ZEISS 524203-9901-000 overview

  • 1Description

The black 2017 edition of ZEISS Optics' 8x42 Terra ED Binocular features a redesigned ergonomic chassis that makes holding it more comfortable, especially during long glassing sessions. Optically, it retains the exceptional elements that are the hallmarks of the Terra ED, including compact Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms, SCHOTT extra-low dispersion (ED) glass, and proprietary multi-coatings. These complementary technologies and elements work together to produce an immersive observational experience that presents clear and bright views, with accurate color representation and virtually zero distortion across the entire field of view. Adding to the binocular's usability is a short 5.25-foot close-focus distance that gives it the ability to resolve feathers or leaves in fine detail.

The comfortable ergonomic chassis is made of a fiberglass-reinforced polycarbonate to help reduce weight, without sacrificing strength while adding impact and temperature resistance. Being resistant to temperature changes not only ensures that the housing will remain a constant temperature, even in cold and wet conditions, but will not experience the expansion and contraction common in metal chassis that can cause the optical elements to move out of alignment over time and hinder the binocular's ability to achieve sharp focus. The chassis is covered in a black rubber armoring that helps to protect it from drops and impacts and provides a slip-resistant grip.

Optical Performance
  • 8x magnification
  • 42mm objective lenses
  • Roof prism optical path
  • The compact Schmidt-Pechan prism design corrects the view while allowing for thinner optical tubes versus the more common Abbe-Koenig design
  • SCHOTT ED glass elements reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations to produce views with true color rendition without halos, diffraction, or distortion across the entire field of view
  • ZEISS proprietary hydrophobic multi-coated optics shed dust, dirt, and oils while improving light transmission, color rendition, sharpness, and contrast
  • Short 5.25-foot close-focus distance
  • 375' field of view at 1000 yards
  • Long 18mm eye relief
  • Comfortable 5.25mm exit pupil
Use and Handling
  • Closed-bridge configuration

    ZEISS 524203-9901-000 reviews

8x42 Terra ED Binocular, 2017 Edition (Black) is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 12.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from a big disappointment I have been birding for more than 60 years. During that time I have owned a number of different binoculars from low to high end, including Zeiss. Maybe I just got a bad example (which in itself shows poor quality control), but these showed unacceptable color fringing around the edges and a lot of flare. I returned them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I prefer over monarchs This is my third pair, and now everyone in the family has one. Before ordering pair #3, I ordered several pairs of monarchs, since they are less expensive, have great reviews, and were recommended as superior by my birding mentor. I thought that variety in the family pool of binoculars would be a good thing. But try as I did to like the Monarchs better, I found the buttery smooth focussing on the Zeiss to be effortless (Monarch's was stiff) and the optics identical, if not superior. So the Monarchs got returned, and we are all happily using Zeiss Terras.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from just superbly thought out While people enjoyed the great price point for what just a matter of several years ago would have been $1000 features (ED glass, nitrogen filling), in the prior edition of these binoculars there were quite a few complaints about the case and caps. In the 2017 edition, Zeiss adjusted the accessories to address that. The soft rubber caps, the neck strap, and the belt-attachable case are all very well thought-out for both convenience and protection. Before the first use, you will need to be very patient threading the caps and the straps until you figure out how they were meant to go. After that is done right, there is zero hassle or chance of losing the protective caps. The case is very close fitting. You won't get anything else in there, and even the neckstrap adds just enough bulk that you have to be judicious about placing it before closing the zippers. I have the 8x40s. The 40s are just light enough and the 8x is just low power enough that I can comfortably hand hold for 20 minutes at a time. Other users with a lot of experience and strength might be able to extend that. Users with less experience and strength may need to brace. The eye relief is excellent for users with glasses. The screw-out eyecups adjust the eye relief down for users with contacts or no need for a correction.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Binoculars great, lens caps and strap worthless I bought the 2016 edition of the Zeiss 8x42 Terra Ed binoculars and the binoculars themselves are stellar in every way. The neck strap was cheap junk and I had to buy one of higher quality. The eyepiece lens caps were great, but the front lens covers were one of the worst designs I'd ever seen. They were supposed to go on the inside instead of covering from the outside like the eyepiece covers. The front covers would only stay in place until you touched the binoculars, tilted them, or the wind blew, then they fell out. I bought some eight dollar front lens covers and they work perfectly. I sure hope they fixed this oversight with the 2017 models. Even with these headaches, I love these binoculars. They are easy to focus, good in low light, render colors accurately, and crisp.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zeiss, do you need to say more. All my life I have wanted a very good pair of binoculars. I have had those costing $100 and I was not satisfied. These are rated above much more expensive binoculars by Audubon; Audubon does their ratings using blind comparison among experienced users. The Audubon rating and the quote, "You can't go wrong with Zeiss." convinced me to buy these. I recommend them to you without reservation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very fast to focus I bought these binoculars for birding as my previous pair were very slow to focus. I really like how fast these focus. The image is very bright and sharp too. They come with a good, hard case.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great binoculars I bought these primarily for bird watching, to use in conjunction with a spotting scope, as well as for general use. These were an excellent choice for me - bright, crisp views, with intuitive focusing and adjustments. The close focus option is a nice bonus. Lightweight and comfortable. I can use then with or without my glasses, and the eyecups adjust nicely. The 2017 model comes with a decent padded neck strap. The lens covers work well but you can't attach them and the neck strap to the side tabs on the binoculars at the same time, which seems like an oversight. I ended up attaching each lens cover to one side of the neck strap to anchor them down. The binoculars also come with a thin hard case, but it's supposed to be attached to your belt which wouldn't work for me. I got the Zeiss HD42 storage bag separately - a perfect fit.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent optics and handling I used these for a 3 hour bird walk on a very hot, humid day. They were easy to hold. My glasses were fogging, but the binoculars stayed clear and dry. The optics were excellent. The included shoulder strap was very comfortable to use over the course of 3 hours.
