Vello BG-C14 overview

  • 1Description

The Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip is designed for use with a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR Camera. It can accommodate up to two LP-E6 or LP-E6N batteries, allowing you to effectively double your shooting time. Additionally, it provides improved handling and control while the camera is used in the portrait orientation.

Installation is easily accomplished by first removing the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR's camera battery chamber cover and fitting the battery grip into the camera. To help ensure that the cover is not misplaced or lost, the BG-C14 battery grip features an integrated battery chamber cover holder. Turning the battery grip's attachment wheel rotates and threads its 1/4"-20 mount directly into the camera's accessory thread, creating a secure and reliable connection.

Vertical position controls along the battery grip include a shutter-release button, an AF area section button, an AF point selection button, an AF start button, an AE lock button, a multi-controller button, a multi-function button, and a main dial. To prevent the camera's shutter from being accidentally released or exposure settings from being unintentionally applied while photographing in the landscape orientation, an on/off switch allows the BG-C14 battery grip's controls to be disabled even while the camera continues to draw power from the installed batteries.

Alternatively, the battery grip can deliver uninterrupted power to a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR with a separately-available Canon ACK-E6 AC Adapter Kit. A built-in outlet along the rear of the BG-C14 battery grip allows it to seamlessly integrate with the ACK-E6 AC adapter kit's DC coupler power cord.

It addition to its non-slip surface, the battery grip's built-in strap eyelet can be used to install a separately-available hand strap to further ensure that a connected camera stays firmly in hand. For direct attachment to accessories such as a tripod head or straps that feature 1/4"-20 mounts, the underside of the BG-C14 battery grip includes a 1/4"-20 female accessory thread.

    Vello BG-C14 reviews

BG-C14 Battery Grip for Canon 5D Mark IV DSLR Camera is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 22.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great alternative to the OEM model After reading reviews on the Canon's flimsy battery tray, I decided to try the Vello as I have had good experiences with other products from this manufacturer. After receiving this, it have been installed on one of my 5D's constantly. The fit and quality are extremely high. The battery tray is also well made and sturdy. All functions and buttons are placed as they are on the camera making it very user friendly and balanced in portrait mode. I also use the Spider Pro system and have not had any concerns.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Perfectly acceptable product. I also have the Canon BG-F11 battery grip for my Mk III. Comparing the two, there is really very little difference. Controls identical, quality to present (I have only been actively using it for several weeks) seems the equivalent. The only noticeable difference is the material of the hand grip: Canon is harder material and semi gloss; Vello softer (hence better grip) and matte, but more susceptible to dirt and dust. Purely personal preference. Given how similar they are (and assuming the Vello product holds up), I would not hesitate to purchase another, especially if they are placed on sale by B & H, allowing you to purchase for a fraction of the Canon price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fits, works well. It fits. It matches. It works well. The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because it is not weather sealed like the Canon version. To be fair, it isn't advertised as such, but neither is there a disclaimer or advisory about that. If you can live without that weather sealing, or take precautions when in a environment that may require it, this thing is a bargain! If you are doing mostly nature/documentary or field type stuff you may be better off with the Canon version just for that weather sealing, but that's the $$$ trade off for this version!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from GOOD FOR NON-PRO USE, OTHERWISE PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT I purchased this BG, it's good for the price and benefits. - BUT let me start with this point: If you spent $3,000+ on a DSLR, then the Original Canon Battery Grip which is around $300 is the right choice. WHY? Because it is Weather Sealed. That's the MAIN reason. The build quality is not so much better than the Vello, which is a very good). Canon Original Battery Grips (all of them) have a MAJOR ISSUE: The bottom wheel is made of plastic with an insert of metal which makes the force with the metal thread. THAT MEANS: if you put excessive force on it, you may break it, or lock it. I did!!... so lesson learned... I got my Canon BG stuck to the camera, without chance of getting it off. The Official Canon Service can do it, but since I live outside U.S. I had to find the way to do it myself.. Canon could spend few extra bucks on a METALLIC Bottom wheel, but they still made it of plastic, since years ago... ABOUT THE VELLO Battery Grip: It's good for the price. It's very well made. Not as good as Canon's, sure. But the inside is not "only" plastic as many people wrote. It has a metallic structure inside where the threading screw goes. So the mounting screw and mounting hole (for the tripod) are not in plastic surround, but in a metallic structure (that was my main concern.. so I inspected it carefully when I purchased it). Although, I would NOT mount the 5D4 + very big lens on a tripod with the BG on the 5D4, unless the mounting point is on the Lens Shoe. Let's take precautions, better than lamentations. ABOUT THE BLACK PLASTIC finish of the Vello: It's not so matte like previous versions (e.g. for 5D3 and 70D -which I also own), and it's smoother to the touch, so it looks a bit more "plastic", but it doesn't mean it is in fact more "plastic". (Canon has a better finish, matching the camera with a rubberized-like overall) Sadly, it doesn't match so well with the 5D4 finish, as it did with the 5D3 (and as it does with the 70D). But that's just a cosmetic matter (I know.. I wish it looked as the Canon BG too) LET'S SPEAK FRANKLY, if you spent on such a high-end DSLR, and you NEED the Battery Grip for DAILY USE, OR to TRAVEL with it, you SHOULD (even must) buy the Original Canon BG, to get WEATHER SEALING (ESSENTIAL TO AVOID MOISTURE GETTING INSIDE THE CAMERA), and somewhat higher level of build quality. IF YOU ONLY need the Battery Grip for occasional use (when there is NO NEED TO PROTECT FROM THE ELEMENTS), then the Vello should work fine. I found myself that I never ever used the Original BG on my Canon 5D3... (the stuck one was with the 5D2) So, when upgraded to the 5D4, I chose not to spend extra $300 for something I wouldn't use. IF you go to Snow/Sand/Jungle/Desert/etc... it is always better to not have a Battery Grip attached, because it is a WEAK POINT. I know, you get more battery life, but it could be at a high cost if Weather Sealing fails... So I use my 5D4 without the BG on those Hard-Elements scenarios. In "normal" conditions, I have no matter using the Vello BG occasionally for better grip and extra battery life. FOR VIDEO: IF you mount on Tripod, then it is NOT good idea to use ANY battery grip. The higher is the Camera, the more vibrations/shakes it will get, even more if you use a Follow Focus... Forget it! - Again, if you need the BG for DAILY use or Travelling to non-friendly environments, then buy the Original one designed for the $3,000 camera you purchased. Be coherent with your investment.. Hope this helps ;) Cheers!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really nice grip, but no optional tray for AA batteries I use other battery grips on other Canon cameras and found that the BG-C14 grip works really well. My only complaint is that it does not come with a backup insert tray for regular non-rechargeable AA batteries as do other grips. When traveling, it's always nice to have the option of using regular AA batteries especially when you can't re-charge your camera batteries for one reason or another.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK The good: Grip is well made and fits well. The bad: Not sure if I got a defective one or what but I have never encountered this before. When I put the grip and turn it ON, the multicontroller on my 5D IV (NOT the multicontroller on the grip) starts acting very strange. It becomes very sensitive and a little touch to it causes movement immediately in the menus and whatever you use the multicontroller for. I use the multicontroller on the body a lot and this is not acceptable. I returned this grip and bought the Canon brand grip and I didn't experience the same bad behavior. So I don't know if I got a defective Vello grip or that's just the way it behaves. So if you never use the multicontroller on the body, then this might not be an issue for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must-have accessory for the Canon 5D Mark IV As much as I like working with my Canon 5D Mark IV, I still have moments of annoyance particularly when it comes to things like dead batteries. I don’t like having to stop what I’m doing mid-thought to swap out batteries and I really don’t like realizing the morning of a shoot that I neglected to charge the batteries the night before. When I was working with my Canon 70D, I found a wonderful accessory that gave me the option to use more than one battery at a time with the camera. Fortunately, camera accessory designer, Vello, also provides the same type of device for the 5D Mark IV. The BG-C14 Battery Grip is specially designed to work with my Canon and will give me the extra power I need. DETAILS The Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip accepts up to two Canon LP-E6 or LP-E6N rechargeable batteries within its casing so that it will effectively double your battery power and shooting time. In addition to the extra battery life, the grip provides you with easy to use control functions for the camera. There is a shutter release button, AF area and AF point selection, AF start and AE lock buttons, multi-controller, and multi-function buttons as well as the main dial. The grip isn’t just a way to have more power; it’s also a better way to control the camera’s main functions. The bottom of the grip will accommodate tripods with a 1/4-inch threaded socket. TheVello BG-C14 Battery Grip ships with a contact cap and a battery tray, which slides into the base of the grip. Some of its other valuable features include: Non-slip Grip:A rubber non-slip grip enables enhanced handling when shooting in portrait orientation, even with cold hands. On/Off Switch:This switch deactivates the grip’s control buttons and dials as well as the shutter release button without deactivating the batteries installed in the BG-C14. It’s perfect for preventing accidental activation while shooting in landscape orientation or video when you don’t need the buttons but you do need the extra power. Camera Battery Chamber Cover Holder:A dedicated compartment for your camera’s battery chamber cover provides convenient storage and prevents loss when you’re shooting with the BG-C14. Strap Mount:The BG-C14 is equipped with a built-in strap mount that makes it easy to attach a handgrip to protect against drops. USER EXPERIENCE The first thing I noticed about theVello BG-C14 Battery Grip was its look. Vello did a really nice job with this device as it blends in nicely with the Canon 5D Mark IV. It has the same rubberized material that covers parts of the camera so it really matches well. The grip installs easily. There is a 1/4-inch threaded screw that mounts into the bottom of the camera. The really nice feature about this mounting piece is that Vello included a dial mechanism that allows you to tighten the screw on the bottom of the camera without having to physically turn the camera around like you do with some mounts. The beauty of this particular product is that it allows you to still use other specialized mounts on the bottom of the grip thanks to the 1/4-inch threaded accessory socket on the bottom of the grip. Something new with the Canon 5D Mark IV is the addition of the multi-controller joystick that has not previously been on any of the 5D cameras. The battery grip gives you the same controls via the grip for easy shooting. The shutter button placement is ideal for portrait shots. When adding the battery grip to my Canon 5D Mark IV it makes the camera feel like I’m holding aCanon EOS-1D X Mark II. I personally don’t find the extra weight a bother but I could see how it could be tiresome while working an all-day shoot. The batteries rest easily inside the tray. They slide in and out of the base without much effort, but they are secure when they snap into place. I really like you can use the battery grip with one or two batteries. The battery tray locks into the base of the grip using a small turning lock on the side of the grip. It comes out of the grip in the same way that it locks into place. Something I wanted to touch on is theCamera Battery Chamber Cover Holder. This feature shows how much thought thatVello put into designing this grip. I love this feature because I can use the grip for as long as I want without ever worrying about losing that precious battery door. CONCLUSIONS I truly feel thateveryCanon 5D Mark IV owner should have this accessory. When I use it I don’t feel like it’s an attachment; it feels like it’s part of the camera. You couldn’t ask for a better product when it comes to a third-party accessory. The Battery Grip is an invaluable tool for production and it really increases productivity. I love not having to stop in the middle of a production just to change a battery. It’s really improved my longer shoots and added functionality to my camera.
