TV with Chromecast built in, but it’s infuriating given the software core is supplied by Google. I acknowledge it has privacy concerns and I am taking the risk to get the benefits and hoping the negative possibilities don’t pose a serious risk.
