Bright, Cheap, Noisy and Inaccurate Color

If you need a bright, cheap, light and don't care about much else, this light is a good option. If you are looking for a light that you can use in a professional setting, spend a little more and you'll be thankful you didn't waste your money on this. The color just isn't accurate enough to be considered high CRI/TLCI (I would like to see someone give it a color meter reading as it is doubtfully that it has a CRI as high as is stated). It has a green spike that is noticeable by eye, more so in camera and will not match higher quality units. The cooling fan does not take into account the needs of any job that would be using sound. The fan is noisy enough to be picked up by professional mics. It is also not consistent and goes on and off intermittently. The mount is awkward, and without expensive hardware workarounds, it is loosely held to stands and does not give safe tilting options. In summery, there was a time when a light with this much output at this price would be worth the inconveniences. With many better options out there now, this just isn't worth it.

Great cheap video light!

I now have two of these lights and I'm having fun figuring out the best way to use them. I've run each of them for a one-hour burn-in and so far they are working fine. They are very bright and far smaller than the old CFL systems that I used to use when I needed continuous light. The tiny cooling fan apparently does the job as they don't get hot, just mildly warm. I'm not going to mess around with batteries, so I can't tell you how long they last. I'm using the power supply that you order separately. These are oddball power supplies that are apparently only made by one company in China. I got one through Hong Kong when B&H didn't have them in stock and I paid a bit more than the B&H price. If you really like these lights, it might be good to pick up a spare while you can. These units have elaborate wireless control features that I never intend to use, but you might. A remote control is included and you can get an app to control them with your phone. I was pretty surprised when I had both units running and found that they automatically communicate with each other. When I change the brightness or color balance on one, the other one matches it. I need to figure out how to turn that off as I don't always want them to be the same power. The brief operations manual (a single sheet) that comes with these lights gives you some clues. The translation is poor like it is with all Yongnuo products, so you need to have some pioneer spirit. I wish that Yongnuo would make a stripped down version of this product without all the wireless and battery capabilities, but I'm OK just ignoring those features. The lights come in sturdy cardboard boxes with plastic trays inside that will function as nice storage containers. I picked up a couple of Neewer tilting umbrella adapters to use with the Yongnuo YN 1200s. They work, but are not very elegant - the large thumbscrew that is just below the light bumps into the light as you try to tighten it. Also, I found that reflective umbrellas don't work very well. You lose a lot of brightness, partly due to the fact that you can't get the attached barn doors completely out of the way. Also the body of the unit simply blocks a lot of the light that comes off the umbrella. I think I might try a shoot-through umbrella next, as the light could use a little softening for my kind of work. Anyway, these are great units for beginning videographers or even still photographers who want a fairly compact, quite bright, continuous light source. I'm not sure how advanced professionals will view these. I don't think they're built to withstand much abuse, but they could come in handy if you need to occasionally add some light to your normal setup.

question

Will these mount on a standard light stand? And how about tilting, will these tilt up or down?
Asked by: Dean
The mount that comes with the light does slip over a 5/8 stud on a light stand. However, there is no way to lock it down or tilt up/down. A more suitable adapter you can add is the Impact Swivel Umbrella Adapter B&H # IMCA108 which offers those features.
