Zoom FRC-8 Overview

Designed for the location sound recordist, the F-Control from Zoom is a mixing control surface designed for the F8n, F8, F6, and F4 multitrack field recorders. It creates a complete and professional audio rig that offers a broad spectrum of creative possibilities with complete control over sound design and mixing.

The interface provides nine 60mm faders (eight + Master) and hands-on input/output control for trim, pan, and track arming. Monitoring channel and output levels is simple with 12-segment LED meters, three user-programmable buttons, and a dedicated timecode button.

Additional controls include Track Scene Edit buttons which provide shortcut commands to Track Name, Scene Increment, Scene Name, Notes, and False Take. The unit connects to the F8/F4 recorder via USB for a seamless and uncluttered setup, while an additional USB port lets you connect an external keyboard to quickly enter metadata while out in the field. An included 1/4" stereo cable connects the F8/F4 phone out to F-Control's phone in, so you can monitor audio via F-Control's headphone jack.

The durable metal chassis is robust enough to go anywhere, and yet small and light enough to fit into gear bags and backpacks. The F-Control can be powered by an optional DC power supply or via the included four AA batteries. Additionally, the unit can be USB-powered when using the F4 (not available with the F8). The F-Control ships with a stereo audio cable and a USB cable.

A Definite Improvement

The Zoom F-Control makes using my F8 much easier. It allows adjustments that are, otherwise, a little finicky when accessing the little knobs on the F8 itself, with my fat fingers.

Using the F-control enables the operation of the F8n a lot quicker. It is a great accessory which makes the f8 a fantastic powerful little mixer on a cart set-up. Try it and you'll love it. However, I'd like it even more if Zoom could add a one-way interrupt comm feature so the mixer can talk to the boom op. when necessary. Any built-in onboard mic, or a flushed mounted XLR mic Jack would do. Also, adding a foldable flip stand underneath the bottom front of the F8n wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I do like this product a lot. It fits perfectly in the same bag as my F8. Nice features. Well built. It gets 4 stars because the trims are small and the overall build needs some refining for the price. BUT, again I am very happy with it. It has made my life much easier.

F-Control - well worth the money.

F- Control - A must for Zoom F-8 and F-4 users. Makes everything easier to do. Huge value-- easy setup -- buy Panasonic Eneloop pro batteries with charger for long time use. Also headphone jack in the F-Control improves sound while recording...so use that jack.

I've owned the F8n for several months now and I am quite happy with its performance.  The knobs are small, manageable but small.  I knew I had an 8 channel symphony performance to live mix and record coming up and made the decision to purchase the F-control.   While I may have been able to get through the job without it I am super pleased that I had the F-control at hand (so to speak).   Worked exactly like I expected. question

why there is no power adapter for it ?
Asked by: Ahmed a.
The FRC-8 has the same 4-pin Hirose power connector as the F8 and similar Sound Devices recorders. I use a Sound Devices power supply with the Hirose connector in preference to the barrel connector which comes with the F8. It's more robust and not likely to come dislodged accidentally.
