Zoom FRC-8 Overview

  • 1Description

Designed for the location sound recordist, the F-Control from Zoom is a mixing control surface designed for the F8n, F8, F6, and F4 multitrack field recorders. It creates a complete and professional audio rig that offers a broad spectrum of creative possibilities with complete control over sound design and mixing.

The interface provides nine 60mm faders (eight + Master) and hands-on input/output control for trim, pan, and track arming. Monitoring channel and output levels is simple with 12-segment LED meters, three user-programmable buttons, and a dedicated timecode button.

Additional controls include Track Scene Edit buttons which provide shortcut commands to Track Name, Scene Increment, Scene Name, Notes, and False Take. The unit connects to the F8/F4 recorder via USB for a seamless and uncluttered setup, while an additional USB port lets you connect an external keyboard to quickly enter metadata while out in the field. An included 1/4" stereo cable connects the F8/F4 phone out to F-Control's phone in, so you can monitor audio via F-Control's headphone jack.

The durable metal chassis is robust enough to go anywhere, and yet small and light enough to fit into gear bags and backpacks. The F-Control can be powered by an optional DC power supply or via the included four AA batteries. Additionally, the unit can be USB-powered when using the F4 (not available with the F8). The F-Control ships with a stereo audio cable and a USB cable.

    Zoom FRC-8 Reviews

    F-Control for F8n, F8, F6, and F4 Multitrack Field Recorders is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Zoom F-Control is an essential addition to the F8 I am very pleased with the Zoom F-Control, it works as intended very well. The faders are very smooth although I would have liked to see some rubber dust protection of the fader slots. I am glad that Zoom added another 6dB of gain in the headphone amplifier as the headphone level from the F8 is low in noisy environments. Others have complained about colouration in the headphone amplifier in the F8, I have measured the frequency response with the NTI Minirator and Minilyser and found that the response is flat within one quarter of a dB so there is no colouration at all just a lack of drive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Using the F-control enables the operation of the F8n a lot quicker. It is a great accessory which makes the f8 a fantastic powerful little mixer on a cart set-up. Try it and you'll love it. However, I'd like it even more if Zoom could add a one-way interrupt comm feature so the mixer can talk to the boom op. when necessary. Any built-in onboard mic, or a flushed mounted XLR mic Jack would do. Also, adding a foldable flip stand underneath the bottom front of the F8n wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great product from ZOOM! It's a little excessive for bag gigs, but a huge help for interviews or cart shows! I wish the F8 could phantom power it, but AA's seem to last a really long time, and I have plenty of rechargeables. The price is amazing and the quality is pro, all the way (in spite of what the Zoom haters would have you believe.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! Not for running & gunning with a shoulder bag, but a must have if you're working from a sound cart. Using a real keyboard with it is great. Battery usage not huge, but I was disappointed that it can't be USB-powered from the F8 when it can be powered from the F4. Don't know why that is...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from F-Control - well worth the money. F- Control - A must for Zoom F-8 and F-4 users. Makes everything easier to do. Huge value-- easy setup -- buy Panasonic Eneloop pro batteries with charger for long time use. Also headphone jack in the F-Control improves sound while recording...so use that jack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect solution for f8 when you need to live mix Works with wireless keyboards like logitech with wireless dongles, 4 AA battery last about 4 to 5 hours, faders are very smooth, set up is cake and is built well and light weight. i have mixed one narrative short on it and will not go back to just the zoom when i need to have a post fade mix for production, the knobs on the f8 dont cut it and this works great. high recommended if you are laving more that one person to eliminate mic bleed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from F controller for my F 4 & F 8 Awsome. works on either unit. a must have. Loving it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Product I do like this product a lot. It fits perfectly in the same bag as my F8. Nice features. Well built. It gets 4 stars because the trims are small and the overall build needs some refining for the price. BUT, again I am very happy with it. It has made my life much easier.

What can the F-Control do that the F8 Control iOS ...

What can the F-Control do that the F8 Control iOS app does not already offer?
    Asked by: Craig
Thats a fine question. Off the top of my head, Headphone amplifier is a big one, but the biggest difference is just physical controls. I have both the IOS app and the F-Control and I WAY prefer the F-Control. If nothing else, it doesn't go to sleep, doesn't lose its wireless connection, doesn't get interrupted by texts or calls, can take a beating, etc. I'm sure there are other benefits as well, but I don't have either in front of me right now. The F-Control is worth the cost if you are doing any kind of regular work with your F8 or F4

Can I use the zoom app in my Ipad, like a monitor, and control my Zoom F8 with the Zoom F-Control?
    Asked by: Sebastian L.
Hi Sebastian,I have not tried to use the I-Pad App at the same time as the F-Control as I do not use an I-Pad. The zoom F-Control works extremely well and I highly recomend it.
