A 32GB USB flash drive/stick will work fine. The manufacturer does not list the maximum size.

With CD playback, it is important to make sure the unit is on a level surface. Also make sure the discs are clean and shiny on the bottom. A micro fiber lens cloth can be used to clean them if needed. Obviously if the discs are scratched, they may not play. My tape gets stuck in the player why and what can be done?
If the cassette tapes are getting old, they could be shedding film residue along the tape path. They've reached their end of life cycle. If they are wound loose, they can pull out of the case. You can FWD or RWD the full length to see if that helps. Also, you can clean the transport area gently with a cotton swab and isopropyl alcohol.
